Shocking key

Good day everyone
I got my first model T running two days ago. It’s a 1911 with an original coil box. When I turn the key from battery to mag I get a spark plug type shock. Is that normal?
Last post
Mike Coats, are you any closer to discovering the source of the extra electricity.
The spark voltage from the coil is the only voltage that is high enough to provide you a shock.
That high secondary voltage comes out the bottom button of the coil and it is a very short trip from there to either one of your coil primary voltage sources.

Rear Axle Hyatt Bearings - Different Part Numbers for RH and LH Sides

I recently obtained an original copy of the Hyatt Roller bearing catalog covering the period from 1897 - 1916.
In it, Model T Ford axle bearings are listed as part number 16080 for the RH side of the car and 16079 for the LH side.
I wonder why Ford specified different part numbers for the two sides, perhaps the rollers are wound in different...

That makes sense. Maybe we complicate things a little by what we have to deal with when we buy parts to day.

Rebuilding Model T coils

First post
I dont know too much about Model T coils but from what I understand when checking a coil and you find the primary or secondary windings are damaged that the coil is not rebuildable.
I noticed that Snyders and Langs and maybe others sell the secondary and primary windings. Does this mean I can use these to rebuild those non-rebuildable coils ?...
Last post
John; As already stated, you actually can rebuild your old coils....maybe, with a big tarry mess... but there are two guys on this site that do it professionally and either will supply you with a set of rebuilt coils at a very reasonable price that will probably outlast your car, and maybe you as well. No more hoping that your work will pass the...

there are two set screws to hold the fitting to the whistle
four brass tubes
casting holds the tubes
spring loaded to activate
has anyone ever seen one like this?...

I just saw this post. I had a late-28 AA truck back in the 60's that had that exact whistle on it when I bought it. I had to take my head off to check for a blown gasket. After cleaning it up and putting it on, all of the bolts torque to 45 ft lbs (Z head) except for the bolt that held the horn on. I even tried leaving off the horn and the bolt tightens down past finger tight, but beyond that it keeps spinning and never fully tightens up. What can I do?

While you are at it, chase the threads of all the bolt holes and blow out with compressed air. Before doing this, using duct tape, tape over all water jacket holes and cylinder holes to prevent metal shards from going into the holes. Tape over the threaded holes not being cleaned out for the same reason. When installing the head, stagger the...

I've put many a seat in and have never lapped any but it takes experience to know what to look for. .060 width is good for gas motors. Look at the flywheel ring gear! In my opinion the missing insulation is the nat sitting on the trunk of the elephant in the room. The much bigger problem, are the teeth worn so much on the flywheel. And what all that metal in the oil has done to the babbitt. ???

Rubber tipped needles need a small clip that attaches the needle to the float tab. These clips were used on most all oem production carbs. Without the clip viton tipped needles will eventually stick. Sometimes tapping on the bowl with the wood end of a hammer will jar it loose.

It may be that the rather elaborate, gabled structure on the T chassis was never intended for serious road travel. Buses and vans look the way they do for several practical reasons. A house car of any size meant for travel and camping would have required a TT chassis, and would have looked similar to a van/bus.

Norm's latest adventure in What have you done... reminded me of driving down the street in a town two states from home and a couple of guys in the car next to me yelling that water was pouring out of my car. Fortunately the plug was leaking but not lost, and fixing the leak was easy. But if it had fallen out on the street it would have been a real...

I don't know if it was due to years of antifreeze or hot water, but old #2 definitely failed in that application for me.
Choosing among plugs is pretty easy. Steel will rust out, of course, while brass will not. But I think the nickel Norm suggested will last even better than brass. It's also cheaper, if that matters. It's what I use....

I've got a '17 touring with 30x3 1/2 clincher wheels front and back. It got time to replace tires. Not knowing the history on the existing tires, I wanted to go with new tubes, and flaps. Once I peeled off the old tires and tubes I could see the advantage of flaps, as the old tubes had patches and chaffing on the inside (rim contact) area, the...

Hi all, I’m trying to scour the internet for information on what the correct wheels would be for an early 1917 (Feb 1917). My car currently has square felloe and pointed spokes on 3-of-4 wheels, and one of the rears is a rounded felloe with rounded spokes. From best I can tell from Ford archives, square felloe wheels didn’t come in until late...
Last post
Final opinion first. Your square felloe wheel was most likely changed onto the car at some point in the past. I haven't seen anything that makes me believe that square felloes were used before mid to late 1917 model year (maybe about June 1917?). So your February 1917 should have the earlier style.
This is one of those changes that apparently had...

