Hey Rich.
Was your Coupe as mutilated like the one pictured? It could be rebuilt but it would be a piece at a time to do it and patience. The one pictured surely has some splintered and broken wood. If the driver got out of the car without being cut up by the glass they were lucky!!
I’ll bet that one went to the salvage yard and mostly got...

Generator Test Stand Question

First post
I have a generator test stand that my dad made years ago. Not fancy, but works great. However, for the load , I need to have a 6V battery handy. Problem is, I don't often have one laying around to spare. My current one is a 6V Optima that belongs in my Sedan. It's at full charge right now and frankly, I don't like putting more charge into it with...

So, the question is, is there a resistance load that I can build into my test stand to replicate the load of a battery? Ohms? Watts?
It's not as easy as that because a resistive load is very different to a battery. There's nothing to actually clamp the generator voltage as the output voltage rises - unless the load current is greater than the...

If the seller is trying to avoid paying a fee, find out what the fee is and offer to pay for both the goods and the fee via the normal payment method. That way, he gets the full payment he wants and you'll be protected if the deal goes south. If he balks, skip the deal.

I have a brass T in the shop that presently has a 12v Group 121R battery rated at 550CCA and a T starter & later hogshead retrofitted. In my experience, full size batteries outlast the smaller ones almost without exception. Applying a heavy draw, such as a T starter, to a small battery will probably shorten its life, and they seem to come with a short life built in. For non-starter use, a smaller battery ought to do fine, other than its lower storage...

Is there a sure-fire way to identify an original New-Day timer cap? With all the Repos that have been made I suspect it would be easy to be mistaken at a swap meet.

The original New Day timers were dark brown. The bodies were made of Bakelite. If you rub a spot fairly hard on one for about five seconds to get it warm you'll notice a sort of petroleum aroma to it.

Working on a Ruckstell out of a '15 Touring from the Lake Tahoe area many years ago - anyone recognize this type of outboard axle bearing ? The p.s. has what appears to be knock-off tabs across from each other - not so on the Ruckstell half ? Federal # FS88508 on the outer carrier.
Also: how not to bush a #160 housing !
Last post
Appreciate the comments Hap - supposed history of this '15 Touring was it was one of the xxx number built during the 1915 San Francisco Expo ! I'll check the housings a bit closer BUT they both take the later open spool & it's a later type torque tube so I'm assuming they were modified .

Hi Tom,
The T-GO head is a good runner, they do need a water pump as they don't seem to thermosyphon very well. D.P. had two of them & he said that
they are from a batch that had porosity issues and needed to be repaired many times. W.M. has one one his 13 and it seems to be indestructible.

I know you're saying hack fenders because they're not rounded on both ends, but I think hack fenders would not be so long. Maybe TT fenders with one end modified to attach to the running board?

Another T product that’s being offered online as a “fits all”. Sold as a 1908-27. It doesn’t fit all and manufactured by folks who don’t have correct information about Model T’s. Definitely not made by knowledgeable people. Same type of thinking that all Model T’s were black.

Looking for a brand name or information on a set or 4) 8-spoke Model t steel wheels I recently acquired. All was well until I measured them for tires. All 4) 24 . So 30 x 3's would work but think they wouldn't look correct or perform well especially on a Tudor. Are 32 x 4's an option? Any advice appreciated. (Or a set of 23 steel Wheels)

Terry,
Are you thinking of JR Means (Hot4Cyl on eBay) from Dunnegan, MO? His website is: jandshotrodasylum.com and his card says that he does engine rebuilding, coils, transmission repair, machine shop, magneto, and rebabbiting work.
That's the Dude. I have one of his old parts sheets showing many more OF parts than his website shows. i bought...

I know this is not truly Model T, but perhaps I can get some information.
I have about 2/3 of an original one (missing the top half of the body). Looking online, I see that in the past someone has reproduced these lights. Were the parts “authentic”(would the parts interchange)?
I’m considering making a pattern and casting the piece I’m missing.
Last post
I think I have a contact of the folks / students that helped in selling some of Bob Scherzer stuff who use to reproduce those headlights if you’re interested.

Has Anyone Tried Laminated Glass for Acetylene Headlight Lenses?

I managed to crack the flat glass lens on one of the E&J 333 acetylene headlights on my 1912 Flanders 20. I plan to take it to my local glass shop to have a new one made. Should I ask them to make the new one out of plain flat glass like the original, or would laminated glass work? I wonder how well laminated glass would hold up to the heat (I do...

