I wrote this article for Secrets Magazine in March of 2007. I ended up building the engine. No one bought it! Then the low speed drum in the stock engine in my Fordor broke and the decision was made. In it went. Here's a video of it running.
I think I'm going with the A crank on the next one I build for myself. I may or may not put this head on...

Here’s a job I do sometimes on model T’s and A’s. Both can have issues with the rear cap. Making just one bearing cap takes almost as much time as all three. You have to pour the cap and a dummy block and bore to the size needed. On this job I am making a cap with a bronze thrust on the front end to keep the end play tight. This car had magneto...

Many times I have added babbitt to the front of a rear main cap and faced it to size. Often with the engine still in the car.
What do you do to reface the thrust surfaces of the crankshaft? They're usually grooved.
I guess I misunderstood your question.
The cap is made just wide enough to refit. The groves in the thrust surfaces of the...

Wrist Pin Lubrication in Jahns Pistons

I am going through my 1912 engine that was put together by the previous owner. He appears to have done a good job, but let's just say I am changing some things to suit my preferences. Looking at the wrist pin setup in these Jahns pistons, I don't see a lubrication hole to catch oil from the splash system to lubricate the wrist pin. (Of course, I...
Last post
Scary stuff, drill the holes, do away with the wire and turn either the rods or the pistons as one or the other is in backwards, ie, the wrist pin lock bolt faces the camshaft and the split skirt faces away from the cam.

Reassembled a non-running 1925 engine. Rebuilt coil box, new wiring harness, rebuilt carburetor… Starts right up, idles great…runs in low gear and high on level. After heated up completely loses power - stalls trying to pull in low gear. I have to let it cool off to even start it again? Any ideas where to begin?

Will “tight” pistons and/or wrist pins break in with time and patience? Is there a process I should follow? Or are these reasons to pull an engine and work on internally immediately?
No.
Tight pistons will gall, depositing aluminum in the bores. There is a maybe on breaking them in.
Tight wrist pins are more likely to seize & do serious...

Which Spark Plug to Use in Early Low Head

I have a 1912 with original engine. My question is what type of spark plug do you folks with the early Model T low heads run? The compression differences in the early heads are minimal. 4-1 vs 3.9-1.
I currently run the new brass tops in a milled head with hi dome pistons. 95# compression. (6-1)

Adding 2 diameter will raise the vehicle about 1 and allow a little higher road speed, maybe 5%. Most trucks sit higher at the back unless loaded. On dual rear wheels, clearance between tires may be an issue with oversize tires.

Long long ago there was a rumour that there were a few special hogsheads made that had extra slots in them for magnets. These magnets were the same as the inside ones but adding them to the slots made the engine run without gasoline. Does anyone have any articles, photos, or knowledge about this super secret feature ?

Google John Worrell Keely Model T and you will find the BS you are looking for on the internet, including at least one MTFCA forum thread.

Maybe he was going to change the rear flat tire on the Touring.

It was 115 years ago today, on Saturday October 3rd, 1908 that Ford took out the first ad for the Model T. I recently picked up a copy of the issue on ebay for only $12. To add to my post. I've run my New Days 95% on magneto. Otherwise I have a 12 volt system. My coils were all rebuilt and adjusted by Ron Patterson. I'm fairly new to Model T's. I have a 1916 runabout with a 1922 engine and trans. Since I've owned it the clutch has chattered a bit when going from low to high. I have only driven it a little bit (maybe 50 miles) but the chatter seems to be getting worse. Should I try adjusting the three screws on the pressure plate?
Martin
Last post
If a slight rpm difference causes chatter, I would look for clutch lug wear. Disks could be snagging on lugs preventing even pressure.

Steve said 'Tell everyone that I am enjoying my existence in Indiana, but I don't want to make permanent residence here! Please tell everyone that I am looking forward to seeing them all soon.'
He can talk on the phone, and he prefers to be in rehab close to home.

Hi, I was made more aware of LBJ's very original 1910 Model T Donated by Henry Ford II by this forum. We visited the LBJ childhood home and ranch in Johnson City this weekend and there it was! It is on loan from the LBJ presidential library. These pictures are as close as I could get to it.

I do believe that ‘10 touring was presented to an absentee LBJ in Fredericksburg TX on the 17th Annual Texas Tour sponsored by the Alamo City Horseless Club of America in June of 1970. I had to go out to a display case and find the multicolored brass tour plaque to relay this info. Which begs the question: Whatever happened to those beautiful...

