Only about an 80 mile tour last summer with my local club. It was, however, the first time I’d really “soloed,” other than a few short test drives to get the feel of my car which I’d recently purchased. My goals were pretty simple: To have a good time, not crash my car or worse yet crash into other club members. We were pretty well bunched up at...

I've been looking, without success, for the compression boost from the domed pistons offered by the vendors. From stock 4 to 1 to ???
Anyone know or have a feel for it?

Last post
If you run the numbers… adding the A crank with its extra 1/4” of stroke to a 4:1 compression engine will only bump the compression ratio to 4.25:1. Unfortunately, at these low compression ratios it requires a lot of volume displacement to increase compression ratio. No doubt the high dome piston displaces a noticeable amount of volume, but likely...

Model T vs Model A

Model T Ron » Thu Feb 02, 2023 10:29 pm
First post
I have both and on paper the A wins hands down.....it's faster, holds the road better, bigger etc. etc. That said I find much more joy in driving my Model T. For me I think it's the simplicity, history, and the fun to drive 2 speed. Do not get me wrong I love my A as well but if I could only keep one the T would be the keeper.
Why do you love...
Last post
I have a 16 Runabout and a 30 pickup. I enjoy them both for different reasons, but the T was my first old car and I drive it most every weekend. If I had to choose I'd sell the A, cause I truly love my T. There's just something about these early cars that's in my blood.

Dealer question

Hello,
I have a 1921 coupe that came with a rear tire cover that said: Another Ford sold by F.P. Behlow
Watersmeet, Mich. Has anyone ever heard of an F.P. Behlow or have any knowledge of a ford dealership in watersmeel. It is pretty far up north, Ive been there once just to get a sign picture but there was no sort of historical society to ask.
Last post
So it wasn’t custom, benson ford had one mention of a waterskiet dealership in their archives. The only mention of the dealership is from the 1924 ledger and reads “canceled 8/18/1925. Dealer's request. Unable to finance. Unfair practices.” This was in reference to Mr. Behlows watersmeet dealership as well so everything seems to line up.

Keith McG,
I don't recognize the big car either, but I do like it! And the T is clearly a 1914 style, which was actually manufactured for well over a year and a half! Due to weakness in the 1913 style, they began production by July of 1913. And then due to production delays of the new 1915 style front cowl, continued clear into April of 1915!

Yeah, I thought about that just a few minutes ago. Works with laminate, but surely not with tempered glass! You could go the route of cutting new glass and if you think 1/8 less in width might do it, then go with that. If that turns out to be too much you can shim behind the felt channels to get it just right. As I said earlier, I spent a lot of...

If it is the six speed version, actually a three speed progressive shift, be very careful. Do not try to force it because you can't!

The term station wagon pre-dates the automobile so it actually did not start with the Model T. Same goes for depot hackney AKA depot hack and I also presume for estate wagon.
Automobile manufactures such as Woods and Pope-Waverley produced models to which they referred as station wagons, long before the appearance of any Model T equipped with a...

They describe it as a current regulator . That suggests a choke , or inductor, which can be used to regulate mag output at higher engine speeds. I don't know why it would matter how it was mounted, unless it was oil-filled, which it may very well be. Another possibility is that it is a capacitor, which could accomplish a similar function. It could...

Just curious what the advantages/disadvantages to the two types of OF carbs, one with fuel inlet at the top and one with it at the bottom? I know the top fill was the older style.

The upper inlet version dumps into a well which contains what is in essence a labyrinth assembly whereby sediment settles out and clean(er) fuel at the top of the well is allowed to flow in to the bowl. Fuel flow is very slightly but not terribly restricted with this arrangement. Unscrewing the cap on this well allows the operator to withdraw the...

Upholstery Nails

This post is only for dye hard T guys. I've been searching for years for original 9/16 upholstery nails, and have not been successful. They only used these on the end of the binding on early cars possibly until they started using hidem welt. I was using 7/16 until recently. The rest of them are 3/8 .
I sort of scored recently by finding some 1/2...
Last post
5/8 look fine to my eyes.
Compare the photos I posted in the other thread of the 1917 Rip Van Winkle touring and my dad's 1917 touring with the 5/8 nails at the end of the binding, June and July cars respectively, both originally sold in Minnesota and, I presume, both assembled in Minneapolis.

I plan to fire up the oscilloscope and the capacitor meter to check the coils. The points have just been cleaned with a file. I prefer filing rather than sandpapering the points. I recently bought a 1923 T. The wiring is terrible. I have looked at the catalog and have seen the wiring kits for the headlight. I don't see if there is a cover or grommet or rubber piece that goes from the wiring to the headlight. Is there a separate piece? Also, does the kit come with one side or do I need to order two to do both lights? Thanks...

It looks useful, but did it actually work? I would think NOT to use this when the engine is running as the little ball would be a blur to see I guess.
But could be a bonus when turning over slowly as that would show both TDC and spark firing in one tool.

There have been several fancy doodads to set timing over the past 100 years. Currently Lang's sells one that even lights up (for $87). They are all less accurate than going by the pin position, which has the advantage of costing the perfect price — nothing.

