Anyone know Rene Grahmert in Germany?

A few years back, Rene posted that he was looking for a small spiral gear for a Patterson speedometer drive. I have been unable to find him in the MTFCA or MTFCI membership. If anyone knows him or his contact info, I'd like to get in touch.

Good morning all,
I just found a new member of the broken crankshaft cub .
Just wondering why it is broken on this place just behind the first main bearing. Photos in attachment.
Was this just bad luck or are there some item to look for?
I hope not finding any other problems in the engine. It was rebuild in 2022 and have about 300 miles since...

The vast majority were the result of a tight radius on the pins. Next in line were pin failures also, but with good radius yet the crack started in the radius- my conclusion on then was too rough of a stone/stone needed dressing. Lovely car Tom. The spokane build was much lighter grey, so the red highlights really stood out. Were the tyres on yours Insa brand from South America somewhere? We only ever saw that tread pattern on 21 tyres for the later T. While I think I can see a split in right front rim, the proportions of wheel and tyre look more like 23 items.

Ok. Some folks on here are aware I am rebuilding a Centerdoor from a complete body I got from another hobbyist. Said body needed some parts redone wood wise, and those pieces have been completed.
The front pillars align with the cowl, so all good there. (No final assembly yet).

Sediment Bulb Inlet
by

This is total trivia, but I find it interesting. I have several NOS Sediment bulb inlets for the 1912 and later bulbs. The factory number on the sediment bulb is 2088, but the inlet is not listed. I find that interesting in that most of the inlets I've seen are either plugged, or have a hole punched in them.

Patterson Speedometer Drive for Model T
Replies: 4
by
ModelTWoods » Sat Aug 02, 2025 5:15 pm
First post
Unlike the NASH transmission mounted speedometer drive sold for Model T's, which used more than two gears, did the Patterson drive use only two gears, one on the transmission output shaft and one on the end of the cable which was secured to the transmission inspection cover?
Last post
The drive I have has a four start spiral gear and a 10 tooth fibre pinion gear which is well worn. The top right hole in the cover is round as usual. All the others are slotted. I presume this is to allow some sort of mesh adjustment between the spiral gear and the pinion.

In my experience, the mounting to the running board is full width and is bent from the top panel of the fender and has folded edges over an additional strengthening plate, just like the later fenders. How tall is a low radiator shell? I am looking for a low radiator shell. Art

You don't need the height to identify a low shell. If the sides are square the front, it is a low shell. If the sides are flared outwards to the rear, it is a high shell. The height may help if one is not aware of the above.

When building a speedster, every modification is likely to lead work-arounds later in the build. For example, If you use a dropped axle, you will have to consider which spindle arms to use. All it takes is just one time and you’ll find out the hard way why the spark is retarded when hand cranking a T. We have to remember our modern cars and trucks do all the thinking for us when we start and drive them.

The flange on the valve stem and the ridge on the bridge washer make a physicsl connection when the stem is fitted. It should make no difference if the stem looks a little plasticy . All that is needed is some crush. Who knows? Maybe the new stuff won't ever blow off the brass stem tube like it has on tubes in the past.

Okay, I am a newbie, but does anyone have a photo of an installed Holley NH, later model with the universal joint type mixture adjustment on their car? Hi John, I absolutely love the manifold, dual carbs, vaporizer exhaust. What is that casting? Allan with all that going on you noticed the
cutout?
Craig.
Thanks Craig.
The exhaust casting is a mystery part found on tbay.
Fits the hot plate pattern near perfect. no gasket. I speculated it was from a knight sleeve valve motor or tractor.

Very slow cooling after pouring will normalize a casting like an engine block, but that is not compatible with mass production. The T block must have been a pretty good design, since they are not known for cracking except as a result of abuse. Most Model Ts leak more or less oil. One sure way to get one to leak excessively is to put too much oil in the engine. There are a number of inexpensive things that can be done to minimize oil leakage. Often, just snugging up oil pan and valve cover bolts will reduce oil leakage. Most Model Ts can benefit from a general tightening , which consists...

Similar to the Safe-T-Man dummy that was marketed circa late 1980s/early 1990s.
The original idea was women who drove alone could put it in the passenger seat of their car.

Steering Connecting Rod question for those know.

The Ford price list of parts for 1926 list two different part numbers for the Steering Connection Rod. It is the part that connects the pitman arm to the steering yoke rod. Part number 2725B for the years 1909 to 1925, and part number 2725C for the 1926 - 1927 years. What is the difference between these two parts?
Please share your knowledge....

Here is a link to where this subject was covered in some detail. All Model T parts are most certainly not interchangeable and changing steering parts can have pretty nasty consequences if you install the incorrect part.

Great work with the bolt based “rivets”. I do believe that the axle tube will need to be separated from the pumpkin casting to get a decent seal. I guess that before rebuilding the original axle, I’ll disassemble, clean, and bolt-rivet the both axle housings to reduce the chance of future leaks.

