the fork is inserted over the clutch pedal shaft and braced on the brake and reverse pedals (on the outside of the hog's head)...it keeps them from flopping or moving around when lowering the hog's head into place

Without some specifics, responses are assuming that your battery box is a standard size Model T 6 volt car battery, GROUP 1 size. (not 12v or a motorcycle)

Looks like a Model A crank. As for bore to stroke ratio, The Model T, at 3 3/4 X 4 is comparable to many modern engines. With the compression limits imposed by low octane fuel and crude combustion chamber design in the early T era, a short stroke engine was not practical. Crankshaft design and other design considerations also limited engine speed,...

Yes, it DOES require some sort of shimming between some of the spokes. I sometimes glue oak veneer on a few of the spokes.
I have a few times also bent sheet steel so that the steel goes between the hub and spoke and then up the side of the spoke. In that way, the steel shim between the spokes CANNOT slip out. A bit of effort, however makes a...

Steering wheel question

Does anyone know how the fordite steering wheels were originally finished? Were they painted, sealed with shellac, or left bare? The wheel in my 23 runabout is pretty faded and leaves a nasty, tacky black mess on my hands when it's humid outside. I want to restore the wheel rim, but I have no idea how it was originally done.
Thank you,

Last post
Later model Fords had the Fordite steering wheels painted. It usually began to wear off fairly quickly, revealing the dull black material underneath. The bare material could absorb dirt and grease from people's hands and get a gummy feel. It might be difficult to get paint to stay on an old wheel rim. I'd try cleaning and polishing, then applying...

My 25 pickup has loose spokes in its 21 inch removable wheels.
my guess is that it is due to our hot dry climate here in Tucson Arizona.
A couple of questions.
Did 25 T's come with 30 X 31/2 clincher wheels ?
If so and I buy a set of 30 X 31/2 rebuilt wheels how can I seal them to prevent loose spokes?

Most 1925 open cars still used 30 X 3 1/2 wheels. Most knowledgeable people use Calimers wheel shop in Pennsylvania.

Our Canadian sourced cars have a built in deflector riveted to the rear end of the muffler. The exhaust is deflected downwards but forward progress still results in a dirty rear axle.

I'm currently having the '22 Coupe engine bored out to .020 over and I will be installing new aluminum pistons. What clearence should I allow for heat expansion of the pistons so it doesn't seize.
Last post
I think I've read earlier posts that have debated this subject, but when someone says that they allow 0.004 to 0.005 piston clearance measured at the cylinder skirt, does that mean that's the final honed DIAMETER is 4 to 5 thousandth greater than the measured aluminum piston diameter?
That is correct. The final honed ready to assemble clearance.

I won’t comment on winch brands. I will describe my installation. I connected the winch to a trailer coupler(1-7/8”) and then SECURELY installed a ball on the front of the trailer deck. Added cables that can reach to the tow vehicle battery. The winch is then stored out the weather and away from thieves. Just my method.

Generally the setting for initial would be 7/8 to 1 turn out from close.
Lots depends on the condition of the carb, try this initial, if trouble running, then turn out (more rich) by 1/4 turns of the knob

The drivers side rear door on our '21 Touring had become difficult to open, and even more difficult to close. Finally, today I removed the left rearmost body mounting bolt and installed a couple more flat washers. Problem solved. I hope it's good for another 101 years. Our car turned 101 on May 28.

I like old ships and this a a pretty cool cap.
If I had one, I'd put a small speaker in the bottom of it, and then when people are looking at the car, I'd quietly whisper help me help me into the microphone to freak them out!
I do like the idea of a finned lower radiator pipe too, I also think that would work.

A couple of years ago, I either lost the font. or someone stole it, from the oil taillamp on our '21 Touring. I have since found a replacement, but have not painted and installed it. Anybody got a tip on how to make sure the font is tight and secure, other than what would be obvious? I realize most any adult would be able to twist one off,...

I have a Johnny Cash special 1915 touring with a 1921 body, as I was told when I bought the body. The back rest of the front seat has a bow towards the back, giving me a real nice extra legroom since I am sitting further back. All other touring models I have seen have a straight back from side to side. Mine is more difficult access for passengers...
Last post
Sometime back I took apart a 1917-1919 front half of a touring. The approx. 1 inch square tack rail had a piece of angle iron that ran across the back, mounted to the tack rail to help keep the back straight. Could be that piece is missing and over time has allowed the seat to bow.

Hey All!
We are starting on a 1916 touring car. The rods between the running board supports have mismatched bolts. I wonder if someone could post a picture of the correct hardware. Maybe a description would do.
Thanks in advance.

I have since learned they are the truss rods. One straight and one with a dip. I believe 1/2 inch stock. I have some square nuts and some hex nuts on this car so that is why I am wondering the correct fastening.
Thanks,

Coolant will leak where water will not, and I suspect that some or a lot of the success of reusing head gaskets in the early days was due to the fact that water was pretty much all you had and small leaks would typically just rust shut.

I thought the large grease cap located here was to keep the uni joint greased but when I pulled the motor/trans the inside of the ball is empty, joint has a light oil coating.
Does this mean the engine/trans oil keeps this area lubed? Either that or the hole from the large grease cap is blocked.

A recent post detailed some problems fitting a late model apron to an improved car.
My 1925 roadster needs an apron like these, but I have to use an earlier narrow one to clear the accessory shock absorbers.
The khaki one I restored for the roadster. The grey one is for the 26-7 models with the extra hole for the screw below the crank handle....

The apron that was on my 27 is like your gray one, no sign of a thimble ever having been there. I don't understand what the thimble is really for. Maybe on the earlier models without the mounting screw below the crank hole it avoided rattling by pushing the crank spring inward against the front engine support?
The repair manual shows a spacer for...

I know Winfield carbs were made in different sizes. What are the largest and smallest Winfield carbs? What is the largest size that can be used om a T motor, while still retaining drivability for street use, if the motor has a .280 or .290 lift cam and a Model A exhaust manifold? Is a Winfield even recommended for street driving?