Greetings all.
Like the fool that I am, I did not take enough pictures of the car when I tore the original upholstery out of my 22 Touring barn find. Guess I was too busy chasing all the spiders and mice out of it to think about it. The front seat bottom edge was badly rusted, and I replaced all that sheet metal - The back seat also had some...

Hello all, I have a question about fitment of my front fender and running boards, when I bought the car they were pushed down where the rear tab of the front fender meet with the front of the running board. I took em apart and those bolt holes aren't even close to lining up?!
Wanted to ask what I am missing here? I am pretty sure these are the...
Last post
Part of George's fix needs to consider the bolts that hold the apron down on the frame. These need to be loosened to allow the fender to move. If it can't move there, the rear cant shift. You may need to elongate the frame bolt holes a little. See if you can put all the fastenings in before tightening any of them. Levering stuff into place and...

It say 6005-I. Anyone know what engine this fits? Thanks.

Going through old videos of my work - this car is still winning 1st prize in all the shows from what I heard. Short and shot on a cell phone 11 years ago but it's 100% new and out of my shop. I'm being forced out of early retirement here so if you need your T restored done let me know.

Reopening my Model T Restoration Shop and going through some photos, looking for business card files, etc.. Found this car from 2006 - It's the first camping conversion kit that I'm aware of in a 1913 Model T Ford. I didn't take videos back then, so it's a slide show in random order. I hope you all enjoy seeing the photos. I'm shocked at how...

Cleaning up an original condition 1914 steering column, I find it's a lot of fun to note details of manufacture. This steering gear was provided by Dodge Bros. as evidenced by the D stamped on the underside of the spark/throttle quadrant. The round stamping seems to say Detroit but I can't make out much more. Maybe someone has seen this stamp and...

All your fault Rich. Causing a bunch of old men eagerly turning their phones on selfie and ‘flash’ only to discover wonderful inscriptions on the underside of our ‘14 brass quadrants. Thank you for the thrill of discovery ! I also found the D and semicircular DODGE BROS on mine 🙏😃

Hi,
Recently, dug this out of the shed.
Included are the markings on a counterbalance crankshaft. Does anyone have an idea who made this?
thanks
Kevin

My understanding from old timers, is that there are 2 different counterbalanced cranks. 1 that is prone to break, and 1 that (can't) be broke.
I have no idea how you tell the difference. Wished I knew.
I have 1 that I got used that has 5,000 miles at 60 MPH and still going.

The way I had the NRS difference was that the N has N o running boards
The R has R unning boards but no splash aprons and the S has S plash aprons.

I know they both were fed by oil thron up by the flywheel set up. My question is how did it get into the front of the motor.if oil went into a drilled bolt, how did it get inside. Isthere a hole sideways thru the block on the inside of the bolthole or is there a drain hole in one of the front pan bolt holes by the crankshaft?
It has been a while...

I replaced a starter foot switch in my '23 today. The post that comes from the on the battery tightened down and then started to spin as I tried to tighten further. I stopped tightening. Post tightened enuff. Cable does not move.
Question..... if that cable connection stud has spun and moved while tightening the retaining nut, is the 3 tiered...

Dan, that is not the best quality switch to buy.
The starter switch is not a good place to save a dollar.
I had the top rivet come out on mine and engage the starter when I was driving about 30 miles an hour.
This was a fire truck and the battery box was on the running board, so it was easier to open the circuit.

On another thread (not mine) I commented that my '27 is so hard to crank that I can't. Even the starter cranks slowly. The battery is of sufficient capacity and is in excellent condition. In the thread that I mentioned, there were numerous suggestions about horrible things that could be wrong. Then someone suggested that I remove the spark plugs...

Update: I pulled the plugs and cranked the engine with the starter. It cranks at about the speed that I would expect with the plugs in. I am going to carefully go through the starting circuit looking for voltage drop. If that doesn't yield results I guess that I will try to find someone who will go through the starter for me. I have had one on...

So I found this homemade 1 horse stock trailer earlier this year. Looking at fabricating a hitch for my model TT in order to pull it. I have a life sized fiberglass horse that will fit perfect in it! 😎 Does anyone out there have trailer hitches on their TT's and if so, any pictures? I've seen a few on T's, not many on TT's.
Also, if you have any...

Metz related threads always capture my attention.
I am surprised that the engine in the original post still retains its sheet metal valve covers as they are often long gone by now.
While the Metz engine has a superficial resemblance to the Model T engine, there are significant differences between the two.
The Model T engine is cast en bloc and...
