Float for gas gauge.

Post by nicklm » Sun Jan 07, 2024 12:50 pm

We have been lucky to have found an accessory gas gauge for our T and used it for years. It has started to leak and will need to be resealed. It is a glass tube that is near the passenger door hinge on our 26 touring. Our gas tank is below the windshield and the gauge has worked well.

Since it will need to come apart, I would like to find something that will float on top of the gas in the tube so the level will be more obvious. Does anyone have a suggestion of something that will last in the gas? It will need to fit into an approx. 1/4 inch diameter tube.

Thanks for any suggestions that may work.
Nick

Is 1/4” O.D or I.D. In the jewelry department, they have cheap ladies earrings with a stud attached to a small hollow metal ball. It could be brass, copper or plated steel. Find an earring with a diameter matching the ID of your tube, cut off the stud and you have a nice hollow metal ball to use as a float. Jim Patrick

Jim,
Thanks for the suggestion. i will look for a brass or other hollow ball. It has worked for years and now decided to leak. This ball will make it easier to read.

On boiler & fire truck water level gauges they put a contrasting color stripe on the glass tube on the side away from the veiwer. The liquid will
distort the stripe like a magnifying glass making it wider so it stands out and can be seen as the level.

small neoprene o-ring. they come in colors other than black. And as suggested some tape (white or silver duct tape) for background
