Has anyone seen two legs on the bottom of their seat springs?
Last post
Those are for holding the springs into place. They go into corresponding holes in the seat frame.
Thanks Ken. My seat platform doesn’t have holes so I just took the legs off. I suspected that but without clear evidence I chose not to drill my restored seat platform. Next time I’ll do it right.

Some years ago I bought a 1914 Touring that had been restored in the 1960s and has had a number of owners since. It is tired in some respects and needs some TLC to be back in its prime. More on that in another thread.

I am helping a local friend straighten out a few mechanical problems with his newly-acquired 1919 Centerdoor. One area is the Kingston carburetor and its adjusting needle and adjusting rod. It's a brass bodied L-4, which should be an L-2 for this year, according to my research. We're staying with the L-4, however. It has the later '26-27 swivel...

So I had posted here yesterday that I repacked my front and inner wheel bearings on my 26 T. For the Inner bearings I did not remove them. Justin, just snug was apparently too snug if you tightened things. It is better to err on the not snug side, than to have the wheel binding, even a little bit. When you grip the wheel top and bottom, and wriggle it, you should feel just a smidgeon of play. It is hardly noticeable to the eye, but it can be felt.If it is still there when you have...

I am considering adding a starter to my unrestored 1915 Touring car sometime in the future. Removing and reinstalling my 1915 engine didn't require any changes to the brackets or the firewall. You simply remove the four front body bolts, loosen the rear two, and set the front of the body up on 2 x 4 blocks.
I never seriously considered installing an electric starter, but my deteriorating physical condition hints that I should at least...

To further Mark's comments, the hood would almost certainly have been black, like the rest of the chassis, leaving blue only on the body and turtledeck. This black hood, color body style was established among many car makers in the 1915 era for all body styles.
Ford adopted all black for open cars in 1915, so restricting the blue for closed car...

The larger Ace Hardware stores have a decent selection of hinges.
And no they aren’t exact reproductions but you might find some that are pretty close and alter or rebend them to look like the deck hinges.
There are several T parts that aren’t being reproduced and the deck hinges are not either.

Those 26-7 bolts superseded an earlier type with a slotted head, meaning a screwdriver was used to tension them. These later ones are far more satisfactory. At least, that's what I have found on our Canadian sourced cars.

The only way to be sure which coil is going to which cylinder is to check the actual wire at the coil and again at the timer, you may have to peel back the loom a little to see the color of the wire due to dirt and fading. Regardless of what the wiring diagrams show, there is no telling what previous owners may have done over the years.

I have a 1921 touring that I have been driving for 6 years with no trouble.> As part of my routine service in the spring on checking the rear end oil I found about 2-3 cups of oil coming out of the fill hole. I checked it again today(after about 250 miles) and found about 1 cup coming out. I realize that the oil is leaking past the 4th main into...

Steve that’s a great point often overlooked. I’m not saying I’ve done this but a similar situation was happening on a friends T. His temporary solution was to loosen the rear axle to drop the driveshaft/tube out to inspect. He found 4th main was still decent, he used his shop light to look inside the tail shaft, after spraying brake cleaner in it...

My car came with aux brakes installed they are hetzel bros and look similar to the old rocky mountains.
They are installed on large drums, but at some point someone gutted the parking/ emergency brake out of this car. I'm hoping to reinstall the missing brake hardware and get a functional emergency brake again....

Thanks John,
Now that I have a lathe with a large enough spindle hole I do stretch axles when they are out. I'm hoping that will not be needed as I'm just
adding the brakes back in when I install a set of wheels I re-spoked.

Just throwing this out there because I think it's interesting.
Serial number is just after July 31, 1917 so it may fall under the 1918 model year.
Driver's door (of course).
Note ribbed pedals - were these utilized longer in Canada?
Round lights (windows) in top rear curtain - typical of Canadian Ts.
Unlike U.S. 1917s, two additional bolts...

Easy to remember, the ring gap goes with in line with the wrist pin then the next 180 with the pin and again another 180 for the oil, never have the gaps on the thrust sides of pistons.

