Good morning all. What's on my miniature mind is removing, as best as possible, oil stains on a smooth concrete floor where our T's have unceremoniously marked their territory. There have been posts in the past but I can't seem to recall the magic words to find them in the archives. So if you have any of the links or have some suggestions of your...

Years ago, I had gotten a complete new harness from good old J.C. Whitney. Color coding then matched exactly to the wires when stripping back the old harness, which was highly likely 'original' with Ford printing, A couple of years ago, I trailered the TT to a client's body shop for some body work. I’m getting closer to bringing home my ‘21 T project. I got a wheel on it and drug it out of the hole and tall grass it has been sitting in. I noticed a strange little contraption bolted to the tie rod. What the heck is it? Some sort of anti chatter or vibration device?
Last post
Wheel shimmy is caused by loose parts in the steering mechanism. A quick fix is to place that device to keep it from shaking. It does not fix the underlying problem. The shimmy occurs when you go over a bump and it starts to shake. If that happens at certain speeds it causes harmonious vibrations and continues to shake. Usually it will shake until...

:( My yellow 26 touring has not been run in over a year. It is 12 volt. has a coil and distributor. starter is 6 volts so it spins fast. I have tried to crank it a few times over the past months with no luck. I tried it yesterday and didn't get any pops bangs or burps. But I did notice My intake manifold was slightly cooler than the other engine...
Last post
You can tell if a model T engine is getting fuel by checking the carb and manifold temperature to see if they get cooler after being cranked a number of times. not a cold weather test. But will help eliminate fuel as a problem So You can move on to check other areas. In My case dirty distributor points.

So Im replacing the manifold gaskets from the 3 in 1 to the 12 piece o ring type. But not so fast....the #1 port on the manifld is tweeked about 1/8 or so. Likely the reason the gasket let go. So Iv ordered a new manifold from Eklers but was wondering if anyone has ever salvaged a bent manifold. This is a Ford script original to the car as far as...
Last post
In my experience, a bent manifold can be made to have all four holes in alignment, but the spacing between the holes is usually off. Generally the center two holes will be spaced out too far, perhaps by as much as 1/16 , which is really just as bad as having the holes out of line up and down.

Tips on Installing a Modern Cam Seal

First post
I ruined a modern cam/timing cover seal by trying to expand it by putting it between two pieces of wood in a vice.
Any other tips or tricks on making one of these a bit bigger so it fits more snug?
It even occurred to me to just leave it like it is and glue it in with RTV around the perimeter but I don't think it'll stay put.
Last post
Be careful buying cheap RTV.
I only use Permatex Ultra Black RTV. Let it cure over night and you won't need to worry or install retainer screws if you have removed all the oil from the mating surface!
Most guys here also use it to retain a modern seal on the outside of the cover on the crankshaft. Guarantees a leak free chankshaft seal

Yes, I painstakingly centered the ring, and the ring is round. I think it's working okay based on a good coil doing what it's supposed to. The every other location was what seemed odd, but I think we got it figured out based on the A/C sparks. I think things make sense now. Those are good ideas, though. Thanks; I'll check them again next time.

We do make them, but only in the original style to take the original style coils (which we also make). This is because when we got started, there was already a fellow making boxes for the later coils, so that market was covered.

What Keeps the Lock Nut In Place?

Here's a simple question, but one that has me scratching my head.
Regarding the lock nut that goes on the end of the camshaft...the one that keeps all the timer guts in place...what keeps it in place if there's no cotter pin? It seems like the rotation of the cam would loosen it over time.

Makes perfect sense.

1911 Touring...Gas tank needs to come out for cleaning or replacement.
There are screw heads not easily seen in this picture all over the seat area.
I'm hoping that I can remove some of them and this will make room for the tank to come straight out.
If this is possible, please let me know which screws need to come out.
Thx.

What is the prefered type of manifold gasket material. Copper rings or 2 piece asbestos. Currently using asbestos but had one start leaking last week.

Others may have a different opinion, but I find these copper gland gaskets can be re-used, probably several times if that were necessary, which makes them cheaper in the long run. Years ago, glands of this type made of aluminum (I think with an asbestos core) were available, and were much softer. They could only be used once.

Hello,
i have aluminium pistons which didn't have oil holes drilled for the wrist pin in my 26 Roadster.
Can someone please post a picture with the aluminium piston with the oil holes drilled?
I am interested in the location of the hole, the number of holes and the diameter.
My intention is to drill the holes for the oil.
Piston.jpg
Thanks...
Last post
It’s actually more important to have the pistons honed to fit the pin. Most T piston pins are way too tight and/or the bores are out of alignment. Correcting that is more important than drilling extra oil holes. If you do drill holes, you will need to somehow de-burr the insides of the holes.