Update - my local glass company called and said they had the plate glass lens ready for pickup, they had a scrap piece of 1/8 inch thick plate glass that was large enough to make one lens. Price, including polishing the edges, was eight dollars, a bargain IMO! It fit perfectly.
I asked them to obtain another piece of glass and make two more...

My brother, Brian, and I sadly post news that our father, Dick Fischer, passed away this week after a period of declining health. Dad really enjoyed this forum over the years. As many of you know, he was a true engineer, and nothing he liked more than talking technical. This is a great place.
We are keeping our 1912 Touring, as it's been in the...

My brain hurts from reading all the post about what engine oil is best for a Model T, I'm sure modern day oil is far superior to what was available when my car was new in 1927. I would like to know is there any oil or probable more appropriate to ask is there any additives I should avoid that could harm my engine. When I restored my 1929 John...

Go to Wal-Mart, auto parts stores, Dollar stores etc and buy their store brand 10W30 and rest assured it will work just fine. It’s a world of difference better than any motor oil that was used in the Model T era. Don’t spend your money on exotic brands that have this and that in it and try to please everybody else. There will always be different...

Hello,
Is there a measurement or does anybody have side by side photos of transmission end plates? I know the 26/27 sits down inside the drum ID and is not interchangeable with the earlier ones, but I'll be darned if I can find how to tell the difference just looking at a loose one sitting on the shelf.

O my God. I finally got some pix to load.
A ways back, I mentioned building left side rux shifters in a discussion. Pix were requested.
Why a left side shift? To shift a rux, you have to be able to use your throttle. With a center shift, one must go thru a bunch of unsafe contortions, unless there is a...

A discarded Model A shift lever is a good candidate for making the Ruckstell shift lever. It is tapered, gives a more factory like appearance and is easily threaded for a shift knob.

I am fixing to start working on a new T and while I am thinking about installing a heater in this one. I really don't mind the cold in winter but my wife would rather not freeze. I have been looking at exhaust heaters with the floor grill. They look like they would be the most effective but I wonder how you shut them off in the summer. Would you...
Last post
IMHO I have heaters on both my Ts that utilize heat from the exhaust pipe, not the manifold and have a fresh air pickup behind the engine fan. No danger of exhaust gas this way. Starting below the manifold connection there is a surrounding cover over the exh pipe that is sealed at both ends and open to a floor grate.

Does anyone go back far enough to know which company was the first to modify the VW Distributor for Model T use, and sell a kit with directions to install it?
There are at least two companies that sold them over 30 years ago!

I bought two of the made in Argentina distributors in the late 60's. From a vintage parts dealer in Rosemead, Calif. They were $25 each ! They had an auto advance that I removed and made it manual. I am still running one of them. It's been trouble free all those years. The distributor head is an exact copy of the Autolite distributor (IAD-400)...

Hi All,
I have found out that the cause of my rear axle oil leaks is engine oil leaking into the back axle and out one of the axle ends. I have followed the kind advice of several people on this forum regarding the installation of the inner neoprene seals - I have also fitted outer neoprene seals. I have been filling the U-Joint with grease on a...

What kind of grease, (if any) do you put on the speedo gears on the drive wheel. I can argue none, given the fact that grease will hold dust and turn the goo into a grinding compound, but hey, what do I know?

My guess is the smaller fibre gear is sacrificial. As they wear they can be easily replaced.

I have searched for the answers on the site but still need some guidance. I have a 1916 Touring and have removed the body for restoration. I have forgotten the reassembly order. Using the same height and width dimensions as the frame, I made one out of 2”x 4”s which served me well. Assembled using 2 1/2” drywall screws, I made it waist high so it made working on the engine very easy. Very sturdy and hardly cost anything. When I was done, I disassembled it and used the lumber on other projects. No storage room needed. Jim...

What is this body bracket?

First post
Today I was sorting and consolidating my boxes of T parts, and found this apparent body bracket. It either came with the 1915 or 1911 projects that I restored. There is no part number on it and is about 9 long. I was wondering if anyone can help identify what it is?
Thanks,
Neal
Last post
I suspect it was a bun tail light bracket, but think it is likely hand forged for the job. The light end of most factory brackets is round. The other end of this one is asymmetric and typical of hand forging. This would also explain why there is no part number on it.
