Windlace on !927 Coupe

Post by BLB27 » Tue Nov 01, 2022 10:34 pm

I am have installed the windlace on the" body frame" next to the rear of the door and now getting ready to install the front windlace. It is my understanding that the front windlace also is supposed to be attached to the "body frame" and not on the "door".

Here is my dilemma! It appears that the original front windlace was installed on the door on my coupe. I don't specifically remember it being there, but I have three pictures which sure seem to show it on the door.

I have looked carefully at the front door frame and do not see how it could have been attached there. There are no holes that would indicate it was installed there.

I sure would appreciate 1927 coupe owners sharing with me where it is installed on their cars. Photos would be helpful.

Sorry for the sideway photos. It would not allow me to have them in the correct position!

Jim, Thanks for repositioning the photo. Could you also do the other one? Where can I find out how to do that so I don't post any more that way?

I send the picture to my Apple IPad photos, edit it (that is, rotate it), then re-post it. Jim Patrick

There are several spiral nails or tacks that push into the holes and then the molding slides over top.

Got the body platform in epoxy primer ready for the painter. This body has wood panels on the seat risers and wood trim with an open grain. I filled the grain and primed rhe wood with Kilz wood primer and caulked the spaces between the sheet metal wood trim. Only after I was satisfied did I paint it with DP 90. It seems I tried every product on the market to fill the wood grain and the spaces between the rails and sheet metal, making every conceivable mistake. Thank goodness the end result turned out good. It's one of those jobs you look at when finished and wonder what took you so long.

I hope that a couple of 1927 coupe owners will respond to my original post. I would like to get photos of their front windlace; that is, whether it is on the door frame or the the front of the door itself.

It may be that ther upper part attaches to the door and the lower part, from the dash area down, attaches to the body. Try putting "coupe Interior" in the search box above.

Ken, Thank you! Here is what I conclude from you photos.

The front windlace is installed on the door from the top of the door to the bottom.

There is windlace on the frame above the door.

This is what I believe was the situation on my coupe.

I would like at least one more response with photos similar to yours.

You had one of the nicest and most complete Model Ts I have ever seen, and you have pictures of the windlace as it came off, too boot. What else do you need? From the pictures you have posted pre-paint, it was the car for which all others would have been compared against for originality. Be very wary of anyone who comes along and says "here's how mine looks"...you don't know if he did it right, if the guy before him did it right, or what...

Perhaps this will help?

"There is windlace on the frame above the door."

That was not the case on my '26 coupe, but I do see it on Ken's coupe. My '26 coupe had remains of windlace on front edge of door and top to floor on the body at the latch side of the door frame. The top of the door frame on the body is covered with a 'U' shaped strip of light gage sheet metal that clips to the body. That 'u' is covered with fabric and slipped over the metal, one of the final steps of the interior finish application, per Mike Francis when I talked to him @ Hershey last month. Those 'U' clips frequently are missing in barn/hedgrow finds. ymmv, jb

Scott has a great point, Bruce. If you recall, I begged you to keep your coupe original because it was, at the time, the world’s most flawless, all-original 1926-‘27 coupe. You were also advised to take pictures of everything, before starting your “restoration”. I would guess that you didn’t because of the multitude of questions you have asked during every phase of your restoration. Had you documented every part of your T prior to and during disassembly, you would be the foremost authority and have the most accurate record of how it was ALL originally done on the assembly line and could have been the answer man for anyone who had questions about how it was done on their 1926-‘27 coupes instead of asking questions of Model T owners who know as much about how it was done as you. It is really unfortunate that such a wonderful reference source no longer exists but, as we always say, it’s your T to do with as you wish. There is no doubt that once you are done, it will be a great looking T, but a T is original only once. Jim Patrick