One reason a T collector may have a Chevy 490 front hub is to build a T speedster using Chevy 490 spindles in T axel for lowering plus maybe 490 steering gear. The wheels could be built up with Chevy hubs and Ford rims.

My ‘19 centerdoor is the best touring T of all in my ‘stable’. It wouldn’t be without accessory short 3 leaf springs on all 4 corners. It requires turning front spring perches 180*. And it runs scary fast with Waukesha Ricardo head, straight thru NH and hi volume intake. Maybe the easier to find Hasslers on all 4 corners will do the same ease of...

Here is a random question:
Would anyone, by shear chance, know who bought this 1910 Ford Touring Car at this year’s Long Beach Swap Meet? …I live in the area and would very much like to know who bought it. Because, I bought nearly the identical car, same basic set up, one year ago and have been restoring it “specifically for touring” ever...

I’m about to start the install of my Classtique two man top for my 1910 touring, and I was wondering if someone out there has installed one and has any suggestions. I’m particularly interested in how to install the front and rear leather straps during the install: I’m assuming they go on first, then the bows are tacked into position with the...

I have questions about three items on my 1927 coupe.
1) I want to replace the rubber bumpers for my truck lid. I assume the way to remove the existing bumper is to drill it out.
How difficult is it to insert the new one? Any trick to use to do it?
2) I would like to replace the rubber bumpers that the bottom of the door glass rests on, but it...

Are there any tappets available with an oversized foot (larger diameter) that will fit into a T block? Recall A friend tried A tappets, but i recall a lot of machine work in a space with not a lot of metal and never went any further. Thanks!

Thank you Dan, I will reach out and see if Bill is still making the tappets.
The 292/Y block tappet foot is 1 diameter- pretty much the same as the aftermarket T adjustable tappets. Your cam guy should be able to find a profile that will work with the 1 follower diameter. John is correct, Bill Stipe dis make some large diameter tappets doe use...

I see this model t chapter on the MTFCA list located in Maryland but can’t seem to get ahold of anyone involved in it. I don’t know if anyone here knows if it’s still up and running. They had a website before but I can’t seem to find that either. It’s the only chapter reasonably close to me so any help would be appreciated. Thanks

It looks like they lost part of the load before the wreck. Bales may have been stacked high with a lot of overhang on the sides, and if the load got loose on one side, it could have severely unbalanced the truck.

Few folks are reconstructing a Model T.
How many are checking the Frame Alignment?
I was cleaning out years of collected stuff and the book The Restoration of Antique and Classic Cars, 1957, Wheatley and Morgan dropped on the floor opening to page 30. Chapter on the frame and checking it before a rebuild.
For the benefit of the group I am...

JTT3 -- I tried calling you, but apparently your number has changed. I agree with the others that boxing a T frame would not be a good idea, for the reasons given above. And I agree that over-correcting the sag a bit in the upward direction is a good idea. Use heat and cooling to try to shrink the lower part of the frame rail in that area....

I'm thinking about how to address a couple of issues on a brass windshield. The first is a crack , the second a distorted hole. See photos.
I'm thinking about annealing the cracked area, compressing the housing to restore the contour of the housing and close the crack and silversoldering the crack after Ving it out a tiny bit. I may have to ream...
Last post
Silver solder the crack, heat up the area around the hole, let it cool. Support the bottom and press a long tapered punch into it until you get enough clearance for the bolt to fit.

Had a car making noise and thought I might have a clutch issue but I found this in my magneto. John, I did that, just reassembling now. There was a lot of debris and I’m sure the magneto is done. The car runs on battery powered by an alternator with an old Bosch distributor. This may be a silly suggestion, but have you inspected the carburetor throttle shaft? If it's loose, the hole may be wallowed out and sucking more air than fuel.

When not playing with my 1913 or 1915 Ford's, I'm working on my 1911 Model Q-11 Maxwell. The car is very complete but it underwent an incorrect color restoration in dark green and black, back in the 1950's (It should be light blue). In any event, I have the brass windshield but the long brass support rods are missing. I figured Lang's made...
Last post
Ditto on the brass-over-steel construction of the support rods. One of my rods has a crack in the brass which is a real finger slicer if you're not careful. The rod's not structurally compromised, so we just have learned to be careful. Not sure how to repair it other than to glue it down with some structural epoxy and then posish off any residue....
