Period picture-Ford dealer and filling station

Post by 1922ford » Sun Mar 22, 2020 8:34 am

From a notation on the back of the photo this combination Ford dealership and Texaco filling station was located in (or near) my hometown of Covington, Kentucky. There was no specific location mentioned and there are scant photographic clues as to where it may have been located. There are few definitive clues but my suspicion is that it was actually located in Independence, Kentucky, the county seat of Kenton County, and some 5 miles south of Covington. There is no contemporary building with which I’m familiar that’s anywhere near the one pictured, even allowing for much remodeling or repurposing.

The construction appears to be wood frame with metal siding on the right hand side which somewhat resembles block, a more substantial construction. Based on the T Models to the right in the photo it may date from the last days of T Model production as they would appear to be in fairly good shape. The wide door to the left of the picture in which a couple is standing is interesting in that there is no ramp or stairway to the ground and it doesn’t appear wide enough through which to drive a car if it was intended to give access to a showroom via a temporary ramp. Behind the couple there appears to be a lattice-work affair intended to keep someone from inadvertently walking through the door to certain injury. The second story may have been living quarters for the owner, a once common practice.

The FREE AIR sign is quite legible but the sign above the door to the rear of the roadster pickup is another matter. It appears to say ??? GARAGE. My photo management program is woefully lacking.

For all its unanswered questions it’s an interesting photographic memento of days past.

Looks like it is on the east coast somewhere?
