Trouble with a Magneto battery charger

Bruce Compton » Sun Jul 31, 2022 2:10 pm
First post
I followed the age-old schematic posted here several times and built a magneto battery charger for my '14 roadster using a 10A10, 1000 volt, 10 amp diode and a 1156 bulb in series. The initial system worked well for a day or so and then overnight I had a totally dead battery (small 12volt AGM). Apparently the diode shorted and allowed the battery...
Last post
Thanks Steve, but my charger lines are nowhere near the high voltage wires. I think I bought a bad batch of 10 amp diodes so I've ordered some 25 amp ones that should survive.

The RF was Stromberg's replacement for the OF. Improvements included a much better float system and an elimination of the runny-nose syndrome that many OF's had. They run stronger and smoother that an OF, BUT removing the brass idle jet is more often than not impossible. I've had maybe 10-12 of these and only able to save 3-4 of them. Stan had...

What is acceptable? I have a 25 coupe and the compression for each cylinder is 38-39 pounds. Engine runs smooth and seems to have enough power for tours. I took the compression in hopes of finding an answer to oil consumption. Have checked all areas for leaks, no drips, rear end for oil seepage passed 4th main, etc.

From this last description, I will bet in a few years it will start to smoke at idle but not while on the road. At that time, you'll be in the market to do a valve job, with oversize valves and that's about it. I'll bet your plugs still run clean, too. You're pretty much describing my nearly all original '19 and I wouldn't dream of doing anything...

Width of Felt Channel for Door Glass

by
BLB27 » Sun Jul 31, 2022 8:45 pm
First post
Are there two sizes of repop felt channels for door glass?? My repop is 5/8 wide. The width of the channel into which the felt channel sets is 9/16 . I think it will be very difficult, if not impossible, to install the repop.
Last post
I was wrong. My retaining channels, for the felt channel, are 5/8 . The repop felt channel is 5/8 , and therefore, it is very tight fit. I which the repops were 9/16 . It would make installation easier. The supplier has told me 9/16 are not available.
Is an adhesive used to bond the felt channel to retainer?

I tried out a NOS set of Rentz Spark Plugs after running new Champion X’s for a long time. They have a longer electrode than the Champions which I assume makes them a hotter plug, so I set the gap a bit bigger on them, between .030 and .035 for the Rentz. The champions I have set at a snug .025

I'd guess the intermittent plugs have a hidden crack or flaw in the insulator or the unglazed end of the insulator may be deeply permeated with carbon or rust. If narrowing the gap on an intermittent plug improved its test performance, that would seem to point to an insulation leak of some kind, such as a hairline crack, rust or carbon...

in case you were wondering, this is how the rear spring clips were mounted on the front spring. all three pieces had stripped threads and the front spring pack had the wrong tie bolt so I assume this was an attempt to keep the spring pack from shifting back and forth.

I believe the original body on my T was a roadster. With the pickup box on it the fenders do not come close to the box. Not sure of the year of the box and I will have to sand on the frame to read the serial #. It is licensed as a 26 but that was because of the motor I had when I applied for a title55 years ago. I was a kid then and did not know...

Believe your fender is a rear 26-27 touring/sedan fender, not made to fit to your pickup. The bed you have is 26-27, just need to find a pair of correct rear fenders, 26-27 roadster/coupe/pickup .

I am replacing the non-original rain gutters on my '26 Coupe with a pair of originals. Right now, there is hid-em around the back of the roof from gutter to gutter. Someone told me that originally there was a curved metal strip around the back, not hid-em. Is this true? Does anyone have some close-up photos of what it is supposed to look like?...

Humblej's drawing is clearly correct but only half the story.
As George says, there is (was) then a cover which slid along to cover the screws.
But this is the gutter along the side, not the front and rear trim. In the UK, the nearest equivalent is still known as 'Hidem Banding'.
This is all good stuff I didn't know, but I have to say that the...

I recently purchased a modern dipstick, Langs 3079DS that replaces the lower petcock. Installation instructions say a slight bend may be needed. It looks to me like it will require way more than a slight bend to get the tube to exit forward of the firewall under the hood. This is on a 19 roadster project. Can someone send me a picture or post one...

Van, for now I can say that it comes up at a slight angle up (very slight), and a slight angle out (again, very slight). The mounting tab generally must be drilled out a little to fit over the firewall bracket bolt. Even though it is angled out everything safely and easily clears the inside of the hood when closed.
The up bend is my decision to...

Could adding a high compression head be expected to improve engine breathing? I'd think a reduced clearance volume would make the engine a more efficient air pump and thus increase power. I'd think a performance cam would work better with a smaller clearance volume as well.

Chrysler is closer than any I can find. I believe it would have had a plated radiator shell, winged cap and cowl lights though. It probably would have had a bumper. So many mid-twenties cars had cowl lights. The bullet headlights were few. That is a long hood. I'm guessing a lesser known make that doesn't pop up in photos as much.
A great puzzle....

First off, I know that those who use the Form are very helpful giving information.
And some time there is no answer. Those who find funny marks on your car are asking what is this?
So here is a place where someone may get an answer about a trade mark on a part of your car.
It may answer a question... it may not be quick...but it may help.

I am putting out a request for some data on stamped Hassler springs. Ford was the first to mechanize the masses with the Model T, leading to it becoming a prime target for all sorts of not-so-OEM gizmos we have come to enjoy collecting and even using. Let's see your machines and all the non-Ford goodies you have installed to make Lizzy suit your needs. About on average how many functional accessories do you use?

I’m waiting on the casting foundry in town to give me a price but would anyone be interested in the accessory windshield stanchion mount with running board plate spare tire carrier? I’ve seen a few of them but even fewer with the running board plate. If my measurements are correct, you’d me able to carry 21”, 30x3 and 30x3.5 tires.

Does anyone know for sure if a '25-'27 steering gear set (5:1) will fit OK in a 1914 steering gear box? I find the original 4:1 a tad too direct at highway speeds (40-45 MPH).
Last post
You might considered staying with the 4:1 gearing, assuming everything from the road to the steering wheel is tight and in good adjustment, and adding a 17 steering wheel and adjusting caster/camber to the best advantage and setting toe-in to slightly favor understeer. Adjusting front/rear tire pressures might also be of benefit. Anything you can...

Replacing the notch replaces half the wear. To complete the job the corresponding working surfaces on the pedal need building back to spec. The pedal needs to come off the shaft, the wear surfaces built up and then the faces worked back into close contact. This refinishing is key to the job. It requires repeated filing, grinding, bluing, refitting...

Does anyone have suggestions and hopefully photos of where and how they attached speedometer cable support straps?
I know Model Ts did not come with straps, but the repros need the support.
The repro cable housings stretch and cause the sliding clutch to disengage. I'm hoping a strap will solve the problem.

I copied a little wire buckle from an old one on Kim Dobbins car. It's only about I square, and hangs from a engine splash pan bolt. From that I have a short leather strap. It's been on my cars for many years.

There used to be a product sold that allowed the insertion of an electric bulb into the oil taillight without any modifications. The device was simply a snap ring with a bulb socket soldered to it, and the ring sat just inside the open lens cover. (Yes, wiring to a power source was necessary).
