Rootlieb Front Fender Installation

Hello,
I'm setting up a test fit for the new Rootlieb front fenders going on my 1913 T project, and the first thing I noticed is that none of the holes for the hood sill bolts or running board bolts are drilled. I'm sure there's a good reason for this, but it adds another possibility of me messing something up. Any recommendations on how to align...
Last post
I am glad no holes are drilled. It allows me to line everything up in its optimal position/alignment for my car. When it all fits, then drill. Do not force alignment by putting any of the components under stress. It will surely lead to cracking in the panels/brackets.

Hi Bryan,
Did anyone mention if your engine is stock it would be a good ideab to use a 10 tooth pinion if you go with the Warford so you don't have too
high of a final drive in OD. Like Ronald said it will give you a good ratio if your touring below 35mph & OD will be good for the faster tours.

Good day everyone
When installing a model T radiator, don’t tighten the two mounting nuts then try to install the support rod by tilting the radiator forward. The support rod (goes from the firewall to radiator) should be threaded in first then tighten the two hold down bolts.
Seems like I always ‘learn by doing’ it wrong.

Some oil will remain in the rod troughs and soaked into the bands and some will stay in tight places throughout the engine.

No axe to grind, no story to tell, but somewhere in the lore it goes that the early 15' open cars may not have had forked mounted lights.
Here is a photo that I was able to pluck from somewhere...shows a T being delivered (and assembled) that obviously is still in the shipping crate and has forked headlights. I'll leave it to the watchers to hold...

I'm thinking about using a nonmetallic cable for my AC brakes. I have the original set up and I am concerned the fragile appearing equalizer is not up to the stiffness of a steel or even an aluminum cable. The original equalizer is pictued with rust next to Dan Mc Eachern's set up.Thoughts appreciated.

I'm glad to you are using the original set up rather than the incorrect rods. The cable available today is better than anything back than. I got my 3/16 cable from McMaster Carr for my Rocky Mountains. I'm not sure if that is the correct diameter for AC's.

Hi All,
I would like to hear from people as to how to accurately measure the float level. I've read everything I can find and was wondering:
Do you measure the 1/4 inch from: A. the machined lip of the carb body (where the bowl gasket would sit), or B. from the edge of the casting at the corner?
Seems that there is the difference of the thickness...
Last post
A round drill bit won’t work. You must measure from the flange and a bit will not seat on the narrow, recessed flange. The best way is to make a rigid paper measure that will seat on the narrow flange surface. If you don’t measure from the flange, your measurement will be about 1/32” too wide, meaning the float will not close the valve, stopping...

Your tie rod should not be springy. It's probably bent, or has been bent, or is rusty, inside or out, or has been in a fire. I'd look for another one, rather than tempt fate.
A bent or otherwise weakened tie rod may give way if you hit a pot hole.
A straight tie rod is very strong in compression. A bent one is much weaker.

A thought occurred to me while pondering laced wire wheels, that while there are new beaded edge rims available, would aluminium be a reasonable choice to make them from?
We always plate original rims with a silver cad finish as they used to be, but anodised alloy would arguably be an even longer lasting finish, assuming you don't...
Last post
I realise that aluminium is softer but there are some with high temper and the surface finish is certainly harder after anodising, in fact it's positively slippery compared to mill finish aluminium.
There are lots of modern 3 piece racing wheels that use aluminium rims, obviously because they're light weight. I've never put a calliper on them to...

yes, he did, but his solution now relies on the brake shoe return springs (alone) to not only collapse the shoes but additionally now must drive the actuator cam to zero since the brake rods will no longer do it. They made a change in 1915 that I like, and doesn't appear above I think. The 1915 still has the short spout like a 1913, but allows us to use a modern camshaft seal. The longer spout came about 1917, which allows the owner to pour in oil at a faster rate.

This note to alert the passing last week of Ken Nye of Mills River/Etowah, North Carolina. Ken came late to Model T’s after an earlier life as Army helicopter crew chief, then helicopter mechanic. Ken never got his Model T to fly, but he and wife, Jenni, toured extensively in their 1923 touring car with the deer antler radiator cap. He was always...

Always a load of opinions here, so a load of options. Might as well submit mine. Been running 90 (maybe 90 only for the first few years) or 140 for at least 40 years and 600 for the last 27 or so years. Lots of miles, no Ruckstell problems.

Brass Step Plates

I know I'm going to get a lot of flap on this, but brass step plates irritate me! First of all Ford never ever offered step plates. Second, step plates were not used on anything for any car until around 1915. And lastly, I couldn't bear to drill the holes in my nice original running boards! Running boards were meant to be stepped on. Perhaps the...

I had the running boards on both our T's powder coated gloss black, which provides a very durable and scratch resistant surface on something that gets stepped on every time we get in and out of a Model T. That being said, I do also have a brass step on the passenger side running board of our 15 runabout. It goes well with the unpainted, varnished...

I am getting ready to buy new tires for my TT and I want to know what tires are recommended. It has gum dipped 4 ply Firestone 33x5 Tires. They seem to have been brand new when the car was stored but unfortunately they
Dry rotted. What are some comparable 33x5 tires out there because I don’t believe Firestone produces this tire anymore....
Last post
I run these rear tires on my 1924 Model TT Truck. They have been doing well for four years and 200 miles. They still look brand new. I like the tread and side wall design better than the Firestone one and they are cheaper in price.

It is generally agreed (at least amongst us northerners) that a 50-50 mix of water and ethylene glycol is the optimum cooling mix - both for cooling and freeze protection and to protect against corrosion. What got me thinking is the fact that such a mixture behaves a little differently in a unpressurized system like our Model T's. Maybe I'm wrong,...

Although I am coming to Luray this year, I don't have enough parts to sell to justify buying a space, and I was wondering if a vendor at luray would be willing to sell me a small portion of their space so I can put a four foot table in it? Should have posted this alot earlier, just plumb forgot with all the preparations for the trip.

Does this look right? I’m used to working on non-swivel Holley NH carburetors. I pieced together the choke/mixture parts and the u-joint seems to be at too sharp of an angle and binds pretty bad. Also, the nut on the top of the carb doesn’t snug down on the mixture needle like on an earlier carb. Are you supposed to crimp the sides of the needle...

Look at the factory photo closely, and note the choke wire is offset at the bottom.

The side of my rear radius rod at the manufacturing seam (1925) is opening slightly near the fork. Is this sn issue that needs corrected? If so, what do I do to fix it?
Last post
I’m replacing the rods on the ‘25 I bought because someone ran it with nuts loose and not only wore off threads but wore away half the metal. The rods I purchased online have good threads but of course they are easy to observe the seam opening.

I have followed the instructions in the green transmission book (pg 32)....

If not, you have a problem with the clutch fingers inside the transmission or the length of the rod between the bottom of the pedal and the clutch lever at the side of the transmission. Possibly dragging bands.
If it is free with the pedal half way...
