Washington — The U.S. Department of Energy said Sunday it would announce a "major scientific breakthrough" this week, after media reported a federal laboratory had recently achieved a major milestone in nuclear fusion research. The Financial Times reported Sunday that scientists in the California-based Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) had achieved a "net energy gain" from an experimental fusion reactor. They were working on that twenty years ago when we lived in Livermore.
I wonder if they can have it ready in time to charge the batteries of 200,000,000 electric cars in just twelve more years?

Born cynical.

We're going to have electric scooters and wheelchairs and skateboards, too! Even the doorknobs and shirt buttons will be electric! Odor-free, carbon-neutral pets will replace messy litter boxes and feeding bowls! With the Carbon Monster banished forever, every day will be a beautiful blue sky day with free meds and bluebirds singing over the White Cliffs of Burbank and the sun will smile brightly with limited UV rays and the cholestrol-free Teletubbies will sing and dance while modeling Kardashian-designed Drag fashions! The sea ice will return to Boston Harbor and the penguins will freely roam the entire planet as beautiful blue-green glaciers advance ever closer to the equator and brisk, refreshing breezes gently stir the perfectly pure snows of the once-torrid and lifeless Sahara! Falling sea levels will reveal wonderous new frontiers of mountains and canyons as sustainable development built along clean, modern lines gives birth to new, planned communities with free WiFi and full digital access!

Heavens, NO! All fatty, salty, processed food and sugary cola will be banned, and so will "driving". "Driving", so-called, is an act of direct aggression against Mother Gaia! Banning driving will make every car a zero-emissions car!

I thought up a very good way to keep the people moving without fuel, however it is yet to be developed. I used to coast down a hill on my wagon or on roller skates and thought what a good idea it would be to have a lever at the bottom of the hill and just pull the lever and the hill would tilt the other way.

The RONCO TILT-A-HILL gravity maximumizing device will be well received. No longer will itinerate schoolboys have to trudge 5 miles to school each day, uphill both ways.

(Anyone remember the "BasementToilet Flushes UP!" ads in the back pages of Popular Mechanix ? I always thought that was about the worst idea I ever heard of.)

That's what our basement toilet does. The basement floor sits below the level of the sewer pipe. There is a cistern and a pump. A pump that I hope NEVER needs to be replaced! :o
