I'm going back together with my motor, and wondering if I should replace my brake drum as it looks a little scored. I can feel mild variation on the surface. Does anyone have experience with this?

Hi Carson,
How are you doing?
If you have it this far apart it would be a good idea to take it the rest of the way and inspect it for cracks, worn logs, cracked clutch plates,
worn bushings& pins. You never know what you will find or how much trouble you avoid by looking a little farther into things.
I recently took a trans apart to find the...

I was going through my various Model T wrenches today, and noticed that one of the Ford ones appears to be an early version of a T-1917 transmission band wrench. It is shown in the photo next to a later more typical looking one. The opening widths match the other 1917 wrench shown

That early wrench is really early. Between that one and the later lightweight T1917 branded ones, there was another plain one, but is was not as chunky as the one in the photo. I have no idea when that change was made.

First, let me apologize for such a long post.
I only own one Model T but thru our club I have worked on roughly a dozen cars - most bought by people new to Model T's. A few problems have come up over and over again, to the point where I would tell any buyer to expect to have to deal with at least some of them, sometimes at substantial cost....

Tim,
Great list of items to look for. I bought my first T I wish I'd looked for all that. Having been a Model A owner for 20 plus years I thought I could know a Model T status. I pretty much had to go though your list, 1 to 5!
One thing I would add, that I wished I knew about, was the wood. Mine is a '22 center door that if I knew about the...

Let me know of any interest on this thread.

Following the discussion about using the magneto to charge battery, why can't a wire resistor of equal cold resistance of a 1156 12.8 volt bulb be used? As for overload or short protection a fuse in series. The diode from google search, is a 1N5402 diode which is rated at 3 amps and 200V peak repetitive reverse voltage. 494541.jpg

Art,
Without a part number it's not possible to say definitively but it's likely to be capable of handling the current draw, whether it'd cope with the reverse voltage over time is perhaps less certain.
Like JIm's component most of these diodes are designed for high-current but low-voltage use, whereas in the case of a magneto charger you have...

When I step on the clutch (smartly all the way) the car sometimes bucks unless i have the engine revved up a bit. Then I seem to be starting too fast. I didn't want to adjust the low band too tight. Learning how to use the spark lever and gas lever especially when you’re shifting into low or coming to a stop going down hills is totally different than your new Chev, Ford Dodge or whatever pickup....

Yes, you are partly correct, you can tow a T a VERY SHORT distance slowly, but you can't tow a model T any long distance.

I once loaned my TT to a friend for a parade and he drove it 7 miles into town but it barfed out 1/2 the coolant and didn’t make the parade. He never advanced the spark ! Once you advance the spark on a running T, power just exudes from the engine. Just throw it down 1 1/2” after start.

Greetings -
New problem for the day -
The pin for the Cam to Distributor gear sheered- and the gears are badly worn.
I am now trying to find a source for the distributor and cam gear set for a DELCO REMY 635B -
Snyders and Langs only carry Bosch and Atwater Kent- and none of those look like the gears off my engine.

Scott has a good idea, if the cam was replaced because of wear or choice it would be easyer to install a drive gear with Std threads than having
to cut new threads on the replacement cam. I would quess that the threads on this cam where damaged by over tightening or cross threading.
This will work for a timer & some dissies. As far as hardening...

I got my notice that the registration deadline to have a car in the show at Hershey is August 15th. If you're going, let us know. I'm curious what bringing a car there is like. Just to be clear, there is a deadline for buying spaces or for entering a car in the show. The AACA website can tell you the details. There is NO deadline for simply attending to shop. That's free and wide open. I use the free public parking at Ridge...

RELINING RM BRAKES

RELINING ROCKY MOUNTAIN BRAKES - Of course, linings on RMBs are riveted on to the band. I am aware that bonded linings are largely used on modern cars. Is it acceptable to bond a lining on an RMB band with something like JB Weld? That potentially could be much more secure than rivets and easier to assemble. Opinions, experience?
Last post
Some venders sell RM brake bands & linings ( not installed) looks like close to $500 plus labor to rivet & shipping. I'm thinking reline your self
or go to disc brakes to cut the cost & time of maintanence on RM brakes drive safe & just putup with the purests.

Hard starting with the hand crank can usually be improved by using an appropriate motor oil and making sure that the clutch and band adjustments are correct.
Model Ts function best with a light bodied motor oil, such as 10W30 or 5W20. I find that full synthetic multigrade oil does an excellent job in a Model T in any weather, including very hot...

Has anyone else had fitting problems when installing the new solid roller type on the inside? I found they would not go on over the un-machined part of the axle.
It seems a bit silly to have to take the gear off the inner end of the axle and reassemble it with the bearing in place.

I think it was about 10 years ago, maybe more but someone at Chickasha was making a bottom panel with the troughs already formed that you could weld, after a little work, onto a later teacup pan to give the appearance of a one piece pan. Anyone know whom that was? I’m looking for one to do just that. Any help is greatly appreciated.

High all,
I am planning to install a Atwater Kent distributer on my 1924 T and was wondering what is the best grease to use in the gear
Case where it meets the timing cover? I was thinking maybe John Deere corn header grease. Any thoughts? Thanks

Hi Jim,
I use Lucas Red & Tacky on the Atwater Kent Model H & other closed cove distributers I have it seems to last for a long time even though the
gears are in the open on the H. I also try to install a grease zerk so I can add grease to the upper bearing ( some have a oil cup ) and the gears.
It can be tricky drilling & tapping the old white...

Yes Kaiser, that photo has been posted here and on the AACA forum in the past. I wish I had a link to post for it. I recall it was discussed a fair amount, but I do bot remember much of the discussion detail. I do recall that the cars are four model T Fords and a Le Zebre.

When I built the trunk rack for the '09, I wasn't ready to develop the hinged links for raising and lowering it. I got tired of changing separate links for Up and Down. OK, I've been driving Model T's for many years now and just recently learned something about hand cranking a Model T.
The obvious stuff first. Make sure your timer rod is adjusted to 15° after top dead center. Also make sure your coils are properly adjusted. I use the EECT to adjust mine.
Now for the lighting bolt idea. I was always under the...

A well tuned coil system and good carburetor and good compression, any Model T add should start easily. If it does not start with maybe two lifts on the crank while choked, (cold engine), one more lift on the crank should start it, if it does not start, some area either ignition or poor compression may be to blame. Everything has to be in good...

In the midst of parade season. I noticed when driving to the parade my brakes are crisp and work fine, by the end of the parade, the brakes feel really soft and I ended up using the hand brake a few times. What could be the problem or is that normal?
I am running Rocky Mountain Brakes in addition to the standard equipment.

I have a 26 with large drum rockies, if grease leaks out between the drum and backing plate it will immediately get on the brake pad. Tim, I am not suggesting you are wrong, just offering a tip based on my experience.

I recently completed a coil project for a ‘13 T. The owner has a Heinze box but wanted KW style coils. So four fresh wood boxes in the form of Heinze but KW points and coils. This is a great option for touring. Use the KW’s for touring and keep the Heinze for show.

The charger has a lot of nice features. I like that you can select the amperage and also see how much charge is in the battery. Much nicer than the old chargers.
