Georgia motor vehicle tag

Post by Dan Hatch » Tue Sep 09, 2025 1:52 pm

Found a couple of these dated 1925 and 1926. Took them out of a T from Ga years ago that I parted out.
Anyone know the history of them? Found some on eBay but have not found the story. I know Ga had regular license plates, but why these? Thanks Dan

Mt guess: They issued the disc as proof of yearly renewal instead of issuing a new set of tags every year. Texas did that during WWII. Now you just get a windshield sticker, if your papers are in order, and it costs as much as 3 used Model Ts used to cost.

You nailed it! Clearly says "registered"
In searching only found between 1920 & 1928

The past is a great place and I don't want to erase it or to regret it, but I don't want to be its prisoner either.

Dan

Those are title registration metal discs, state law had a fee to purchase, required to mount on firewall or dash, supposed to prevent theft.

The early GA ones are undated, began around 1913 I think, and rare, but GA records list numbers on the early undated disc for dating. The early ones are worth many manyhundreds $$. GA license plate collectors that are members of ALPCA can give details as these discs are highly specialized collections.

Florida followed GA and began title registration metal discs in 1923, numbers list the high ones to about 1928 I think.

I collect the FL, most go $30-$80!or so at swaps, higher on eBay . Low serial numbers early ‘23s, higher later years.

This one on my ‘26 for looks.

Thanks Dan T. Guess I should nail them to an old 14 firewall I have and bring to Moultrie?
