"fixing" our wood wheels

First post
I am now in the process of replacing the wood-to-rim rivets on the second wheel, so far, on our '21 Touring. I did one previously by drilling out the rivets, one at a time, and replacing them with flat head 1/4 inch screws with a flat washer and locking nut. I'm not too happy with the nuts showing in between the spokes but what else could I do? I...
Last post
The three rivets are not what holds that wheel together. The steel rim is heat shrunk onto the wooden fellow to be tight. Using bolts or screws to falsely secure a loose wheel is very bad idea. Fix it right
I don't think Model T wheels were heat shrunk only the big old wagon wheels. There is some old factory footage of wheels being assembled and...

What physical characteristics should I look for in a 1913-14 head? Thank you, Craig

I believe the 1913 head have square mold marks.
1914-1916 were pretty much the same. Casting date, (month-day) not year was toward the back.

1925 wheels

First post
My 25 pickup has loose spokes in its 21 inch removable wheels.
my guess is that it is due to our hot dry climate here in Tucson Arizona.
A couple of questions.
Did 25 T's come with 30 X 31/2 clincher wheels ?
If so and I buy a set of 30 X 31/2 rebuilt wheels how can I seal them to prevent loose spokes?
Last post
Most 1925 open cars still used 30 X 3 1/2 wheels. Most knowledgeable people use Calimers wheel shop in Pennsylvania.

Hi there. :D
It has been a very long time since I posted anything on the forum, but today I decided to come back and discuss Model Ts with you all.
As a reminder, I live in France and I started to take an interest in the model T in 2004, starting by restoring a French Ford T 1924 with Torpedo bodywork by “A Rousset”. This car was then destroyed...

For those interested, these wheels are French. I found mention of them on an old car site where someone had a French Accessory book which listed them, seems that they were used on several French cars in the 1920's including Citroen.

Last post
I think I've read earlier posts that have debated this subject, but when someone says that they allow 0.004 to 0.005 piston clearance measured at the cylinder skirt, does that mean that's the final honed DIAMETER is 4 to 5 thousandth greater than the measured aluminum piston diameter?
That is correct. The final honed ready to assemble clearance.

I won’t comment on winch brands. I will describe my installation. I connected the winch to a trailer coupler(1-7/8”) and then SECURELY installed a ball on the front of the trailer deck. Added cables that can reach to the tow vehicle battery. The winch is then stored out the weather and away from thieves. Just my method.

Does anyone know what setting I should use for the initial mixture control setting on this Holly G carburetor? The rod that controls it was binding and in the process of fixing that, I stupidly forgot to note the exact setting before I started messing with it.

Generally the setting for initial would be 7/8 to 1 turn out from close.
Lots depends on the condition of the carb, try this initial, if trouble running, then turn out (more rich) by 1/4 turns of the knob

I had a couple extra T blocks that weren’t being used. I wondered if I planted some seeds in the cylinders in the early spring that maybe a new Model T might sprout. Well, we'll see! I bought 4 of their Montgomery Ward Riverside tires about 8 years ago. I saved one of the tires which was on the car for a spare. I am wondering about minimum amount of gas I should have in my tank (T Touring '16) to get no troubles when driving uphill.
I do have a gas gauge.and I currently measured 20 liters (=6 gal) in the tank. How deep can I go to be still on safe side? Nothing is more worse than driving uphills a frequently used street and the engine stops.

In southeast PA on a tour last summer I ran low of gas on the last hill of the tour. There were 4 gallons of gas in my 1913 (tank under the seat). I recommend a minimum of 5 gallons. I still get kidding from other club members for running low on gas.

Sometime back I took apart a 1917-1919 front half of a touring. The approx. 1 inch square tack rail had a piece of angle iron that ran across the back, mounted to the tack rail to help keep the back straight. Could be that piece is missing and over time has allowed the seat to bow.

Coolant will leak where water will not, and I suspect that some or a lot of the success of reusing head gaskets in the early days was due to the fact that water was pretty much all you had and small leaks would typically just rust shut.

We had looked at buying a wood kit or making the wood. A local T guy made in his cabinet shop all the wood for his 25 and has not upholstered it yet.. I haven't find anyone making the upper rear corners but everything else. I prefer 17-22 but would use 23-25 if needed. My wife said no to anything earlier as she is tired of...

Looking for an estimated value of my 14 Runabout. Car was restored in the 60's. Starts and runs on mag. Paint is old and has imperfections but no rust. Looks better in picture than in person. Thanks in advance for your input.

If the owner is willing to give factual information and a history of what he knows about the car I would want to give a good offer. Knowing the time and cost to restore a T in this era would be something to think about. It’s not cheap. Roadsters and Tourings in the brass era will always be desirable. If it’s drives good and wouldn’t have to have...

Aluminum Radiator?

Desperate times and all that... Are any of the eBay, etc. aluminum radiators a drop-in for a low cowl Model T or at least close? I can work around the possible inlet/outlet mismatch and lack of proper filler. I just need something to hold water so I can drive my car.
Thanks,
Matt

My two cents on what it takes to use an aluminum radiator ,all I did is move the output and input spouts andmove the mounting tabs lower, and put on a dowel attach to the steel rod to attach the cowel.
And I learned how to weld aluminum that day too! A man at my church is a professional welder and was able to teach me.

I'm gearing up to change motor and trans over on two of my RHD T's, I havent tackled an extraction/refit before on a T so learning as I go. I have undone and removed all that I can see.
I made up a jig to hold the drive shaft up.
The concern is the brake pedal looks to be sticking further out than the other car. Its better to drive with more foot...

Update - Motor and Trans are out.
I managed to leave the steering as is, the starter motor and generator as is and didn't touch the pedals at all!
Removed the carby, once engine was broken free adjusted the lift for greater tilt bit by bit.
When inlet manifold was forward and close to steering shaft (right hand drive) we levered the other side of...

I picked this up on an auction over the weekend. Rusty but there's absolutely no play in the gears and babbitt bearings. My thought is it was mounted and twisted the end of the crankshaft off. Promptly removed and put on a shelf. Anyone have one like it? Anyone using one? Any info will be appreciated!
Thanks!

Have had a lot of time to think the last week and half as I had a knee replacement.

Hi Dennis,
Hope the knee healing goes' well. I made my speedster body using 3/4 10 ply plywood for the base. The local steel supply has 20 gauge angle in 1 , 1 1/2 & 2 that can be easily formed to the plywood and spot or tack welded to the body giving a large area of support. I mounted mine to flat to the frame with rubber shock mounts under for...

A cotter pin is a tapered pin with a nut on the thin end used to fix a lever on a shaft - most commonly on older bicycle pedals.
We stop nuts unscrewing with split pins, but only after tightening them with a spanner.

I’m looking to purchase a new low style radiator and found these two listed on Ecklers.
My question is this, has anyone purchased either and how did they work.
The customer service person was very nice but could not determine if made in America or any difference in them?

Berg’s radiators, or at least the one I have, didn’t have the reinforcement across the bottom. Those he was making just recently DID have that feature. And the top tank was one piece.
There’s a video on YouTube showing him building one.

My ‘26 Roadster came with a water pump. It also has a rough and falling apart belt that is 1-1/8x36. We figured out how to adjust the fan assembly to get the old one off, but the new one is just a bit too small. Anyone else have this? What is the first, second, last pulley to put the belt on?
