How to repair a Gas Tank Cheap way

Post by Quickm007 » Mon Apr 27, 2020 11:05 am

I restored 2 years ago my 1911 gas tank and I used POOR 15 fuel tank sealer. It's work fine. I already used this with my 1922 roadster 12 years ago and still working really well. But my 1911 gas tank was in very poor condition and the product working realy well and I still recommended it. But a small leak start last year on the driver side. I would like to keep my 1911 original tank and they are in BO for long time at all suppliers like Lang's.

I do not want to welding because I have a very bad experience welding a gas tank which explosed on my face couple years ago without any health issue for me, lucky I am.... I took all precautions, washing the gas tank carefully and let the tank breathing a week to be sure it have no gas vap but the explosion happen no matter all precautions I made.

So I decided to use a cheap paste named Permatex fuel Tank repair at $9.99 only. You cut the paste and you mix the epoxy stick to a uniform color. If mixing is difficult you warm the epoxy to room temperature. Personnally I used 10 secondes microwave. You apply the paste to the repair surface with 30 minutes forcing into crack or holes to fill out. You could apply without removing the gas if you want and it is what I did. Just need to apply pressure until adhesion begins to take effect arround 2 minutes. It was set in 1 hour. I waited 24h00 and bring back the gas tank in to the car. I made a little tour of 30 minutes with my wife and no more leaks.

Happy to keep the original tank.
