Comparing Fuel Consumption of a Ford Model T with....

So I just made an interesting discovery...
My Model T achieves approximately 18 miles per gallon (or about 13L/100km). Now by today's standards, that's not the best fuel economy, considering I used to own a Ford Mondeo Titanium (diesel), which used to get about 45 miles per gallon (or about 5L/100km).
But interestingly, I now drive a RAM 2500...

MPG figures have not improved much. Not sure what my T is doing yet as not done enough journeys to find out, but here are some figures from cars I have owned:
1963 Cadillac Coupe De Ville 14mpg - averaged over a long journey from San Francisco to Miami
1966 Vauxhall Viva 38mpg
1990 Renault 21 40mpg
1990 Jaguar XJS 5.3 V12 18mpg
2004 Peugeot 406...

Apparently it wasn't too hard to get a Ford dealership in the early days. I wonder if the coupe is stock in trade or there for repair ? This minimalist enterprise reminds me of Floyd Clymer's stories of being a Ford dealer in Berthoud, Colorado before he was even a teenager.

Well I believe that was Henry Ford's concept anyway. The way he saw it, if you're going to own a car, you ought to know how it works so you can look after it properly, and fix it if it breaks down.
How times have changed. We are all so lazy now, just call Roadside Assist...
Realistically how many of us even do our own oil changes any more? :?...

So it would appear that a Manning River Times photographer was present at the Harrington Festival car show & parade!
The secret to looking young... Stand next to an old car and you'll look 10
I'm often amazed by how popular my Model T is at a car show (might be because it's often the oldest car there)

One of the funniest things to ever happen with my T, was about 10 years ago at a car show, this dearest elderly lady came up and had a look at my Model T, then she asked me Have you had it from new? .... I was 26 years old at the time... not realising she was actually being serious, I cheekily replied, Oh yes, I turn 110 years old next month!

That thread needs to hold a torque of 100 ft lbs. If the nut slips, it will not hold and no mater what you do, it will not stay tight. welding and re-threading, will change the temper of the steel axle and cause it to be weakened. The cost of a NEW axle is worth it.

RHD handbrake quadrant

First post
How do you replace a 4 hole handbrake quadrant.
Does the running board and splash guard need to be removed, can you remove the splash guard without removing the touring body?
Do you grind off the rivet heads, considering that there is gallons of fuel in close proximity and the fuel line and (leaking) carby is within spark range.
Any advice...
Last post
If the cold chisel doesn't work, you are left with drilling the rivets out, so the valance panel needs to be removed, and that means the running board too.
The back two rivets could be drilled off from the INSIDE, but to do the same with the front two, you would need to remove the hogshead! I reckon the valance panel would be easier.
The barn...

You don't have it arranged correctly. Move the pinned end of the front bow from where it is and place it in the hooked bracket as shown. The position you have it in now is where it goes only when the top is down.

A survivor demonstrates the longevity of Ford cars for a go-getter salesman. The photo was captioned 1930s but no cars in the background seem to be newer than 1930.
The object of the rolling billboard would seem to be a 1914 car, with interesting modifications. Rather beat-up, but not bad for a car some sixteen years old in that era. IMG_4949.jpeg

Interesting to see another set of these odd fenders. They could have been a late 1910s or 1920s after-market replacement fender (set?). The early hubs are very thin at the outer bearing, removing the old cup and fitting the timkin cup needs to be done very carefully as it can stretch the hub and the brass cap will no longer screw on.

Instructions may help, for this seal the metal washer is for the Hyatt bearing race to butt against, just like the washer for the outer felt seal. So metal out ;)
A long pick with slight hook can grab that seal to remove, may have to pierce the plastic, likely wrecking that seal. :(

On Wednesday, 16th August, Jean Watson, of Old Bar, NSW, celebrated an astonishing milestone, her 104th Birthday! The weather was incredible for this auspicious occasion, and just as well, as this lovely centenarian was able to enjoy a ride in my 99 year old Ford Model T, which incredibly, is younger than its passenger!
Many thanks to Taree...

I am starting the design and fabrication of a trailer hitch for our 27 touring. It has wire wheels, factory spare tire carrier/ gooseneck, and full bumpers. If anyone has any input or has already built a hitch, any help will be appreciated. The spare tire and bumpers is going to complicate things. The trailer will weigh aprox 1000 lb fully loaded....

If I remember correctly, some A models came with a bar between the two sides of rear bumperettes, and I have seen trailer hitches mounted/welded to that bar. Perhaps the same method could be used on your T. It is certainly neater than some Heath Robinson constructions.

Brooks, I can hardly believe how good and flush the solit in your rims lines up. You are fortunate to have such good rims. Usually they are a bit mangled/hammered/miss aligned through years of being worked on by tyre fitters, some of whom were not well versed in the correct fitting procedures.

The ground terminal was only required if you were using a real Magneto for the sparks.
Those Magnetos require a ground to turn off the sparks and stop the engine.
Not many are in use anymore, but some switches still have the ground terminal.

We have, like Ed, run 600W in our Warford and Chicago transmissions in several different cars over the years. Last year, I decided to try a synthetic gear oil in the Chicago transmission. Greetings everyone,
on my car, on the rear axle there is a washer on each side between the axle shaft nut and the rear wheel hub. I had always assumed they belong there, however I can't find any reference to them in the service manual and I haven't found anything searching the forums.
Without them, hub and nut would be too far inboard for the...

First of all, thanks a lot for your feedback & advice!
Frank don't let rebuilding..actually it's replacing..the rear axles dissuade you. Do note I used plural. Do them both while you have the rear end all apart.
That is what I'm planning to do - I haven't had the other rear wheel off yet, can't access it the way the car is parked now - but I...

James, you have hit the nail on the head nicely. The Stewart speedos with the plastic tumblers are serviceable, and that is the one Russ sold me. Those with the potmetal tumblers are often not rebuildable, even if they can be dis-assembled. Another forum topic asking about sheds for Model T storage got me thinking about early solutions that were offered for the same problem. They were billed as the budget-minded solution for the storage of a Ford or...

The garage in my Cape style house in Boston was not much bigger. It was a standard 3rd of the basement garage. My F150 never fit in it and working on my Edsel I could only open one door fully if I put it on dolly's and slid it sideways. Had to park it depending on what end of the car I wanted to work on with the door closed.

The Dodge ones with which I have limited experience are a size bigger than the one on my Tarrant tourer. The Tarrant has the fuel tank suspended under the spare tyre carrier at the rear of the car. Hence the need for the vacuum tank.
On a one-of-kind Duncan and Fraser built tourer, they lowered the front seat, so that meant a special hand made...

Do I need the longer spring, Lang's 3425BQ, because my kevlar brake and reverse bands are not under spring tension when released. The only spring tension is from the band itself wanting to open up. 1/8-1/16 of travel space before spring begins to tension.
Nuts spin easily by fingers and I don't want one coming loose and getting lost in the...
Last post
Band springs need to be long so pressure is placed on the band in an outward direction so the adjusting nut and lock washer are always engaged and will not come loose and drop into the engine causing serious damage to both engine and occupants.