Here is a question for the experts.
Those looking for an air filter, could the hot air tubs be filled loosely with a course gauze material, lightly oiled be used as a simple but effective air filter for dusty conditions?

With modern fuels, I don't use a hot air pipe, but this filter from Lang's Works well and the filter part is washable and can be replaced. Some heat may be transferred from the hogs head, but probably not enough to make any difference.

3 to 1 Ring Gear Shim Experience Question

Hello,
I am in the process of rebuilding my rear differential which I decided to move to a 3to1 gear ratio. I placed one half of the differential case, plus two thick washers and 1 modern bearing on the drivers side and turned it to see how it did without ring gear shims. It is rubbing. Not by much... but it is still rubbing.
I need to buy ring...
Last post
As advised, shims should not be used between the ring gear and the carrier. It is better to use a shim behind one of the side thrust plates to shift the diff centre within the housing.
As advised, a 3:1 gearset will severely effect the braking and accelerating ability of all but the lightest of vehicles. A compromise option is the 39 tooth ring...

Hello All.
I just got my first Model T (1919), and it is equipped with these weird Hammond shock absorbers. The front ones consist of springs that connect to the oil pan, and the back ones aren't connected. I have the springs, but they connect to a weird hook and I only have one of them. The car drives fine, but if I go over any substantial bump...

The better variety of these shock absorbers has an arm on BOTH sides of the spring. The load on that single arm variety is not applied evenly, and they will wear accordingly. They were a popular accessory offered by Duncan and Fraser in Adelaide here in South Australia, so I rebuilt the ones on my roadster, with bronze bushes and oilers. They are...

I need help installing a mirror on my coupe. How do I remove the hinge pin on the door? I tapped on the pin but It didn't move. I did not hit it very hard. I would appreciate suggestions on how to proceed.
Attached are photos of the mirror and the door hinge.

I am looking for a chart or something that lists proper thread pictures and sizes for the Model T. I have numerous bolts and nuts I would like to use a tap and die set on but do not have a gauge and could not find what I was hoping for on the website. Specifically I am looking for the size of the U joint 4th Main on the back of the transmission. A...

This is my first post with this new forum format. I was in the old forum before it was updated years ago. I have and rebuilt 1 Model T. My great grandfather bought it new in 1922. The block date is 2/22/22. It is a touring cut off as it was used on a family farm to move stuff around until 1942 or so when the war started. I went through it in 2011...

So I’ve perused the catalog and the only definitive Fun Projects part I’ve found is the polymer plastic coil box rebuild kit and possibly a voltage regulator and brass magneto post.
Catalog says all are in stock.
The brake light kit is not mentioned.
The parts are not identified as to who originally produced them, but the mag post photo image...

When you have two nearly identical Yale lock tool boxes for your Model T and no key it is time to man up and do something about the key shortage. Relying on minimal knowledge gained some 50 years ago in a mail order locksmith course taken during a cold winter, I have achieved success and now have working keys for my tool boxes. One has been made...

I hope your car runs OK now that I see you are down to three coils. Hopefully that key works great now that the coil is kaput.

Canadian 1925 to 1927 Tire Change Rim Tool

The Canadian 1925 to 1927 Model Ts had a Rim Tire Change Tool that kind of looked like a varmit trap with big springs and short pegs that fit those holes near the rim break.
A friend has an early Dodge with the same rims.
Would anyone have one they do not need or some photos of that tool?
I have lost my photos!

That photo does look like the one I used to have, but can no longer find.

I’m driving my T more these days and what I continue
to encounter when I pull the plugs after a long
tour: no’s 3 and 4, clean. No. 2, fouled. No. 1
really fouled.
I am running a Stipe cam and a Prus high compression
head. I have tested the intake manifold for any signs
of a vacuum leak. No signs of a leak. Engine runs
strong.
Any ideas guys....

On 12-18-22, first episode of 1923 will air. There are lots of old cars, including many Model T's. I was hired by Paramount as an old car consultant . I even have a couple of bit parts, so I might be seen, if I don't wind up on the cutting room floor.

