Hello.
I was lucky to get two big oil cans here for a good price. (In classified parts.) I am talking of this half-round cans with snapping bottom and long neck.
I will have to make my own mounting bracket, this is not the problem, I have a few questions:
- This oil cans are made from thin steel sheet metal. Because they have surface rust on outside, they have an old "copper" paint. Cleaning the entire thing in my ultrasonic cleaner made most of the remaining paint go off. What I plan to do is using fine steel-wool and remove the remaining rust with it. Then I will polish them on felt disks to get away this little scratches from grinding. -- So far everything is clear.
What color did this oil cans have around 1916-1919? Where they naked steel, or did they have a copper or brass surface?
I want to restore one of the oil cans and actually use it in my '16 Lizzy. Even as rust protection I think about either electroplating the oil can with copper or brass. If brass, I will use copper first, then gold. This is cheap (only a very thin layer) and needs no polishing.
- Where was this Oil Can usually mounted in the T? Mine has a diameter of 3.5" and overall height of 6.75". Should roughly match. It has "EAGLE" and "MADE IN U.S.A." pressed in.
A few pictures would enlighten me a bit.

I would Google MTFCA: oil can. That will get you lots of pictures and information.

It appears to be dependent upon who's manufacture's name is on the neck base and when it was made.
This link indicates that there is a publication on oil cans by Mike Walters

Lots of discussion and many links (ignore the links to eBay as they are o longer active)
