Anyone put one of these on lately? I’ve got an email out to Mike at Classtique but his printed out directions are pretty basic as far as pictures/illustrations. Trying to figure out where to locate the back straps and seems like it would be easier to mock the back window up first, centered, and determine where the fasteners go in the tack rail,...

Are Canadian demountable rims interchangeable with other wheels?

Picked up four loose wooden spoke wheels and four demountable 21 split rims, two of which are the flat strap and window latch type assembly and two are Canadian split rings and rod insert type locking assembly.

I was being a little cheeky with the big hammer comments. I just wanted to make sure before i dismounted the tire, tube and flap again and mess with the rim that I would eventually get there. I see one of the guys making the Lincoln Highway trip is Mike Bender. Over the years he has been very kind to me. One memorable example was in 2018 when I was contemplating my first interstate trip by Model T. I have learned a bit, but in no way am I a real mechanic. I was apprehensive about driving alone across several states in my 1915 runabout....

I acquired a Torpedo last fall with Buffalo wheels. I would like to dismount the wheels to touch up chips on the paint. I did an hour search on the forum before making this plea for help. I understand the caps are left and right side specific as they say so. Does the wrench activate the cap release? These notched tabs already look in or released....
Last post
Many times the original hex cap locking mechanisms will get hung up and not return after being depressed. The locking tab does not protrude much, but spring pressure should force the ratchet pawl to make contact at the top of the groove. Try depressing your ratchet tab even further, if it stays down, you have work to do once you get the cap off....

The Ford Model T has an ignition system that creates much discussion.
As early as 1901 German automobiles were using a compact magneto for their automobiles. Compact magnetos were known in use of telephones.
So why did Ford insist on a large alternator to power his coils. Why not a magneto?
As early as 1915 Ford claimed a patent for a...

My question is this, would the marks as shown on the spindle require that it be replaced?
I have obtained another hub and and replaced all cups and bearings.

Last post
The marks are centre punch dimples. Each mark would have raised metal around it when first made. The idea is to make the inner bearing a firmer fit on the spindle.
By now, the raised edges will have been worked back down and the bearing is likely to be loose again. You could re-punch the marks and use Loktite bearing mount but the best way is to...

The NH is one of the most trouble free carbs made for a T. there are other makes with a few more adjustments for different speeds and throttle openings, but they also have more problems. You got a bargain.

How are the reflectors mounted in the bucket on a 26 Coupe? I tried prying around the edge, hoping to release them, but I was hesitant to apply too much force.
Last post
The reflector cutouts have to be placed at the detents of the headlamp bucket.
Using a tool to rotate the reflector helps to align the cutouts with the detents. There are small holes in the reflector edge, so a small pick or hooked tool can fit in the hole for rotating the reflector. Then the reflector can be pulled away and lifted off the bulb...

We did many fun family trips with that camper- and at the time (I was 9) it was light enough that I could unhook it and set it up myself- it weighed about 400 lbs and set up in 15 seconds. I'll assume you're working with just the right half, with the differential/axles and ring/pinion set in and the driveshaft bolted in place with 3 bolts, as you're doing setup.
Is the driveshaft cotter pin installed? The last one I built I used too big of a pin and it would hit in one spot on the differential. Changing to a smaller cotter pin...

Just wondering if there are advantages of the x rods. I’m needing to order a set of rods for my 1915, just want to know to best ones to get.

The rod will get more friction than the cap because it is pushing down when firing and pushed up when on compression. The cap is only dragged along by the movement of the rod. However by drilling a hole in the center of the cap with a dippper, it will pump more oil into the rod if it is X'd. The Model A actually had the dippers built into the...

Saturate with MEK and keep it saturated until it softens. You can do this by continually painting the MEK on the areas you want to remove with an old paint brush or get a rag and pour MEK on it and press the saturated rag into the nooks and crannies. And it's definitely not suitable for finding matched coils since it cannot show firing characteristics of the coil.
At the time Henry and company put their latest to the public were they concerned with matching coils.
Considering that the induction coils used...

I took these two parts off of the rear windows and I can't remember where they go. One for each side? Car is coming along good. Just painted the body. Still have the fenders and hood to paint. You have to lay down to look at the one picture!!!!!
Last post
They should go under the rear quarter belt rail where the window assembly goes. The original felt window channel sits in them.

