Glass plate in the coils
Replies: 2
by
Dennis_Brown » Fri Feb 09, 2024 5:39 pm
First post
Was the glass plate used in the coils used to insulate the condenser from the winding around the core or what?
Is it still used when coils are rebuilt?
Last post
The original paper capacitors have no outer wrapping or insulative covering.
Thus the dielectric strength is only what can be provided by the tar.
The glass acts as an insulation barrier between the capacitor and the high voltage windings.

Yes, the plug cuts off all the passages, so the oil has to stay in each well when installed.

Would a 7x14 dual axle open landscape trailer be safe enough to haul a Model T touring car?

Two Spares is a result of past experience. I have had two flats more than once on a trip. I loaned my tandem trailer to the XW & HIL once & it
came back with three new tires on it. I don't run trailer tires more than five years regardless of tread depth, tires are cheaper then body work.

Anyone know or tried to see if Rootlieb will sell just the louvered hood sides for a 26-7 T? From what I remember there were 4 different suppliers of Model A hoods, with varying hinge location. Not the pattern, the location, so you had a 1 in 4 chance of our sides hooking up to your tops and having a good edge front and rear. I’m sure there were more suppliers in the T era. I have the chassis on jack stands now, but will mount tires and wheels and drop to floor and then measure up to the 81 body top height to coompute body dimensions. This is the exhaust manifold from the barn fresh tourer I am working on returning to the road. It is not as warped as some, as the front three ports are still in line.

Last post
Well if your time is worth about $5 per hour I guess it makes sense compared with the cost of a new manifold. When you get done you still have mismatched ports which impede flow and probably poor threads for the pack nut. But you will have the satisfaction of saving an original part that others would have scrapped so that means something.

Yes, but....
You will probably need to remove some material on the lower side of the casting the pedal shaft sits in for reverse & brake. Primarily the brake.
Not enough clearance for the later band ear attaching stuff. If you have the HH off, make the modification. Makes things easier.
You may be able to do some minor grinding on the band ear....

On my recently acquired 26 Runabout, one of the five wire wheels has this hole in the hub. Any ideas why it is there? I've considered it could be used for some kind of lock like a bicycle cable lock, but there doesn't seem to be a way to use a cable lock on the spare tire mount.

If you have a mounting for a spare in the middle of the back of the car, it could be for a wire for a stop light.

Don't know if the current set up is OE or Bubba, but it looks sketchy to me. Current fuel line runds straight back from Holly NH carb awfully close to the exhaust pipe and then bends 90 degrees or so and under the round fuel tank to the sediment bowl. The new axle shafts are 1.063”. Originals are 1.062”. The original gears can have variations in their inside diameter. Some are worn oversize and some are undersize enough to be too tight of a press fit on a new axle shaft. I have always liked this photo my father took in 1934 I'm guessing. My first T was a '25 touring like this and we loaded it with camping gear a few times. The White bus next to it is a Model 15-45 like the one I have. Venturing to the park from Ogden, UT would have certainly been an adventure. The inner tube(s) dragging the ground worries me....

Looking at this design, we can see the improvement in upgrading the device in the future.
Thanks batteryhowl . We can clearly see here, the nascent beginnings of function specific design, with maximization of parameters as the ultimate goal.

I’ve changed the carburetor and manifold necessitating an additional 7.5” of gas line from the gas shut off valve. Not having additional .25” ferrules, I drove into town for other chores and stopped in a hardware store for a 23 cent brass ferrule. They were out !! So I bought a white plastic ferrule. Should I attempt to use this on my ‘14 or hold...

Pat, the copper aircraft line does have flared ends. It simply drains fuel from a wing tank to a center tank. In my 78 year old airplane the fuel line is exposed from the valve on the wing tank to the valve on the center tank so I can see it while flying. The line from the main tank to the firewall fitting for the gascolator and from said...

Hi All,
I have had my 27 Tudor for a few years and it's been working fine. Once this summer and twice this week, the starter locked up and would do nothing. Tuesday After working on the roof in about 45 deg. I hit the starter and the car almost started a couple of times (starter working). Wiring is not the problem. Then hit the starter button and...

I have a 1926 fordoor that I purchased recently that is in bad shape and is missing roof wood and also the belt line at the back.So I don’t know exactly how to make the pieces since they are not there for a pattern.. I know that I can buy these from a couple of sources but would prefer to make myself. Does anyone know if there are drawings...

The roof profile that you sent is different from my car in that yours is 1.5” thick and what I have is just 1” . Also yours has a rounded relief edge on the outside bottom where the body panels would tack on . Mine does not have that detail. Does having that detail allow for better rain protection? I am about to tackle the roof and wanting to do...