Whoa Jeff !!.. It’s not a ‘shame’ but a financial blessing that ‘1923’ is moving to the central Texas (+ Galveston) area. This way I’ll have 3-4 Model Ts in front of the camera. The picture car coordinator even invited me to possibly be a driver. 8-)

If anything, the comparisons show there is little difference, except where the dash to ---- is measured. Then the installation of the in-cowl gas tank and subsequent longer cowl reduce those measurements. These should have no real effect on the room for the driver.

Didnt 25 roadster ONLY have a narrow tool tray behind the fuel tank?
The door hinges are 25.
Carb mixture/choke linkage could be correct for an early 25.
Later used the 26 style combination choke & mixture set up.

Attaching brass script to Radiator

I have decided to add a little bling to my car and attach a brass Ford script and a small 1914 script to my radiator. There are two recommended ways of attaching the script. They say you can use brass wires to hold the script to the radiator or you can silver solder the brass script to bolts and run the bolts through the radiator. I was wondering...
Last post
I went with Allan's method. Drilled two small holes thru the brass script, put the threaded rod thru with the cap nuts. Only difference is I added a washer under the cap nuts on the inside of the radiator to protect the fins. It's been 20 years and no problems.

I recently bought a 23 roadster without a top, now i am finding out there are several type irons and bows for the 23. How can i determine the correct ones for this car. Is the front one wood, Please any info or pictures would sure help me out. Thanks Sam Mendenhall
Last post
23-25 are the same. 23 is the first year for the one man top. (US production)
The windshield/stands are slanted back. The top clamps to the top of these W/S stands.
26-7 irons have a curve to the body attaching pivot point.
All 3 bows are wood between the formed sheet metal side bows.
Your top will look like the 25 barn find

Speedster Steering Issue

First post
Working on a friend's speedster, 4 dropped axle, lowered spindles, reversed spindle arms (for clearance), new pitman arm, all spindle bolts, tie rod bolts & front bearings all snug - problem is it's quite squirrely/darty at anything where over 20 mph. Will verify drag link length but this has me scratching my head ! 30 tires with 5-1 upper gears.
Last post
I realize that pitman arms changed during production BUT I have several NOS arms to compare to and it was the same length as Snyder's new one at some time in it's past - he relayed to me that there wasn't any clearance with the dropped axle, lowered spindles & reversed arms.

external braking when wet

I live in mountains of North Carolina, worry about losing braking from broken drive train. I own a set of AC brakes, have not installed them yet. Some commentators have mentioned that external drum brakes don't work when wet. Our area enjoys 70+ inches of rain a year so wet breaks are a potential worry. What is the consensus on external drum...
Last post
External braking will be substantially reduced when water, grease, mud, bugs, etc get on the linings. About all you can do is keep the brakes as clean and as dry as conditions will allow. Lightly dragging wet brakes for a few hundred feet before going down a steep grade can help dry them out. It's important to keep all brakes in top condition and...

Well, I changed-out my hi-flow aluminum intake manifold for the correct dog-leg intake ...and now my 'G' throttle linkage hits the manifold. :o I realize the 'G' is not a 5-ball, but has anyone else used a 'G' on an early manifold? -and if so, what did you do?? TIA!
IMG_0711.JPEG
Last post
Mark's extension will have the carb set waay further back than needed for the throttle arm to clear the manifold. The much bigger internal bore is also unwanted in this application. The suggested thick alloy plate and a gasket each side of it is all that is needed, plus a couple of longer bolts!

Question - is the thing on the left of a left hand drive Model T, a parking brake or emergency brake?
Last post
It really distills down to this. It is a parking brake. To use it in an emergency dis-engages much better braking systems provided by the engine and the transmission.

When timing my more modern cars (1960's Mopars) if you advance the distributer you get more power. Then depending on your octane level I would retard it so it didn't ping.
With the Model T and going up a hill (needing more power) you retard the ignition (timer). Why is is opposite? I know A lot of T owners leave their spark lever alone and don't...

As I stated earlier, and I don’t know where I learned about it, but I’ve used the spark retard shift method for a long time. It’s the best system I’ve found.
