I have a vintage aluminum 3 speed Warford. What is the correct main shaft bearing preload?

Timken says 0.001-0.005 for tapered roller bearings.

I think Timken considers them the same. If you are thinking preload is a measurement of pressure your in for trouble. Modern bearing settings are vehicle specific & involves a torque wrench procedures & specific unloading according to spindle thread pitch. Then lock nut torque & a dial indicator to verify clearance. Things that are a little hard to accomplish with a rotating shaft on a Warford. Best is to figure out how to get a dial indicator on it.

Then you run into this pesky little thing called expansion. My Atlas lathe, you have to run for about an hour to get bearings up to temp. You then set the end play to about what was suggested above.
While you can set the input and output to some extent using a dial indicator if you can mount it. The cluster bearing shaft, because it uses shims, would have to go by feel.
I would set so there is a little drag when you turn it.
Dry or lube the bearings? When I setup the Timken bearings I use the same lube as I would in the unit, in the Case of the Warford, I use 600w.
