I have read a number of solutions to the problem of extending the fuel shutoff handle from under the car to the outside. For sure the passing of time makes the trip to the ground and to the center of the car further with each birthday and I now find it a quite a chore to make the journey. As a result I often leave the fuel valve on, risking a leak...

It's a rude awakening among the kids I play with as we come to learn there's a minimum level of agility that's necessary in order to drive and maintain a Model T. I suppose at some point we'll all have to hang up our spurs . . . ?

Way to check magneto during engine buildup

Our 1915 runabout had the engine rebuilt in 2019 when I was restoring the car, and it easily starts by hand when set to the magneto. I'm currently in the process of putting back together the engine for the 1911 touring that I am restoring, and I also hope that it starts by hand cranking on the magneto.
Ideally it would be nice to know if the mag...

The magnets will never be any stronger than when first charged. Over time, with use, they will slowly weaken, due to vibration, heat cycling, and perhaps other factors. Bearing thrust faces will wear. The stronger the magnets are initially, the longer they can be expected to provide good service, and the more reliably the car will start under...

Air leaks between valve stems and the guides

Vintage Ford magazine, September/October 2022 issue, page 41 describes how to reduce air leaks between valve stems and the guides: with felt washers are held in place by sheet metal clips. It also says here: they are sold as a complete set. I checked Snyders, Langs and Macs but found nothing. Can someone tell me where I can order this set?

What Year Was This Taken? I would say 1914 or so. The shiny paint suggests the cars are new. Acetylene lights with brass trim would be '13 or '14 on a Ford. Electric lights would be likely in 1915.

Hi. I’d like to know more information about this rim. It is a Ford 2845B style rim made by Kelsey. One lug is marked with a K and Ford script. On the inside, it is stamped No. 188 and has the same Kelsey stampings (name and patent information) as the fellows in this old post. This rim also has a faint stamp that I think is an 8-24 date but it is...

I noticed that, Allan. I don’t know if late felloes were designed to universally accept both footed and non-footed lugs, or if those were modified. I also don’t know if those steel spoke wheels just happen to use Kelsey 188 felloes or if those are fully Kelsey wheels. Is the 188 rim made for the 188-felloed steel spoke wheel? If so, why the Ford...

What am I missing.
Thanks,

I still have those defective cores. Being that they're manufactured as one piece sealed units there has to be a break in between the top terminal and the center contact .
I guess that is the only thing it could be , short of some impurity in the metal having to much resistance ....that is a strange one .

I decided to use new flaps as the ones I'm taking out of the old tires are hard. I think they have been in there since 1974 when the tires were put on. I haven't tried Lang's yet but everyone see to be out of stock. Has anyone bought any lately. My car has 4.40/4.50 21 wood wheels. on a 26 touring.

Unlike the 23” clincher demountable rims, the 21” split demountable rims do not use thin rim liners. I always ran flaps in my 21” chebby disk wheels, the straight side tires don’t protect the tube from the rim, and so the tube is subject to whatever imperfections and movement is present at the rim seam.

Centerdoor with train wreck

This image was supposedly taken in Allenton, WI.
A LOT of cars were damaged here. But, one identifiable car stands out. A Centerdoor.
If you zoom in you can see the roof of the car and that there is a strip of material of a slightly different hue on the sides of the roof. You can also tell that the roof panel is solid.

Really is a fascinating picture!
if you use Control +, you can zoom in and see chassis after chassis lined up in FRONT of the sedan, and one behind the sedan, as well as fenders and all manner of parts piled up. I think most certainly this was a train with disassembled cars enroute to be assembled at an Agent's place.

I have an idea for building a run engine stand that would rotate around the front engine mount using a old engine frame. This would not be ideal for pan/transmission alignment, but more of top and bottom end engine work.
Here are the design requirements I have in mind:
Radiator can be mounted - so it is a true run stand.
Engine can be rotated...

I would strongly suggest finding an industrial grinding shop and have your pan jig reground on a Blanchard type grinder or a large reciprocating surface grinder.

Scott Condor gave you the answer in the second post.
If the cam is new as you suggest then the adjustment is too loose.
You need to see how far the shaft moves sideways to determine if the pedal is working as it should.
If in new condition the pedal shaft can move the band ear one half an inch to the right (if LHD or RHD) but it only needs less...

Here’s a 1919 photo of a food truck. It’s a 1919 but it’s a touring car.
They have it set up pretty neat going by the way they have the food shelves.
The caption under the photo read “food truck” so for some folks that what it was.
I don’t know if that’s an early coffee pot but maybe it was either tea or water.

Not breaking any new ground here, but since the speedster diff was illuminated and clean, the photos show a couple of modifications that make maintenance, and the eventual sale of the car, a bit easier: brass pipe thread drain plug, and brass bronze thrust' ID tag.

Chris, Thanks for posting a great idea!! The tag is a super idea and the drain plug will be very useful someday. I'm not sure who would deduct a point for a little tag?? I like the use of a flush plug even if it needs a hex allen wrench. I use the same style plug on the bottom of my Warford just for safety clearance.

I am in the process of fine tuning some Anderson Timers that I own and I need some dimensions.
Look at the image-
A - I need the distance between the point of contact on the terminals where the flapper strikes the terminal.
B - I need the distance between the point of contact on the terminals and the inner rim of the timer case.
Thanks-...

As I remember Frank Fenton was the guy I bought an Anderson timer from several years ago
at Chickasha. He had a display board set up showing the accuracy of the timing and firing of an Anderson. Seems like he was the first one making a quality reproduction of the Anderson. He was a really knowledgeable guy who would rebuild an original.

Video camera microphones are poor at picking up some sounds, but maybe you can hear the knock. My 1915 runabout ran normally when I shut it off. But the next time I started it there was a definite knock because of some maintenance I did. The fix was simple.

More compression will get you more power across the engine's entire speed range. More cam lift and duration will get you better power at higher engine speeds. A stock or mild performance cam will generally give better low speed power and response.

Model T Braking
As part of our semi-annual mechanical inspection necessary to register the car and use it on the road, the inspector has to test the braking.
A modern version of the 'Tapley Meter' is used. It measures the forces when the brakes are applied using an accelerometer.
Anyway, the minimum reading to 'pass' is 50 (somethings!)...
Last post
... so, since the originator of this thread won't 'fess up ... rumour has it that his Model T actually had better braking than another vehicle he has, despite it (the T) missing vital suspension and exhaust components ;-)
Also, Mr W, apropos our earlier discussion - it's not really how you spell 'really'

At that time I repaired it by inserting a 1/4 stainless steel rod between the bow and socket.
The rod penetrated about 3 - 4 into each side.
