I am finally getting around to replacing my 51 year old Universal tires on my ‘26 Coupe since 1971 with New 21” Goodyear tires with flaps. Anyone ever try removing rock hard tires from rims? It is a bear! I had to cut a 4” section out of the tire with a plunge saw to gain access to the bead on each side of the rim to grind the reinforcement wires...

Hi All,
My (almost) new replacement muffler has a 9/64 gap at either end where the end cap is tack welded to the outer shell. As you can see in the photo, exhaust gasses are leaking at both ends (and into the car). muffler.jpg The rolled seam seems to be the problem as it prevents a tight seal of the end caps. In addition, the muffler does not fit...

Hi Pep C,
The muffler I showed is NOT a Snyders muffler. It is a stainless steel one built by John Page and a friend back in 2013. I used it to show how mufflers SHOULD be made with a bump on the rim of the end caps where the seam fits nicely. I'm sorry for any confusion. It is not from one of the vendors. I wish he could have provided mufflers to...

Hi Everyone. I'm trying to do a reasonably authentic restoration on my new 1912 touring. Serial is around 130000. It's a June car and a better than average original. It came from Colorado and I am the third owner.
1) The car came with a Dodge Brothers Mfg steering spider in steel. The acorn nut is also steel. All very nicely polished and painted...

I have removed the distributor. The car came with a very nice Heinz coil box. They rebuilt the original engine with a flywheel from a different car. I will charge the magnets and install it and the newly rewound 1912 coils that came with the car. I have some Bosch plates that I am using on some speedsters I'm building.

What is a good source for the quarter and rear window wood trim on a 1927 Model T Coupe?
I looked at Howell's, Mac's, Lang's, and searched the internet. Mac's wants way too much money for their trim.
I don't have the tools to make my own in my garage so I can't do that.
I thought about just using wood pieces but not sure about that.

I went with FORDWOOD. The window wood kit was $326.70, which included shipping. It took about a month from the order date to shipping. They manufacture the parts in their family shop in Utah.

You failed to mention if your tube has a rubber stem, or a metal one. They are called rim nuts. Since you have wire wheels, you can use the Model A tubes providing your wheels are Ford wheels. A&L parts specialties has those parts. I don't know if they sell the tubes with the proper valve stems, or if you have to put them in yourself.

Any ideas? I know it is NOT supposed to slip on the spindle but this one is really tight.

Myles, if you use a drift to drive the bearing out, the seal will come with it. There is no need to remove the seal first.

Good point David. In my experience only Hayes made wire wheels with metal felloes. They are the only ones I know of which have the tyre fitted on a separate rim that de-mounts in the same way as they do on wooden spoked wheels. Perhaps there is some confusion between rim and felloe.

I can't get the passenger side door to close with new welting and door panel. Most everyone agrees that Henry Ford thought his son Edsel was weak and spent much of his energy trying to toughen him up, to no avail. I think Edsel was a gentle soul that would have loved nothing better than to spend his time with the engineers designing better cars rather than in management trying to fill the shoes of Henry. Car design is where...

I agree with the OP. Unfortunately Henry was not the type to relinquish authority. Edsel was a genius, but I doubt that he could possibly worked well in any capacity with his father as his boss. Ford would have been well ahead of where it was in 1927 if Edsel had his way. Ford didn't really catch up with GM and Chrysler until about 1939.

I have a couple varieties of Model T woven lining on the shelf and...

...Glue wasnt necessary. Bonding the linings is a modern thing.
Modern, yes, but also necessary for this application — there was a lot of spring-back from the lining and there is no way the rivets could have held it snug to the band. The brake drum is only 5 diameter and the lining was not happy with that much curvature.

I ran a Kingston L4 on a 1917 runabout for years. I used to commute in that car about 30 miles each way. I had taken off a Holley straight-through car, which gave terrible mileage and had a disappointing stumble when starting off that defied remedy. The Holley gave terrible mileage on the commute, always less than 10 mpg.
But I had this dandy...

I've taken an interest in the variety of cross drive front plate magneto set ups. particularly the Matco/Eisemann style. My question is about rotation. does anybody know what Magneto rotation is required for this setup? (clockwise/Counterclockwise). thank you all

Are there any thoughts on the most “user friendly “ magneto for this set up? Best Drive coupler?