I have always understood how a differential works and that the wheel with the least traction will spin, but that is not my question. If the engine is out you can sure see which side the hole is on in the bell, if it is on top it would be a simple job to turn the retainer. If it is on the bottom then the whole T tube would have to be turned 180 degrees for things to line up. With it on the bottom, the hole in the bell, things might not line up because of the angle of the T-tube....

I've been working on a junk 1918 engine for close to 18 months now. When I say junk, I mean JUNK as the serial number had been roughly chiseled off years ago. To make a long story short, everything needed replacement in addition to rebuilding.
I've had the flywheel on and off quite a few times in order...

May I offer that my own stupidity no longer amazes or surprises me.

If I want to try the 26-27 steering gears and pinion in my 1923 touring I need to use the 26-27 shaft too, is that right? If you've made this change, what do you think of the results? Was it worth doing?

I have posted this a few times in the past. I have changed over to the 5to1 gears twice, once on the TT that Dallas has now, and on the beater' '25 coupe that we have now. Both times with used gears and steering shaft, It all fit perfectly with no problem, most likely because everything was a bit used. I did use drill rod for the pins that was a...

Need a little troubleshooting help please.
Accelerating in low and release of the clutch pedal: High gear shift is real sloppy now. Almost can't get into the gear.
What is the fix for this?
Thanks
Last post
George, 1.5 of free travel in the pedal before it engages on the ramp, indicates that the pedal and/or ramp in the hogshead are well worn. Unfortunately, the cure requires removing the hogshead to replace the pedal ramp, and removing the pedal from the pedal shaft to rebuild the pedal ramp. If you can pull the pedal back with your hand, it may...

Another question. Front wheel has a 1/2 inch wobble in roughly 18 inches around the circumference. Other thread have said to remove tire, loosen all the bolts to the hub, encourage the wheel flat on a flat surface, and re-tighten. Anyone have a method that has worked for them?
John
Last post
The method above is for wood felloe, non-demountable wheels. Hub bolts should be tight. All you are doing is slightly changing the position of the felloe on the rim.
As far as the hub is concerned: if you believe the hub is causing wobble, you can remove the bolts and rotate the hub so it is in a different position and then reinstall the bolts...

Last post
The length of the drag link also needed to change (about a quarter of an inch) when that tie rod changed. But it looks like you already have the later drag link, so changing to the later tie rod might improve things anyway. Of course, I also prefer working towards cars being more era correct. But, that is me.

how tight should we tighten the four bolts that attach the rim to the wheel?
Last post
Unless the felloe and/or the rim have been worn where they engage, the lugs should never fit up to the felloe. I tighten each nut in turn, a little at a time, adjusting the runout in the rim as I go. They need to be tight, but not overdone. I check them after use to make sure they are set. After that, treat them as you would your modern car.

Last post
If you take a magnet and put it on the top of a removed transmission inspection plate and then put a small nail on the other side I think you will find that the magnets field is dissipated through the cover and will not attract the nail. I have not had any luck using a magnet on the outside.

Over the weekend I was replacing an inner tube in a flat tire. I inflated the replacement 30x3-1/2 tube to make sure that all was well. Then I noticed the markings on the inner tube. This is the marking that is on one side:

This was on the other side of the inner tube:

It is definitely 30x3 tube....

In the store of things I know that are regularly proved wrong, I've been operating on the commonly held belief that tubes can be used successfully in either 30x3-1/2 or 30x3 tires. That said, I have both sizes in my road kit. Others better informed will set us straight, I'm sure ! :D

Anyone ever seen a Model T coil that was worth $350.00? A model T friend just alerted me to this Macs catalog page. Unless it's a spoof or a big blunder, they are trying to sell Model T coils for that price! What's the story?
Last post
If you read the add it’s called a coil kit consisting of 4 coils. That’s not a bad price for 4 coils with KW points.
Macs uses the word kit in several grouping of T parts if you go through their catalog.

I have gotten a great deal of good advice on doing a job I have never done - repairing the block valve seats before putting in new valves. From the picture posted it seems to me the block is the problem with my very low cylinder compression despite just carefully fitting new piston rings. When I do 300 lap strokes, I feel resistance, grinding of...
Last post
Best results from valve grind with paste is for an engine with very good seats. If the old engine has the valve heads sunk flush with the block, then too far gone to do any paste grinding.
This '23 is candidate for fitting new valves and grinding faces of valves to fit the somewhat worn but usable valve seats. Could be satisfactory runner....

Depending on the look of the entire car, some people like a very shiny brass / bronze carburetor and others prefer the dark brown that comes from time and use. So when carburetors are polished, what is generally used to keep them shiny ... spray lacquer?
Last post
Most likely the brass carbs were clean and in their original unpolished condition when installed at the factory. Sort of like brass fittings as you find them in bins at the hardware store. Clean but “shined” up. As time went on they turned like any other brass fitting being used.
