Affordable EV?

Supposedly, a basic, compact, pickup-type EV will be available for around $20 K sometime next year. (The "Slate"). It's an interesting concept. Range 150 to 250 miles, EPA cycle. Motor is 150 KW, or about 200 HP. 1/2 ton+ load capacity. "Regular" cab, 5 ft bed standard, with assorted, post-purchase options for different body configurations, such as SUV and sport vehicle, at added cost. USA-built. There's some big money behind this venture. (Bezos, et al) Will it actually be brought to market? Maybe so. I believe it would sell if they can meet price and capability targets, and actually deliver a practical, durable, low cost vehicle, in volume, as Henry Ford & Co. managed to do over a century ago.

I believe its base price ends up around 20k after the EV tax credit of $7500?
I like the possibilities of this truck. We need this kind of “blank slate” concept across our vehicle markets.
Love the fact it’s a mini truck and looks like a small pickup in design.

No dealership required. Build it online and order.
I still would love to see a ICE option and manual transmission but it is what it is.

My Comment: If they can stay within $5000 of their base price I'm In. I would like to see a range of closer to 350 miles though, Then I could go see my 93 Y/O mother.

I'd like to see a hybrid driveline with less battery and more bed.... at least a 6' bed. Regardless of that, they'll have to sell a LOT of these to be viable.

Makes me wonder what the range is fully loaded with the heat or AC on driving at highway speeds or the duration sitting in stop and go traffic.

I'm pretty sure it would be well under the maximum range. A/C takes a lot of power, as does electric cabin heat/defrost. A Houstonite, for instance, on a summer commute in heavy traffic, would probably get very poor range. A Detroiter in a winter commute situation, likewise. I'd think a Prius-style driveline and a 6' bed would make it much more widely attractive and more versatile. I wonder if they could do that for 30K?

does it even have air and heat?? i would assume defrost maybe because it is required?
for something like this little truck i wouldn't need air with the 2-50 system , 2 windows down and 50 mph! but yea,like you all, i am looking forward to seeing where this venture goes. it is priced right,

Is it priced right? After 20 years (and this goes for most all cars on the market) is someone going to be able to keep it going? Is a new car nothing more than a phone or a computer that is worthless after a couple decades?
