A Scope for Looking Into Dark Places
A friend of mine was complaining about his colonoscopy, which got me to thinking... I have never been able to confirm that the babbitt thrust washers have been replaced in my differential.
Can someone recommend a good but inexpensive bore scope that works with an iPhone?
Thanks,
Mike

I have a similar self contained bore scope and use it all the time to look into places I can’t see. It is a must have tool.

Re: A Scope for Looking Into Dark Places
There are all kinds available. I purchased one for $10 included shipping from US seller for my lap top because of limited use - performed well came with some pick up attachments & a 90degree lens. Looked for brass spark plug nut my fried dropped into the combustion chamber to confirm it was there. Retrieval options being explored.

Most need something added to the camera probe to act like a wand to aim it
Not sure how any endoscope/borescope would work with grease or oil smear on the lens
The one mentioned above has some very desirable functions - taking a camera shot is a great plus. Not sure what the other controls do but if the left-right arrows cause the image to move LorR without moving the probe BUY IT!
Read how they connect carefully if they don't include their own display. Price/usage buyer be aware

Note the cost of less expensive ones & their options over the recommended one. recommended one is a good buy at its price
Did an eBay search for US sellers https://www.ebay.com/itm/385157400041?h ... R7DJusWPYQ

The past is a great place and I don't want to erase it or to regret it, but I don't want to be its prisoner either.

Re: A Scope for Looking Into Dark Places
If you are truly interested in looking into dark places you might try the Kalamity Dick thread. I cannot verify the thrust washers there but sometimes feel like I've had a colonoscopy after reading it.
Often my own fault.
I hope you find what you need.

When did I do that?

I bought this one for $40 on amazon. It seems to work well. The camera wire is crazy long, it takes photos and video. If you want to take photos and video, you need to provide an SD card, and you need a reader to pull them off. I just hope you don't get a photo like mine when you peer into a spark plug port:
It's 1080p but I wouldn't shoot home videos off of it.
Where is the OBD2 port on this thing?

Re: A Scope for Looking Into Dark Places
My track record for going cheap, especially with electronics, is quite poor, so I dropped a few Benjamins on a Vividia Ablescope with a long flexible probe, steerable camera with an integral light, and the ability to wirelessly view and record stills and videos on a smartphone or tablet. Among many other things, I’ve used it to verify good cleaning and sealant coverage in all bays of my T’s gas tank, and to verify the bronze bushing on the right side of my rear axle (it just won’t go past the ring gear to look at the left side). I also need to periodically look at valves and seats in an overhead valve air-cooled aircraft engine.

It may just be my luck, but if even if it is, NOTHING electrical from Harbor Freight goes home with me.

Try Northern Tool or NAPA.
