Budget Spring Shackles

I am helping an 87 year old new model T owner get his car drivable. Yesterday it was new front axle spring shackles and bushings. All he could get were these new low budget shackles made from studs pressed into a steel plate. What a piece of crap. I went ahead and used them since that is what he had, but there is no way these are going to last....
Last post
Looking online at hotrod suppliers, the shackles they sell look the same as the ones pictured above but use nylon or urethane
bushings. The hotrod guys don't seem to have any issues with them. Of course they only run blown V8's. Where was the ones
in question purchased from? Hope not from any regular suppliers. Maybe the fore mentioned trailer...

Big Timing Gear

Can anybody identify the metal timing gear pictured? The number on it is: T415B and looks to be in pretty good condition. I can't locate any reference to that number.
Given the choice, would you install the used metal one of the new nylon one?
R/ Roger.

I suspect that timing gears in 4 cylinder engines tend to be noisier than those in 6 or 8 cylinder engines, since they are less uniformly driven and loaded. I'd also think that a Model T Ford's low speed 4 cylinder engine, which has no cam-driven oil pump, would tend to have especially noisy timing gears. Lack of a harmonic balancer might further...

In the 10+ years I have been refurbishing HCCT meters I have accumulated a lot of parts.
One version of the Allen HCCT has a small Ammeter and Voltmeter.
They are normally all steel (see last photo).
In my box of donor meters were some with brass rings.
So I decided to assemble a set of brass meters.
No Allen HCCT ever came with brass meters.

Is Anyone Still Using the Riveted ‘Ears’ 1 Piece Tranny Bands?

Just curious...Back ‘in the day’ the Scandinavian Band lining was a little better than the belt I wore in the army. Now we have Kevlar and wood that most T owners seem to use. I researched a Forum post of September 2014 where Trent Boggess advises against the detachable ‘ear’ bands with aluminum tranny covers. With better band material nowadays...

I still use the solid bands with kevlar linings. I figure that by the time the linings need replacing, the engine will need to come out anyway.

I was recently told that Ford was making an anniversery new model T in 2003 and it was all new, and there were 200 made before the NTSB shut it down due to modern safety standards. Is this true or just hog wash?

It sounds like that 4 of the cars are at Greenfield Village giving rides, and 2 of them are at museums. One may be overseas.
I wonder if they made more engine parts, like the transmission drums for sale. I heard that they seem to function better than the old ones... :?:

You should be able to split the later size felt in half with a new razor blade and pack one of the halves in. Saturate the felt with oil before you install the cover. It should help to make a cone out of .003” shim stock & place over the cam nut...

About those bugs: powder-post beetles, termites, other wood borers, and carpenter bees as well will get into almost any hardwood. On interior wood, such as a car body that doesn't stay outside, they can be permanently and entirely safely eliminated by mixing sodium octoborate with polyethylene glycol (note, not ethylene glycol... car antifreeze)....

Are the balls in the 5 ball carb all the same weight? We have a large 5 ball on our racer and it runs rough. Not sure if it’s due to the carb, or can timing, or a combination of factors.
Thanks,

The skirts on the inside of the caps should tell you your ball diameter unless they have been cut off. Even if they were, hopefully some sort of tell-tale remains of the diameter of the skirt(s). Of the 5, I'll bet you can cypher out the original ball size from one of them.

A name brand single stage paint makes a nice paint job. Of course surface preparation is 90% of a good paint job no matter what type of paint you use.

Last post
Can one use stock head bolts with p-heads?
Yes, new high head bolts are best IMO, Kevin supplies w/ each P head the proper s.s. thin washers to put under each bolt head. Washers are needed to prevent galling the surface of the aluminum head around the bolt holes. Thin washers of course to allow sufficient depth of the bolt into the block.

I have a 1922 model T touring I have a question
The front passenger door rubs and sticks out at the bottom the fire wall rubs the back of the motor. Does the firewall bracket go on the inside or the outside of the firewall?
Which one goes on the left or right? I bought a new hinge thinking that was it but it did not help any.
Thanks in advance...
Last post
I have aligned the door with a piano wire and a screen door turnbuckle. Pull the door panel off and put the wire between the top corner close to the windshield and the lower right corner . Put the turnbuckle in the middle where it does not contact the wood and snug it up. It will pull the corner back in. The wood has loosened and relaxed.

First post
How tight should these nuts be? Is there recommended torque value?
1) Spring shackle nuts.
2) Nuts on bolts attaching front and rear springs to the frame.
Last post
Spring shackles as an assembly should be 'tight', if they bind on either the spring or perch that issue needs to be corrected in a way that permits full and tight assembly of the shackles. Shackle bolts left loose promote rapid wear of both the shackles and spring/perch bushings. jb

Buy a wood dowel (Lowe's) and use it to measure it with the steering column and steering bracket attached - from the inside of the case to the end o f the steering bracket and then add for the thickness of the head and stub end.

I was reading some old posts from years ago, and wondered, what ever became of Fast Frank Harris ? He was a common fixture on here, kinda faded away after his racing pal Humble Howard Genrich passed away.

let me inject this into your topic: if you have a later engine with a FORD T generator, rather than just hook it to the battery and wait for unanticipated events and troubleshooting to transpire, consider proactively taking the generator to someone with a run-in stand to test for...function (does it even work?) set output to 4A to be kind to...

I have a set of almost new Firestones clinchers that have been mounted for
10 to 15 years. They came on a chassis I purchased a couple years back.
I demounted two so far and the rubber is hard.
I am familiar with heating to soften them enough to mount and demount.
Wintergreen and alcohol seems to work on smaller pieces as well.
Has anyone tried...

I would suggest that if you want to continue to drive on those tires, that you leave them on and keep the pressure to about 60 psi. I had an old one which I kept for the spare and bought new ones made in Viet Nam. The rubber valve stem on my old spare blew up like a balloon, so I replaced the inner tube. It was a very hard job, but with several...

I fill mine with red grease - I put at least a couple thousand miles on a year and if I check it once a year the grease I put in the year before is mostly gone. Not on my pants but maybe down the shaft. My vote...grease it good.

He agreed and I sent him off with two axles and some other stuff to even out the deal. be back in a week with your part . He took the payment and the axles and vanished. Fast forward a few...
Last post
To clarify what Chad wrote above- this is a problem only when the axle is used with a suicide front end arrangement - when the front spring mount is moved upward to create the drop- this method drops the centerline of the crankshaft to where it intersects a stock height front axle, which causes the hand crank to hit the axle. The purpose of the...

Working on my latest purchase. The demountable wheels have a “detent” where the rim “loop” bolts. Is this a hays wheel? The hays rims seem to have a larger “foot” where at bolt. I have several rims that are a little different that seem to fit. Trying to figure out if these are hays wheels, should use Hays rims, how many different types of 30 x 3.5...
Last post
Mike, I believe the rims wedge on one of the rolled edges only. Felloes to take lugged rims like your Hayes rims have a wider land rolled outwards on the inner edge of the felloe. The rim should wedge on that rolled edge, the four wheel bolts maintaining that wedge effect. It is this rolled land to which Scott refers. If it has been damaged, by...

It does not appear to fit a stock coil box switch in any way, but it does appear to fit the stock keyhole with the notches some how?
It has a patent date of 10 15 18 on it.
Any idea what it is?...Does anyone have a need for it?...I would like to get rid of it....
