I have read that prior to the release of the Model A, Edsel Ford commissioned a handful of 6 cylinder model T's. I have a couple of photos of one and would like to know more of the history of them.

Single Barrel Bridgeport Tire Pumps

I recently purchased a single barrel Bridgeport tire pump. I thought it was the correct one for the 1915 era Model T. Now I'm not sure. I've noticed it does NOT have the Ford script on the bottom. Does anyone know what year(s) the single-barrel Bridgeport pump was supplied with new Model T Fords? Does it have to have the Ford script on the bottom,...

Yes. It takes three 45 gram cartridges to fill a 30 x 3.5 inch tire to 60 psi. The cartridges get really cold when they discharge, so you need to wear gloves or wrap the cartridge with a towel when you discharge it to keep from freezing your hands.
I stopped carrying tire pumps on my bicycles, now I carry 16 gram cartridges and an inflator. A...

Just thought I would try out the new forum. We are still looking for a line shaft driven vertical milling machine. Nice work on the museum machine shop. You may already be familiar with the American Precision Museum in VT. I visited last summer (they are closed over the winter months) and they mentioned an upper floor containing stored machine tools not currently on display. As Allan mentioned the Keyserts work very well. They use standard tap sizes for the outer thread & have 2 thicknesses for the insert. The thin wall 7/16 insert has a 9/16 outer thread so the 1/2 hole could be drilled out to make it work. The key in using these is to follow the instructions carefully, once installed they will not come loose.

Just seen an ad in the new AACA mag. Coker tire now has 440/450 R21 tires for sale. I’ll be needing tires soon, but just doesn’t seem right to have radials on the old truck.
The brand is American Classic, not listed on their site yet.
Last post
Kerry, why would radials need zero camber? I would think any tire/axle design would need camber to counter act the inner and outer diameter of the turning radius. What difference would radial tires make? Just curious. Dave

I have non-demountable bands in my transmission and have started installing wood bands. I checked the steel bands on an old drum and managed to pound them fairly round. I've only drilled the holes in the wood so far, but noticed that the ends of the metal bands are slightly bent inwards at the lugs, probably from years of being tugged by the pedal...
Last post
Yes you could use heat on that Ford tough steel. But surprised the lugs are bent!
Most times a little gap of the riveted steel band to those lugs is unlikely to cause much issue. Just do try to get the new wood linings to protrude out the end of the metal band.

Gear Oil Gasket Maker vs Cold Temps

First post
I recently sealed up my differential with Permatex Gear Oil Gasket Maker. I did a little experiment at the same time, applying some between two pieces of aluminum sheet metal and clamping them together. The sealant is supposed to cure in 24 hours but the fine print says it may take longer under cold and dry conditions.
I don't leave the heat on...
Last post
According to the pkg, this sealant is designed to be used in a gear oil situation. Gear oil tends to break down RTV and the gear oil is to be used where gear oil is present.
This document tells it all. With RTV I had a pretty good seal with slight leakage. With Gear Oil Gasket Maker I have had zero leakage.

Dan, you are correct about the fit of the cups. i could not edit the first post and corrected the advice in the second. Because the wire wheel hubs are thin where the outer cup goes, they are often stressed so that the outer cup is just a slide in fit. They need to be carefully inspected and a trial fit done to really be safe.

I'm desperately trying to save the fan pulley/hub for my 1918 engine. The fan blades are junk, but the aluminum pulley is in decent, usable shape. Unfortunately, all four rusty steel screws are frozen solid in the aluminum. So far, I've heated the screw heads with a propane torch (to keep temperatures down), applied a good penetrating oil twice....

By the way, stay away from those spiral (un)easy outs. :) All they are good for is removing bolts that have been broken off from side pressure, not ones that have twisted off. All they do is lock the bolt in tighter as you try to remove it, or twist off making it pretty much impossible to drill it out. The square type easy outs are much better....

Coatings are a large part of my business, with a heavy emphasis on restoration/

Several suggestions above regarding penetrating oils are good for durability and

This wonderful old home movie, updated to a more modern format, was just posted on the AACA website. There aren't many Ts. The games are fun, but the one of driving over logs while balancing a tray of drinks looks to be hard on the cars. There are two fires - one simulated, the other clearly not. These were just 30-year-old used cars then;...

Why would someone ground the generator on a running engine ?
Last post
Yep,
A generator must have a load of some sort on it, or it will self destruct by overheating itself. Ordinarily, the battery is its load. If the cut out fails to energize and close the circuit upon start-up, the generator will burn itself up. Same for if you take the battery out of the system, unless you do as shown in the photo. Brent, yes they are a simple lathe turned item. The only two critical measurements are the .999 shaft diameter, and the 1.375 diameter of the collar. So, if my calculations are anywhere near correct, using this wrench, a person would need to push with just over 45 lb. of pressure on the end of the wrench, to get 70 lb/ft of torque on the axle nut. Seems logical. But, if a person really leaned on the wrench, with his body weight, you could get well over 100 lb/ft torque. I'm still confused. I...