Engine oil leaking into differential?

First post
I haven’t driven the ‘24 touring I bought last October in several months, due to having the front axle out for rebuild. I’m close to getting the front axle back in so I decided to check the oil in the differential. Upon removing the plug, oil gushed out and continued to run for a while (fortunately I had a bucket at the ready). My first thought...

Miles,
Boy! Did you get some great advice! I'll add one little thing - if the brass (originally Babbitt) bushing at the end of the drive shaft near the universal is badly worn it will let any oil that makes it that far easily enter the drive shaft tube.

Okay. I tried to start my T when I noticed the key switch connection to BATT was sloppy in that I had to jiggle the key for the coils to buzz so I decided to check the switch. I gently pried up the 4 tabs and exposed the innards. The contacts were very dirty and one of the two contacts on the small inner ring was bent flat against the fiber base...

LOL! Okay Alan. But it was such a pretty day today, I was anxious to take advantage of the beautiful weather and daylight. I just dabbed the Vaseline on each contact. I didn’t slather it on the pressed paper backing plate which could have joined all 7 of the contacts with a possibly conductive path at between them. I have always been Leary of the...

New owner to a '16 touring car. It has a 10,9xx,xxx engine. I am going to do a compression check and I would like to learn what is considered a healthy number.
Under the rear seat there is storage. Should that area have a metal lid like over the fuel tank?
Thanks for the help.

Spring loaded oil pan mount

A long number of years ago I remember the late great Ted Aschman had a hint about replacing the mounting blocks on the oil pan ears with springs. I did this on my 22 center door and it worked very well, but that car is long gone to Ron Kipling and then from his estate on to others. I looked in my copies of Ted's Tinkerin Tips(both volumes) and in...

FWIW, I found an old mud flap and cut squares off, drilled a hole in the center and insert them between the frame and pan ears. They’re very heavy duty, thin and absorb a lot of vibration.

Bronze Differential Bearing?

I got most of the oil pumped out of my ‘24’s differential and probed around a bit with a borescope. Is the yellowish component in the first picture the bronze axle thrust bearing everyone says should be there in place of the original babbit? Sorry I couldn’t get a wider view. The second photo is the ring gear for scale (hopefully). There was no...

Yes that is a modern brass one. and every once in a while you find a whole babbitt one. But usualy they are a pile of pieces in the bottum of the Diff.

Top Iron Identification
by
DontKnowMuch » Mon Mar 14, 2022 12:43 pm
Is there a comprehensive article on identifying top irons for the various years of open cars? I have seen studies of comparisons of changes of various parts over the years but don't remember one for top irons.
I have found diagrams for a 1915-22 Touring, a 1912-14 Runabout, and a 1915 Roadster.
Do you have links to others?
Thanks

I am intrigued by Jay's collection of gas vapourisers:
If you look at the sales blurb that comes with this last one (Imperial) at: (scroll down) my question is - DID THESE ACTUALLY WORK/ DO ANYTHING USEFUL?
I am half tempted to try one!
Experts, please advise :-)

Allan, the intake heater was on my car when I got it, and I can only assume the fuel quality prior to 1954 (when the car was last used before I got it) was worse than now, or the original owner just assumed the performance to be normal. It runs much smoother and with more power without it.

So I repainted my headlights and tail light and now they don’t work. Reading through the forums it is apparent I painted over the location where the light grounds. What I’m still unsure of is where exactly do I need to sand and remove paint to make the ground connections. I’m a visual learner If someone could post a picture of the location. The...

No worries Jim. I learned by experience when I built my 1917 wooden bodied shooting brake, and used that experience when fitting twin tail lights to my barn find buckboard.

At a Shop Talk in Mid-Michigan yesterday I learned something that might be of interest to those of you with gas tank repair issues. There is an outfit near Flint that people have used to repair Model T and A gas tanks that in the old days would have gone to the trash pile. With new tanks hard to find, repair might be a good option. Gummed up,...

Adjusting the low band is not very convenient, unless you pull the floor out. I made this specifically for adjusting the band, from underneath the car, and I carry it with me in the car's tool kit. The photo pretty much shows it all, no need to go into any great detail about making it. I cut a socket off, and welded it to one end, for loosening...
