Laminated Top Bows Broke Again.

BE_ZERO_BE » Mon Oct 10, 2022 7:34 pm
First post
When I restored my '16 Touring in 2008 I installed a new top, new sockets and new laminated top bows.
In about 2012 one side of the rear bow broke right at the socket.
At that time I repaired it by inserting a 1/4 stainless steel rod between the bow and socket.
The rod penetrated about 3 - 4 into each side.
It has held up well.
While doing work...
Last post
While cleaning up the shop I ran across the pieces of the top bows that I trimmed off.
As you can see they were laminated from nine layers of very thin plywood.

I found this steering wheel assembly in a bone yard, does anyone know what it will fit? What it is worth? Anyone interested in it? It has been outside in the weather for years, do not know how long. It is a little over 4' long and a 17 steering wheel and wires coming out the bottom. It is located near Pittsburgh, PA.
Last post
Light switch looks stock to me. The switches often filled with grease and became touchy . The column assembly is rebuildable, and may only need cleaning and rewiring. Parts are available.

After seeing her observation about the Model T I’m not to sure she is being serious about it. This may be called negative humor by some folks or as Steve Jelf reminds us in his post.
But we do have to remember there are folks on you tube who promote themselves. This is one of them.

Finally yesterday I saw the results I've been hoping for! I bought another new alternator (I haven't been able to get the other one back - long story) and put it on.....but first, someone suggested that I should run a ground wire to the engine. The car came to me with a ground wire from the starter to the body frame. The car always started fine....
Last post
Where did you get the new alternator, supplier & brand? There was a question about engine RPM speed for the previous alternator to generate power.
This one came from Snyder's. I believe it's a GM Delco.

Alternating half-turns on the centre C-clamps pulled the eyes smoothly into slip-fit...

Gas lines supplied by Ford were brass. I've had NOS examples, and good used ones also. They are plated. My question is what is the plating? Is it tin or zinc, or something else?
Last post
Any tubing made up from a flat sheet of brass would require tinning and soldering. Steel tubing, seamless or rolled, would benefit from corrosion protection offered by tinning. I'd think a soldered, seamed tube would be very prone to seam failure from flexing and vibration, but apparently that was not the case.

It can, however, be deceiving, sometimes they will run at idle or level, but will misfire when pulling, because the compression is higher when the throttle is open, which it is on a pull. So that one is even a bit harder to find.

I am not sure, but this arrangement might result in a reverse gear. I wonder what the gear ratio is

Engineering Rationale for 30X3 on Front and 30X3 1/2" on Rear

Just curious, can anyone explain the rationale that Ford engineers used for the different wheel/tire sizes on the Model T, specifically 30X3 on the front and 30X3 1/2 on the rear? I took some quick tape measure measurements of the wheels without tires, and the front wheel is about 1 larger in diameter than the rear wheel (on a 1912 that is in my...

This is by far the hardest drawing I have yet to draw. The problem is that in other Model T's components were pretty much bolt on and them slap on the next assembly. Not so with 26-27 the Improved Cars , some thing in them are integral to the construction of the car...like the fuel tank. It doesn't sit on the chassis, like all the previous cars...

Sorry if someone has already pointed this out, but the Fordor has a shorter scuttle to provide more interior space. Hence no room for a tank there.

I'm about to install the cowl lacing on my 27 model T cowl ,and was wondering which way the brass rivets would be installed. The rivets are two prongs that go through the lacing. Are they installed from the outside or the inside of the cowl?
Last post
With the tank out, the rivets can be installed tangs out in the webbing as the factory fitted it, BUT, the two lowest on the sides will need different treatment because the rivets there cannot be inserted due to a double panel precluding same. Was the second panel fitted after the webbing? Most restorers resort to pop rivets at this location....

Thanks guys. I think the racer motor weight is more. Aluminum crankcase but 300 cu in cylinder jug area make it heavier. Going with a T flywheel should make it similar but a little heavier. Now to see if it will fit in a smaller trailer. The frame is 2” longer than standard.

I agree with Steve. They are likely Hayes rims. The relief in the felloe will take the Hayes rims with the foot on the lug. However, this means they can also take other brand rims with fixed lugs, so any fixed lug rim will suit.

For anyone going to Hershey, and sees the truck, I would appreciate some square-on photos from the front, sides and rear to scale up some drawings. Any...

Depending on how far it is and how soft the bottom is, and how far from shore they might be able to drive the first one out but need to keep the carburetor from drawing water. If it will start. The second one will defanatly need help to get it out. No cell phone in those days, so they will have to walk. Hopefully not very far.

Bulb horn repair part 2

Good day everyone
After reading the previous bulb horn posts, it’s clear that I need someone to repair my horn.
Can anyone recommend someone that can repair my 1911 bulb horn?
Last post
The inside diameter of any replacement hose would affect the operation of the horn. An ID close to the original would be best. If a larger ID hose, or a longer one, is used, a larger bulb would probably compensate.

Steve. Sounds like you have a mixture of parts. Which brand are you trying to put together? Any of the four major brands would just use the truck rear end for a TT. A Ruckstell is not needed but of course would be desired. The geared Snowflyer hubs were only sold for T rear ends and later Model A's. The buggy springs and wood top skis sound like...

Hers is really clear early 30’s? Houston Tx downtown street scene. This is at the time of the depression and not many older Model T’s that I can see. The detail is really clear. Better than most I think. I see a 25 Coupe maybe.
Might be no later than 1930. If you like detail this is it considering the camera quality at the time.

Here is a early Dallas Texas parade with very early pre 1915 or earlier auto’s. Looks like a 09 T and early Autos’s. The way it looks it’s the cars that were the center of attention. With all the horse drawn carriages and buggy’s that are there the cars were unusual for lots of folks.

Hot sun, I'd guess. I can't tell where that location was, but it looks like there are some sort of spires or conical roof structures in the far distance and slightly to the right of the roadway. The 'Old Dallas County Courthouse has a number of similar structures around the rooftop. It was built in the 1890s. If those are part of it, the street is...

My 1911 touring bulb horn doesn't honk anymore. The bulb is good and I can hear air rushing out when I squeeze it.
I guess it needs a new reed. How do I replace it? Is it soldered or screwed on? Do I have to remove the entire horn or does it just pull apart?

Hi all,
I was inspecting a 1914 Model T I am interested in buying. I took the cover off the hog's head and found rust everywhere. Certainly changes how much I will offer for the car but wondering if this is...

I bought a new brass Model T sediment bowl from one of the vendors to install on my 1912 Flanders 20 (it has a generic round steel replacement gas tank). Lately the car has been sputtering and dying on uphill climbs, so today I went through the carb and fuel system to check for blockages.

How would you all recommend someone to wash a Touring car?
I only want to wash some of the dirt and dust off the car that accumulates from gravel roads, and dust from storage. Are there any certain car soaps or to avoid?
I have seen other threads that mainly say low flow water, and a bucket of soapy water.

I strongly advise against using the silicone head gasket. I have never used one on a Model T, but they are nothing but grief on a Model A which is not all that much different of an engine.

There is a fantasy 1910 T touring on Hemmings auction. I do not see any 1910 parts on this car. The brass is all reproductions. The chasis is much later. The repro fenders are the wrong style. The body is a new build and all wrong. The current bid is $15,000 which is all it might be worth. Take a look and have a good laugh.

I hope the new owner enjoys it. It’s a nice modified T that I’d have no problem owning and driving. My only complaint is that Hemmings should have noted this was a representation of a 1910, made with parts from a variety of years. Somebody paid what they thought it was worth, and that’s their business. I’ve seen interesting A tranny conversions...