I see a couple of different options that don’t require modifying the axle housing. Expensive but seem like an easy install and pretty maintenance free. Thoughts?
Thanks, David

I ran a set of ball bearing replacement cartridges years ago. They were great, slipped right in and didn’t have to grease em. The ones I had required trimming of the axle tube ends, same as safety hubs. After a few years I pulled the rear to build into a Ruckstell, but couldn’t get the bearing cartridges out. After much effort I had found that the...

Do a search for Tiny Tach. I had one on my lawn tractor and it was not affected by the mag. They have an hour meter built in too. It will look totally out of place on a T.

Thanks for that one Herb.
Too bad all five men stood in front of the cars instead of beside them... no one had dreamed that people would be interested in looking at that picture over 100 years later.
Gregory, great job on dialing that photo in.

Came across this video about polishing the brass on a Stanley steam car. Thought there was some interesting tips.

For heavily tarnished brass, use Bar Keepers Friend and then follow-up with your favorite polish. It works extremely fast, even if the brass is brown. Wear nitrile or rubber gloves when using it.
It's inexpensive and available in powder or liquid and you can find it a Walmart and, if you are in the midwest, Menards. However, my opinion is that...

How Does Touring Top Attach to Bows #2 and 3?

My 1916 Touring came with the top in decent condition but not attached to the 2nd and 3rd bows. How should it be attached?
Last post
At road speeds the car will go fine with the top up, but if you put it on a trailer, you should put the top down and if you have a boot, put it on the top when folded down. Especially so if you have a headwind. Don't ask my how I know!

My Lizzie pulled up with a belly-ache the other day, woes with the Holley G I’m running. It’s a brass-body G I rebuilt about 7 years ago, using the available composite foam float available from Lang’s. As usual, it’s never just one thing wrong, found a little crud in the inlet port, and the float valve prospered by “lapping” with toothpaste. When...

Update for anyone interested in this thread. The block of nitrophyl from Kelch Restorations came in today’s post.
FWIW, its appearance is VERY different from the float blank I had obtained from Lang’s. Smooth, black, with a sheen even when cut, it does not resemble the grey, granular texture of the previous material. IMG_2952.jpeg

Compression test. Starter vs crank

Has anyone done a cylinder compression test recording electric starter vs crank psi? I'm losing my strength and find it hard to get over TDC even with the other plugs removed.
Last post
So far, no one has mentioned a “dry test” vs. a “wet test”.
Dry is “as is”, for a wet test, squirt a little oil into the cylinder through the plug hole. Wet/dry variation can tell you something about the condition of your rings. From my experience, a “hold in” gauge is practically useless when checking out a model T.

Number thirteen is a nice 1914 runabout with after-market fenders all around. Several companies made similar fenders to upgrade the outdated style of the Ford car. Most Ford owners were too practical for them sell in large numbers, but occasionally we can see them in era photos. I have seen only a few loose ones and a couple full sets over the...

Hello specialists,
I'm currently restoring a 1917 Ford T Touring by Dunkan and Frazer from Adelaide, Australia. Because I also want to adjust the valves precisely, I removed the cylinder head and both valve covers. I discovered that the tappet outlets were fitted with short plastic sleeves from a plastic hose. What could have been the reason for...

Tire pump question . . .

Like many, I picked up a real Ford tire pump for my Lizzie. I would like it to be functional. Seems to be a good restoration, plunger piston has been replaced with a cup from a hydraulic brake cylinder, it moves air well.
Fitting to attach to the tire stem doesn’t have a point for opening the stem valve. Referring to the Dauntless Geezer’s notes...
Last post
If there is a pin to push the valve core stem down, there has to be a check valve on the pump. Otherwise, as Steve said , what you push in on the downstroke simply comes out again on the upstroke. On the inside end of early valve cores there was an external spring on an extended pin in the centre. Perhaps these are what you need for a hand pump to...

Hi Mike, welcome to the hobby, all the best with the recommissioning.
For a lubrication chart try page 31 of the attached manual. Follow the arrows and you will find the oil flaps and grease caps to use. Unscrew the caps, fill with grease then turn them down. An extra turn or two regularly will add grease as needed, for the oil cup lift the flaps...

I cleaned off the moisture and waited 20 or 30 minutes and noticed that it was...

i would clean the area well and then block off the lower water inlet and hook a shop vacuum to the upper water outlet ... apply vacuum and add either locktite weld porosity filler or simple super glue to the crack ... the vacuum will draw the sealer into the crack and give a very good long term seal ... DO NOT use a combustible cleaner if you are...

The handle on a potato gas shut off valve is broken off and gone. Has anyone tried to attach some type of handle to one?
Also I can not remember what was suggested on how to remove the brass valve.

FYI - not all valve/handle combinations are compatible with all sediment bulbs - I have found several different lengths of tapers.
