Happy and relieved to report that after three weeks of covid illness, I teated negative this morning. It was a tough one requiring a short hospital stay. Although I still have symptoms, they are manageable. I'm so happy I took the antiviral Paxlovid starting the day I tested postive. I'd hate to imagine the outcome otherwise. As it was I was still...

Not completely off-topic as it does relate to our Model T brethren (and thank God, not political). Richard, I hope you improve each day and get back into the swing of things. It seems there is a wave of this crud making its rounds, lots of people have it where I work.

How Much Gas Should a 1927 Model T Use? (UPDATE)

My 12-04-23 post is getting long so I am starting a new post to provide an update.
I recently drove the coupe 20 more miles. I don't have a speedometer so I verified the miles by driving my F150 the distance. As mentioned in the original post, I had previously checked the mpg after a 12 mile run and found it was 7mpg. After that check, I removed...

Freshly rebuilt engines need some time to wear in. .... at least 1000 miles ....Why don't you change your oil, re-torque the head, check for tightness on the manifold bolts and carburetor bolts. Since you're still experimenting, why don't you clean up those plugs and regap them to 25 thousands..... And use the Ford hot air pipe on the carburetor....

I have about 40 miles on the engine.

Ford recommended running on magneto for best performance. My experience is consistent with that. My car runs much better on magneto.
But with a new car, I'd want to check everything, especially things like band and brake adjustment, and make certain that carburetor and ignition settings are within bounds. Also, watch oil and water levels...

The shock uses heavy cast formed brackets on the top and rear end. You can adjust the tension to get desired spring action. I’ve seen a brass case one before. Since I like weird accessories, I’d run it myself just to confuse and baffle other T owners. I’d reduce the spring tension if any concerns about design.

Perhaps one point missed is the consideration of just how much of a garage was needed to keep a Model T going. While pictures such as this one bring up huge quaffs of nostalgia, I can't say that it would be fun to work in such cramped quarters, much prefer the open space of modern clear-span buildings.

Valve timing as done in the old days was done to check the position of the piston when the valve opens. The idea was to have them the same so the engine would run smoothly. In those days the valve stems were ground for the clearance and with a worn camshaft the position of the valve opening could vary with wear. The new cams are ground precisely...

I would like to hear from model T owners or others who collect and / or actually run with a Master carburetor in their cars. In particular it would be interesting to see the different variations of intake horns, manifolds, air/gas mixers and distributer bars.

I keep getting notices from OReilly on FB for 20 percent off. You need to use a code they supply to get the 20 percent off. Usually it never works for the Optima battery, but this time it did. One of my dad’s cars came to him with a Wilmo one-piece manifold on it. It makes installing the manifolds very easy and the car has always run great with the one-piece manifold. With that said, I believe both the intake and exhaust ports on the Wilmo manifold are noticeably smaller than the factory Ford manifolds.

Steve's reply indicates the need to take the measurements from the rear end mounting face to the front of the ball, although the nature of the sliding fit of the driveshaft in the transmission means that little difference may not be of any real consequence. Thanks Erik,
You nailed it. Below is the link, pic and enhancements of a nice 1906 Ford Model K. First year of the K, Ford sold about 300. While that seems like a small number, it catapulted FMC to the position of largest six cylinder producer in the world, out producing Napier, Rolls (first 6), Stevens-Duryea, Franklin, National and the other...

Early this morning noticed that the tack welds on the steel front seat frame lost two bonds on the left side which were put on years ago. So, finally laid four feet of bead around the inside of the thing.
Last post
I’ve been busy working on some early coils.
It doesn’t leave much time to work on my 27.
Right now I have two sets of Jacobson-Brandow coils and a set of high bridge Kingstons.

I bought new rims and a set of blockly tires and tubes and have them all mounted up. The tubes have metal stems and my question is, do I need another nut to lock the stem to rim, or leave it float like a rubber stem?
Last post
Larry, I wouldn't hold my breath while you wait for an American company to make correct tubes. They stopped making them years ago.Why would they start up again to fill a small niche in the market? There's cheap junk tubes which don't hold air, there's thick Blockley tubes which do hold air and have threaded metal stems, and there's thick Michelin...

#1 cylinder running rich

Has anyone else noticed the #1 cylinder of their engine running rich? I regularly check my spark plugs because they're a good read on how the engine has been running. #2, #3 and #4 plugs looked great; no oil or carbon, burn mark about 1/2 way down the ground strap, etc. But #1 plug had carbon build-up (not oil). It wasn't fouled but definitely not...
Last post
If the car runs fine and the color of the #1 plug is a concern, maybe you could find a plug for #1 that is one or two steps hotter than the other three.
I used to have a Nissan pickup with dual plugs per cylinder. Nissan specified a different heat range for the two plug positions.

My T sat for a while, and at least one of the valve seats got rusty and pitted. I have all new valves coming, and i'd like to clean up the seats also. I see various valve seat cutters on eBay used for under $100, but I'm leery. I don't want to spend $350 on a Neway tool that I'll probably never use again. Who can help me out?

Hello! I’ve noticed my fan belt is rubbing on my timer and has created a small groove. I know that part of the problem may be the belt, which I plan on replacing. But I’ve noticed there’s a slight wobble in the fan and shaft itself. I’d like to rebuild it so that it doesn’t have play and so that I know it’s good to go. Can someone help guide me...

They are all prone to cracking. My late style fan has 2 cracked blades. (New one on the way!)
I cant say I have ever seen one of the new blades cracked. Good to know.
I had to replace the fan on my '27 due to a cracked blade.

Given a slow revving, low compression engine like a model T, what difference would an extra .005 in the ring gap make. What may be the manifestations of this? In the past I was concerned with too tight clearance but thought little of a bit wider ring gap.
Allan from down under.
Last post
To tight is bad. Can cause extra cylinder wear & ring breakage. Remember a T has no water jacket around the cylinders. A little extra clearance over the tightest manufactures standard recommended clearance is in order, IMO.
A fellow motor builder described extra clearance as not so critical. Its like trying to throw a bucket full of water thru a...

I am not certain how to present this question and not feel dumb.
Dwell is defined as - Dwell angle is the amount of time, measured as degrees of rotation, that contact breakers close in a distributor. Unless dwell angle is accurate, ignition timing won't be accurate.
The discussion on the benefits of setting the dwell of an induction coil with...

This thread has a lot of interesting observations, questions and comments. At the risk of motivating a lot of interesting feedback I'm going to chime in with observations of my own on coil performance. Obviously, one must have the cushion spring set to about 0.005 in and the point gap to 0.030 to start. Next the points must be clean and meet in...

Allan, according to the Repco digest of Automotive engine re-conditioning, none, providing the .005 is above the minimum of the .003 per inch of bore and not over the max of .005 per inch of bore.

The suppliers sell radiator hose kits. However, I've heard a lot of people say that the hoses in those kits are barely long enough, at best. I've noticed in my search however, that there are some molded...

Maybe too long morphed into too short. Because as Dan pointed out, the lower hoses are too long.

Hi all,
In looking at period photos of T's, so many have a dull paint finish. Few are really shiny. Is this something with the paint chemistry? Or just dust and dirt? Or lack of car wax? Or time to use the wax?
Just curious.

I would suspect that the brake on the left side could be slightly dragging. Not enough to slow the car or cause it to spin but just enough to slow that wheel. Also see if the wheel and axle on that side can be lifted up and down slightly when it is not moving but the brake is off. Leave it on the stands when you make this test. The bearing on that...
