Fast and rapid are relative terms. A horse pulling a wagon at 8 mph or a TT truck at 15 mph? Which one is faster?
Most people today think a model T is so very slow. However to people that grew up when the the horse was the most common mode of local transportation, a model T was like lightning fast!

Engine casting date

Did Ford Motor Company continue to date the engine block casting until the end of the Model T production, or did they cease dating the blocks earlier?
Last post
I understand that Canadian cast engine blocks continued having the casting dates on them until about the end of model T production there. I don't know that for absolute certainty, however that is what has been said in past discussions.
One of the model Ts I used to have had an American two valve cover block with a 1921 casting date on it.

Hi,
I tried for awhile (when I got the time) to try to start a 21 engine. It won't start. I had the coils rebuilt properly, I rebuilt the Holley NH, the starter slowly cranks over the engine, but it still won't start. I took each plug out and looked inside and all looks very clean with possibly replacement valves. I did a compression test and...

This is the reason I like having an auxiliary transmission on my TT. I can get a true neutral every time with an auxiliary transmission which eliminated the sticky clutch problem. Either way, I’m sure to chock the front wheels every time I start it, just to be sure.

Most of you are aware of sub-standard parts, but this one is important. I'm trying to help a new member with an original 1915. He needs the correct axle housing caps for the car, and they are not available. I think that is disgusting with the number of pre 1919 T's on the road today. I don't want to hear any crap about shimming them up either!
Last post
Be careful when checking original unused caps if they are the early version or later version.
Ford did make some of the earlier smaller diameter caps with with the flange on them.
The ID of the caps should be 2.382-2.384 on the earlier smaller caps if NOS and 2.429-2.431 on the later NOS larger caps.
We have a few pairs of NOS smaller diameter...

A new, modern cam with the Ford stock grind would be ideal for a stock T in general service, especially in one of the heavier cars. The more aggressive grinds do well in the lighter cars and in cars driven often at higher speeds.
Did the T and TT use the same cam grind?

Lewis Rector did much the same to eliminate bearing shell movement in the block. He made tapered cam set screws for the first and second bearings so they entered the alignment holes and pressed against the bearing shells to hold them tight. I never tried it myself.

The cover may not go on any further. It is likely locked down on the gear shaft. The test is to remove the steering shaft & see if it goes down further. I believe you will find it will. The extra material would be properly removed from the gear case side. Not my first rodeo.

I'm sure yall are used to this but i was flabbergasted. There are 35 patches on the tube inside the spare tire of my 24 Coupe. I would patch it but there was a fold that the last repair job failed to unwrinkle and it caused a long leak that i just dont want to trust with a patch. That tube has some history though. All the patches were probably fixing paper cuts ! (Just Kidding)
I’ve probably changed close to 200 T tires and never seen paper for a rim flap. Next to the regular, modern high-quality tapered rubber flaps most of us have seen, canvas and a felt type material seem to be the most widely used back in the day.

Scott,
I clearly understand what you are saying. Today I will take a spare hub to a shop & make bushings to fit both the inner & outer races. With that the hub stays centered nicely. Also will not hold the felloe in place with bolts as it will center itself when pressing. I think I’m on the right track now.

Has two coiled wire towers and an Eisemann brass tag. Is anyone here familiar with this item? Please educate me on it's use.
Last post
The bare necessity for Ford magnets is to hold at least two pounds, the traditional test being a cast iron Ford piston. If you try this charger and find that the magnets will hold three or more pounds, that's great. Use it. If it charges them only enough to hold a couple of pounds, I'd make a better one. Mine gets 4 to 4½ pounds.

The size, the latch and the inscription painted on that door makes it likely a rear door to a closed panel bodied truck the size for a Model T.

Tighten the lug nuts in a criss-cross pattern in 3 or 4 stages. Be sure all parts are clean and in good condition. Drive the car for 10 miles or so, then re-check all the lug nuts and snug them up if needed using the same pattern.

I had a younger member of our T club come out to my place yesterday to have some new tyres fitted. I had volunteered to show him how I do the job.
He came out with 4 beautifully prepared rims, and a 5th with an older tyre still fitted, and a set of 5 new Blockley 30 x 3.5 clinchers and tubes. The tubes were already fitted in the tyres and the...

You know, I've always thought that if tires originally were as difficult to mount as the standard crop we now use, that horses would have prevailed in the end.
Nice to hear that Blockleys are more pliable and easier to mount than standard black tires (white tires aren't so bad).

Looks like it most likely is a O.E.M. part. I thought it might be a after market because it doesn't look like it has any wear to speak of.

Calling Brass Era experts! Need information on 1912 Touring

What information can you derive from the body number on a 1912 touring? There is no motor with the car, no data tag and I am not sure if there is a frame number. The body number is plainly visible. It is a Fore-Door slab side Model.
It is stamped:
F.B. Co. 41123
Does that mean Fisher Body Company ?
Thanks!
Last post
I would hazard a guess that is correct. The body makers couldn't probably care less of keeping THEIR numbers in sync with Ford's serial numbers which as we all know are also the number on the engine block, and were used to date the car. Ford quit using body numbers about mid 1915. In Dec. of 1925 motor numbers did start to appear on frames.

Rear engine mount bolt tightness

by
Reno Speedster » Tue Apr 18, 2023 10:46 pm
First post
I know the bolts for the rear engine mounts should not be tight. I read the rod manual and it’s a bit unclear. I think the bolts that go through the side of the frame should be finger tight. I can’t tell from the language in the manual if the bolts through the top of the mount and frame should also be finger tight.
Last post
I add just a smidgeon of tension on the side bolts to capture the wood blocks. Then I tighten the top bolts in the normal manner.

The 20-0-20 range, Ford script face plate, flat bezel and dark background behind the pointer appear to be an original . Assumed it will fit a 1-5/8 hole. I'm a little uncertain about case because of the indented bar on the back & that the bezel appears to be a bit loose around it, should be a toght fit unless the bezel has some splits (need to...

This early 1912 car clock has Reliable on the face, but there seems to be no information on whether that is the model of this clock or the name of the company that made the clock.
While I have been repairing clock for over 60 years, I have never seen one like it.
I am still wondering if it is worth repairing.
Does anyone have one in good...

Trying to put together my 27 coupe and looks like all my dash screws and swing arm bracket screws are all 12-24. Just about all those screws were also used in the Early Model A Fords.
If I had lots of time, I would make a cross reference of all the 1926-1927 parts used on the Model A Fords.
One is the little handle that turns off the gas to the carb is no longer available, but the handle used on the early Model As can be used, if you cut off the finger on...

What about the tie rod fails? Is it because the tube is hollow? or old ? or?

Help identifying parts

I found some lights that aren't T, and I'm hoping someone can identify them.
The bullet lights are approximately 8-5/8 diameter at the rim where the bezel would go.
The drum light body is approximately 8 , and 8-1/2 at the outside of the front lip and band.
Many thanks!!!!

Quality of castings makes a big difference on just how far one can push their luck and maybe get away with it? I think you have an NH float. They are the same size as the L4 float but the hinge is taller from the top of the float to the pivot point. The Briggs float is fitted to an L4, An original L4 float will fit an L2 but it is smaller diameter. An original L2 float and float hinge are available reproduction for less than $40 total.
