Valve cover retainers
On the 26 motor did they use bolts or studs to hold the side cover on ?
Last post
Parts books suggest 1926 were studs & 1927 were nickle head bolts. BUT 1926 could be/were replaced with the later version

Here’s a wrecking yard photo taken supposedly in 1918.
There are suppose to be 2 men some where looking around according to the photo caption.
At first it seems like a flood photo but don’t think so.
Would love to have seen that back in the day!
Looking closely at it it’s pretty close to 1918 or not much older than that.

In looking this picture over I see two things that really stand out to me and that is I can only make out maybe three cars that are closed one of the three appears to be a utility type like a bread truck upper left near buildings. There was from my understanding 3 exhaust pipes that Ford used?
4037- style that was used 09-12-early 13. Pipe slid into exhaust manifold. Larry Smith made a run of these a while back.
4307B- new style 1913-20 now with a flared end to late up to the exhaust manifold. Larry seems to indicate that there were some variations in 14? Larry perhaps...

That said, the Model T could and still can go more places that most wouldn't DARE go in a modern 4WD!

Tim, I believe the wear register on the inside edge of the rim is allowing the rim to go further onto the felloe, resulting in the rolled part of the rim making light contact with the felloe. Removal of an Engine With an Aluminum Head

J1MGOLDEN » Thu Dec 21, 2023 9:28 pm

Are aluminum heads strong enough to screw two bolts into the spark plug holes and use them to lift the engine from the Model T chassis?
This aluminum head is the older R. G. Reeder High Head.
Has anyone tried this arrangement with success?
Last post
A 14 mm sparkplug tightened to 15 ft-lb torque generates a clamping force of about 3000 lb. This presents no problem with an aluminum head. A 1/2 in pipe thread is even stronger. According to Joe Bell, a complete engine and transmission assembly weights about or less than 500 lb.
Pull on the spark plug threads without fever
Incidently, the...

Yeah; the Druids over at Stonehenge are thrilled. 🤪
Blimin annoying, they shut all the lay-bys and usual places to park round here to stop all the druids, new age types etc. from parking up. Still considering what Chevy Chase did to Stonehenge, I guess it is understandable.

I realize this is a bit of a contentious topic, but I would like to put it out there just the same.
Question is, whether to add Babbitt to the sides of the rear main bearing saddle on the upper (block) side. One school of thought argument against is that in order to get the Babbitt to stick you should tin the cast iron. Because this area is oil...
Last post
If you are going to add thrust babbitt to the block too couple of way you could do it. Angle the face back top to bottom to lock the babbitt and/or drill anchor holes like the saddle for a mechanical lock.

ON THE IMPORTANCE OF BETTER DRIVING
Back in May 1932, a sixty-one-year-old handyman named John Thompson was tinkering in his garage when he had himself a Eureka moment-a self-centered idea that would virtually eliminate bad driving. In those days, bad driving was commonplace, and US auto- makers weren't sure what to do about...

Most of the mechanical innovations that we see today had been introduced by 1906, albeit often in primitive form. Carburation, wet-cell batteries, roller-bearings, to name a scant few. But reliability had largely not been achieved. Having a mechanic on-board was still fairly necessary in many cases.
I believe Henry Ford changed that with his...

And sometimes solved problems reemerge. One of the issues that has been cited for the reluctance today’s drivers to purchase an electric vehicle is “range anxiety”, the fear of running the battery down before reaching a charging station, and being stranded on the side of the road. There should be no change in fuel mileage because whenever the float bowl is full the mixture will be the same as it is controlled by the mixture needle. Only time it might change is when the float level drops because it is not being replenished by the small valve. At that time the mixture will be lean or the engine will stop. Anyway, the fuel...

A re-build back in the 60's could be possible of genuine Ford parts, using a little oil was normal as Ford never fitted oil rings, some after market suppliers did make an oil ring for the under wrist pin ring groove on cast pistons but they can wear faster as the bottom of the piston cops the full thrust.

Been casually advertising my car for sale. Interesting variety of potential buyers out there. Recently a 21 year old contacted me, very enthusiastic about seeing the car, and very little knowledge of Model T Fords.
Sure, I'll take you for a drive and share what I know---which may or may not convince you to pursue a Model T or any other antique...

The mention of “hostile driving environment” reminds me of the weekend I rented a cabin to spend time with my parents who drove up from Baltimore to meet me on site and decided to surprise them by showing up in the T.
The most challenging part of my trek was taking 77 across the mountain from Smithsburg to Thurmont during a mid-summer Friday...

Here’s an old photo advertising a “picture show” with some Model T’s sitting near by.
I wonder if the guy cranking his T was coming or going. He must really be spinning it since it’s a little blurred.
Probably a silent picture show.
Last post
I wish the picture was a little clearer so we could see the show names or actors to see what was showing! If it was a silent movie there probably was someone playing a piano or? I did a quick search of Helena and as of 2021 the population was around 33.000. It must have been smaller in the teens. It’s the capitol so I guess that’s the reason for...

Greetings MTFCA forum. I just adopted a T and it arrived today. What was supposed to be a quiet project dropped off in my driveway, turned into a neighborhood event.
I was looking for a project that would be pretty much together but needed some work. The goal is to introduce my son (8 yrs old) to the fun of working on a car together and...

Here is an old photo identified on a Facebook post of a Model T crossing a bridge over the Brazos river in 1915. But I’m thinking it’s really later than that possibly closer to 1923. At first glance it looks like a low cowl Coupe but maybe a 24 high cowl? I can’t tell if it’s got the cowl vent on it or not for a high cowl T. Whatever year it is...

I have a Campbell Hausfield spray gun and compressor. I have the spray gun set just right and an in-line glass bowl condensation remover. I shake the paint sufficiently and strain through a nylon stocking to remove impurities, but I am still getting the occasional fisheye. What is the cause of fisheyes and what is the secret to eliminating them....

Fish eyes come from any oily impurities, especially the presence of silicone. It is always better to shake the paint each time and not rely on stirring only, to ensure mixing of the heavy pigments for assured color match. Enamels are prone to skinning over. I learned in my apprenticeship that after application, enamels dry from the bottom up and...

That’s the way it goes on finding parts.
When you’re really looking for a part and after several meets and whatever you have no luck in finding anything. Then when you least expect it shows up.

While I had the wheels off to replace my spindle bushings , I figured I would install my front bearing set .

With that behind...

What is the best thickness for the Babbitt on the thrust faces on the rear main cap?
Making a set of bearing caps to accommodate a Chevy crankshaft.
Let’s just say that some of my calculations were wrong, and the cap is a bit undersize in the length direction. Wondering how thick the Babbitt can be finished before it will cause problems?

You could also do a little work to the saddle and add thrust to the block.

Some tools were specified with finish.
socket.jpg Socket plug tool.jpg
And the 1917 Band nut and Pack nut wrench. Note finish remark, the spec. also called for Cyanide Hardening. So a finish remained after that process, likely a black one, as carbon is absorbed during the hardening.