Anyone have an STS coil tester?

Picked this up at garage sale today for $1, so no big investment if it isn't what I think it is. Sure looks to be a buzz box tester. Google search for STS coil tester brings up an old listing for Mac's sellit it as a Model T coil tester, but Mac's is gone and the link does not upgrade to Eklers so I'm presuming this product is no longer being...
Last post
That STS is designed for the early coils and has the bottom coil connection slightly to the right.
So, the newer coils have to be set slightly off straight or the test set appears not to work.
You can see the col sparks coming of the termina and in the small window to the right of the red spark plug connector for testing those.

If you are installing the old axle seal you will use the steel washer outbound of the hyatt bearing.
474627s.jpg
If you are using the modern axle seal with o rings, do you still install the steel washer?
101s.jpg
Last post
No, the steel washer is not used. It keeps the bearing and felt in position for the original type seal. The modern seal keeps the bearing in position by itself.

Can some one post a photo of the door inside for a Mercury speedster? I've seen the framing but I'm wondering what the door upholstery looks like.
Last post
Thanks to all that posted. At this stage we don't know what may have been done in a previous restoration and we don't know how many variations there may have been at the factory. I've seen quite a few minor differences in other parts even on bodies that look to be original, so I'm sure doors would be no different.

Air flow in NH carb

A while a back I cut a junk NH body in half. Has anyone removed any of the hump to improve air flow? The white portion of the hump could be removed to more closely resemble the straight through design. Has anyone tested this out?
Last post
It would make more sense , rather than take the dremel to the NH Carb, to adapt a carb such as an SU or Amal to the Model T intake to improve fuel flow.

Was there ever an updated Tag for that carburetor?

Why do you think it took Ford so long to see the obvious on pickup beds. Most of you know the pickup was finally introduced in March 1925, but they had a prototype made in late 1924.
Last post
Takes me around 45 minutes to replace the turtle deck with the pickup box and vice versa. Most of that is reattaching the tail, brake and turn signal lights.

If you own a Model T Ford, why?
Reading post I see where owners experience issues that original owner experienced when and with the introduction. Tyre size, timers, batteries, starting with the crank and magneto only and more.
There are those who like earlier owners want more speed. Usually in the form of cylinder head changes and over head...

What is top speed on TT truck?

I was talking to a fellow today who has double T truck and in conversation I asked what it would run and was told that he could do 40. That can't be right, can it? He said that it has a 2 speed accessory transmission and a stock TT differential. I thought that 25 mph would be a high estimate. Just curious. Thanks and God bless.
Last post
I tried the 3 brass screw thing. It didn't work. TT driveshafts need to have a machined area for it to possibly work. Most TT driveshafts are machined off center because it was cheap and fast and only spinning 1600 rpm max with 20 hp.

I actually disconnected the shackles on one side and withdrew the perch and made sure the angle tipped the axle forward. It did.
Do you mean maybe tipped the axle backward ? The top end of the kingpin should be tilted back, toward the rear of the car.

I am building the rear end for my 26 speedster and i am measuring the gear lash. All the gears are new as are the thrust bushings and the axles. I am using a modern drive shaft spindle setup with the roller thrust and shims. The ring gear is torqued down, no burrs on the differential housing. I have been using the club book on building the rear...

I have a small piece of a right housing that I bolt to the left of the rear end I'm working on that helps align the drive shaft to the left housing.
One other issue I had was the ends & bore of the tapered bearing housing were not concentric so you could change the clearance by rotating
the spool in the housing.

Thanks. Yes I have the cotter pin out. I’ll rig up something to help press it out, not worried about the old pulley.

With the touring season kicking into high gear, I want to mention a oft-neglected check that may save you big trouble and $$. When was the last time you checked the tightness of your rear axle nuts? In my opinion, loose nuts are the main cause of damage to the taper of your axles and even your wheel hubs. I've seen scored axles, wallowed-out...

Chris, sorry for not checking with you first. The photo popped up on a google image search. One of the guys in our club forgot to install a cotter pin in one of his wheel nuts. After a short drive the nut loosened and the wheel fell off...on a busy street of course. Nobody thought to get a photo - they were too busy dodging cars.