Old radiator company

Has anyone ever heard of the State Radiator Company of Los Angeles? This brass Ford radiator has that tag on it and there is no Made in USA on it. Old reproduction perhaps? Nothing turns up on the inter web.
Last post
I guess that makes sense, especially since the tag is upside down! And I’m assuming the radiator is a 1911 or early 12? From my understanding, Ford started putting “Made in USA” under the logo in 1912.

I have a 26 Tudor sedan mostly restored. I need the upper rubber that seals the door to the body when closed. I assume that it is the same as the sides but don’t see it for sale. My first T and first T engine and transmission rebuild.

Hi Gary,
I've been finishing the interior on the 27 Tudor and got the doorway seal piece finished. The V piece of metal has material from the interior (cloth) wrapped around it. The seal is a piece of leather-looking welting tucked into the V metal strip which is pushed up on to the steel rib of the body in the door opening. I used my original...

Missing valve clip

I was working on getting my T back up and running after replacing starter motor which failed due to bad solenoid.
All that worked just fine and got the engine to start and run as normal
Coming back a day later could not start the engine due the choke being locked open
After removing carb found out the choke butterfly valve was loose and displaced...
Last post
The valve was no longer centered due to lack of clip and in turn it would no longer rotate in the valve body
Did have a stove pipe, since it is upstream not sure it affects anything
I will take the carb apart, nothing to loose with doing that
Thanks

Fix for ‘26-‘27 radiator shell crack

I’ve got a dent free ‘26-‘27 radiator shell with a 4” crack running parallel to the back edge on the top of the shell. I need to get that fixed before I send it off to get plated. First off, what’s the difference between brass welding and brazing? Either one of those an option? Silver solder? Silver bearing solder?
Last post
Forgot to mention, Equally important is the flux. My local weld shop also provided me with Harris brand flux and I believe it made a difference.
Been so long since I have done silver solder, that I was going to ask about flux for it. What is a good flux for it? I have several kinds, but some of what I have bought in recent years is garbage for...

Timing Light

I have hit & miss engines, some of which use the Ford buzz coil for ignition. I have designed and built a LED timing light that runs on a 9V battery and has a clamp for the spark plug wire. The buzz coil produces a bunch of sparks when activated, but my design will only flash on the very first spark. Would there be a use for this on checking the...
Last post
Yes, that is the problem with mechanically generated spark ignition systems. Its a real problem with a lot of hit & miss engines. As the engine speeds up, the timing gets more retarded; not what you want. Ford knew that, so he allowed the driver to adjust the timing at any time. And drivers back then knew how to do it.

electric starter

You must elaborate.
Your profile says you have a 24. Is this the T?
If it came as a non starter car, one can be added by removing the delete plates.
Does the 24 have a starter that isnt working?
Is your issue with an earlier T (pre 19) that wasnt offered with a starter?

3 transmission thrust washer thickness for a 15

I am working on a minimally touched 15 transmission.
The correct thick clutch disk is present, but the large brass thrust flange has been removed from the bushing.
3 later washers are present. The clutch hub was loose.
My question is: What is the correct thickness supposed to be for the 3 thrust washer stack for proper clearance in this early...
Last post
Maybe he made the washers out of scrap from somewhere else in the process and that’s why he changed the dimension. Maybe somebody else has the answer for that also because I would love to know.
To the best of my knowledge also, they carry the same part number between the two.
Why he did that? You’d have to dig deep into Henry Ford’s brain.
The...

I have no dog in this fight, just a brain fart. Recent thread on stuck valve discussed adding a little MMO to the gas tank to help lubricate valves. I have a truck driver friend that adds a little diesel fuel to every tank of gas on carb engines. Lawn tools, lawn mowers, military vehicles, etc. His thinking is the addition of a little oil with the...

If this is about valves that stay up, be sure to check the valve pins and spring washers. Do a search and you’ll find a thread a few years ago about bad parts.
They would fail at a few thousand miles.

Hello group. My grandfather had this trunk that he claimed was from a Model T, but from all of the research that I've done, I'm not so sure that this is correct. Unfortunately my grandfather passed many decades ago, so there is no way to clarify though him.
Does this look familiar to anyone? I'm shocked that the leather straps are still intact!...

One of my first jobs while I was still in high school in the 1950's was for an auto garage. I got jobs like pulling off the head or things like that. However I got to observe the work being done by the experienced mechanics. The Snap on tool dealer came by every so often, maybe once a month or so. When mechanics bought new tools, they would trade...

Noting that this trim part doesn't appear to be available anymore from vendors, and also the fact that what had been available was meant for a 3/4 thick dash, while the originals were 13/16 , I'm hoping our members might be able to offer suggestions as to how to solve this problem. Also, in discussing this detail with friends, an opinion arose...

I could make the the two mitred...