Why spark plugs fail?

This morning I was asked this question: What would cause a plug to NOT fire under compression?
I know one reason, but there are others. What do you think?
Last post
Re Mark, since both electrodes on the old brass-top Champions are made of round wire, would the sharp edge be only where the base (grounded) electrode is sheared off ? It's easy to note the wear (erosion) on spark plug electrodes, would it help to dress the edge of the ground electrodes as they become dubbed with use ?
That is what I have read in...

First of all I am kind of a purist. I have a 16 T with a 24 engine so I don't have to crank it. But, I have the 16 engine in the garage and everything is undoable to bring it as close to a true 16 as possible. Having said that I guess I have one foot in both camps.
I am wondering if any of you have installed The Ideal Timer ? I'm sure you know...

I don't have an I-Timer , but I do have an E-Timer - which in appearance, and in terms of wiring and installation, is the same. The difference is it works on battery only - which suits me because I don't have a magneto.
What I like is that everything looks totally original; the timer built into the housing of a roller timer. No wiring changes were...

1915-16 radiators

I have a 1915? radiator on my 1913. Yes, I know it's wrong, but it holds water and cools very well. Here is my question, and I don't want any guesses! The radiator on my car had the headlight wire tube soldered to the lower tank. It is simply a radiator tube bent into a sight V and soldered in three places to the bottom tank. A good friend of mine...

Larry, on our Canadian sourced cars I have never seen a headlight wire tube anywhere else but soldered to the steel mounting bar in the core. FWIW.

I decided that adding pepper to the radiator every few trips wasn’t going to be a good answer to the multi-leak problem. Originally I had ordered a new one from one of the vendors but it was 6 weeks out. I then found one of the last radiator repair shops in Northern CA is in Santa Rosa and cancelled my order. I made quick friends with the owner...

Someone got carried away with a few tins of Bar's leaks.
A good product, made my old man a very wealthy over the years by blocking the radiator, often if left in too long could set hard in the tubes making it beyond repair. The soluble oil in the Bar's leaks makes it look like grease.

I am measuring 1” toe out, not real scientific yet, but I can’t be too far off. I have no idea how that could have been intentional. The car was partially restored in the 80’s by my father, then sat in one warehouse or the other for 30 years.
The tie rod end, passenger side, feels to be flush with the tie rod, so maybe there is enough thread to...

Same as any other T, just after top dead center. You are setting for the spark to happen just after to prevent kick back. After that setting to where it runs best.

The generator is original 6 volt on a 26 engine and when You start up and bring it to a fast idle the amp meter shows no charge with or without load/lights on. Manuely holding the cutout closed does not speed up the process. after a few minutes it usually starts charging slowing coming up to about 9-10 amps charge with or without load. It seem's...
Last post
I think you will find that to be normal. When the car sets for a month or two without being driven the residual magnetism tends to diminish. If you run it for a minute or two it usually will show a charge. It has to charge for a few seconds to build up the magnetism after which it will run at the charge it was originally set.

Hello, new guy here, 1st post
For many years I've been contemplating rerunning my father's 1925 drive from downtown Los Angeles to June Lake, CA., @ 350 miles. He was 22 years old and had a Model T with a Ruckstell axel, Frontenac head and a blacksmith lowered front axle. He painted the T green with a bicycle hand pump on a home made mason jar...

Cliffy -- as others have said, a 350-mile trip in a Model T is no big deal. (Not for the car, anyway.) Lots of us drove our T's many hundreds of miles to the Centennial in 2008. I recommend that you look for a Roadster Pickup. To me, that is the most versatile body style. It is lightweight, has plenty of room for one or two people, and it will...

I saw this on Ebay last week and just had to have it. It is a 1925 Rand McNally road map of Missouri. It folds to standard road map size, but the main map insert unfolds to 28.5 x 34.5 inches.
The road from St. Louis, MO to Hillsboro, MO (now highway 21) is just listed as Trail #3 , I wonder if it was still a dirt road back then? :)

I hadn't looked at the low speed pedal and shaft on the 18 here. I didn't see the roll pin in there. One day I noticed it worked loose and wanted to fall out. I wired it in place until I could get a solid pin and set it. Duh, Duane. That's why the pedal was a bit loose on the shaft.

Dick, you are correct. I noticed the same thing. The sagging will definitely contribute to the holes' not lining up, and in addition may indicate cracking either under way or about to start. A careful examination and possible repair is in order before getting out on the road, in my opinion.