What would be causing excessive play in the steering of my 1920 Roadster?
It's rarely caused by just one thing. More often it's a combination of several small problems that add up to one big one (worn bushings, gears, pitman arm ball, etc.). Look everywhere in the steering system.

Also the front camshaft journal and thrust face also needs to be touched up by

Can anyone tell me what the original length was so that I can determine what
the new reworked length would be ?
Thank You
John
Last post
If your cam has been reground, chances are there is no heel left, check it. If that is the case you will need to install a thrust kit.
What can happen is the lobe can drop into the notch without the thrust kit that is installed between the cover and timing gear.

These are 21” Universal brand. I do not have a speedometer so the mileage on this set of tires is a geusstimation.
Anybody out there have a similar car with accurate mileage on a set of compatible tires?

No terribly practical, but, the fronts can be turned around to pick up the lesser worn side created by the camber.
I am sure this would have been done in the depression era to get those last miles from tires.

I think I am going to stay with the stock cast iron head but does anyone make a cast iron high compression head for the T?

and here:
they were made in the same time frame as the T for both T cars and some industrial engine/agricultural uses

Here’s a T center door going down a San Francisco hill around 21-22. It looks like the gas lever is all the way up. Was he coasting and using any braking or?? It looks like the T is new or close to it.

Lombard street runs pne way from west to east starting at the high end. Looking at the shadow, I think the photo was taken in the morning, which makes sense for taking a picture of a black car.

front spring positioning

Hi all,
I took my front springs apart and marked each one on the front. How important is it to replace the spring exactly as they were when all together? Would there be any benefit to put every other one backwards? Or, put the pack in the same order but all facing backwards as opposed to the original way? Thanks in advance.
John

Yes, rounding the bottom edge is PART of the fix as it reduces the amount of reintroduced wear. Unfortunately, under full flex, you are still crashing over the edges left on the tops of the leaf if they are not removed, and thus are not enjoying the best ride the car can potentially give.
I offer this bit of extra information for anyone...

I'm looking for an email for Wayne Atkinson of Idaho (as of 1996). More specifically, I am looking for him to see if he has a clearer copy of the 1996 January article he wrote for New Secrets Magazine . My only copy is blurry... It's the one about air flow in various T parts.

Tim,
Here's what you're looking for. I have some copies printed up in my file cabinet. If this looks to be clearer than what you have (it is a bit clearer full size) I'd be happy to mail a couple to you. You can call me at (818) 321-5360 or email me your address at planetaryman@msn.com.

I suspect that dealers, not only Ford, took those pictures to boast about their product's durability. College kids sought how many souls they could crowd on a car much like stuffing a phone booth. Others just wanted to get a whole gang on the New Car .

There are many of them out there.

The foot operated rills were a beautifully made piece of equipment. A friend converted one to drive a home made spinning wheel. You could kick it into action and the balance would allow it to run for a couple of minutes as it slowly wound down. Ordinarilly, the fibre is fed into the spindle orifice directly in front of the operator. His dental...

1923 Oklahoma City fire dept. T?

Here’s a photo of the entire Oklahoma fire dept. That’s what it says on the photo anyway. I don’t see a T in the Fire dept cars or trucks. Maybe they didn’t want one.
But there is one T in the photo. Maybe 2 ? Maybe the city wanted a better car? Interesting!

WOW! That's an impressive line-up.
I do see 3 White Model 20s in the front row. They were very popular for Fire Trucks.
It's fun to see all those.
Thanks

I am working on my 24 Touring and having done a rebuild on engine with a neoprene crank seal, I still see a drip under the front of engine. So I thought to add an additional external seal and want to know if anyone else has done this using an aluminum belt pulley and your technique in doing this. Your thoughts are appreciated!
Last post
I would never install an engine or radiator without adding a modern oil seal to the outside of the crankshaft! The problem with a small oil drip at the front of the engine is that if you drive your car much that little drip blows back underneath and covers Everything and sooner or later you have a real mess. Montana 500 winner Garrett Green told...

With the HH off, as shown & the magnets already removed, It would be possible to add slingers as she sits.
If you were going to run with a dizzy, fine.
If you want to run coils, the motor will run much better on mag over a 6V battery.

A couple years ago I bought a T that had a set of Firestone Polonium spark plugs in it. They seemed to work fine but I eventually replaced them and put them up in a cabinet. I came across them the other day and was curious to know if anyone knew much about them. Are they a better plug by being radioactive or was it just a gimmick?

I am certain the package shelf can be removed to give more leg room. From the photos I have seen this would involve moving the gas tank back along with the seat riser and then reconstructing the seat back support. I know its not a project for everyone but at 6'3'' its worth the effort to get an additional 4 inches or so.
Any photos of the seats...

Thanks. I do plan on mocking everything up to insure it fits right before reassembly. As long as the body is the same length on the 24 and pre 24 Coupe it's not going to be an issue.

The chapter that this picture came from followed a wounded 'Tommy' from when he was hurt stage by stage through until he reached England. A very interesting description of the process. As such much of the detail was not given as to locations, just generic areas (i.e. 'the Somme').
Transport went from being carried by mates, stretchered,...

I haven't been around many Chalmers cars. I did see this 1913 in 1968 and was able to identify a chassis a friend had by the footman loop on the front fender. They seemed like mighty fine cars.
