Help me identify this

Post by SamInStL » Wed Jun 03, 2020 11:07 am

This hubcap has me puzzled. Pre-T probably. First 1500 maybe. Can anyone help me identify this?

It is later truck after the Model T era. Exact years not sure, without looking in the Green Book. (The Green book is the Ford chassis parts book that covers parts from 1928 up to 1948)
I know the voices aren't real but damn they have some good ideas!

I believe it may be a front hub dust cap that fits from 1936-1948.

When did I do that?

Sam, they got it for you. From my poor memory, I believe 1904 was the first year that FoMoCo put their name on a hubcap, and that was on the 4 cylinder model B. They were assemblers, and not manufacturers so they did buy a catalog item in the basic hubcap and applied this medallion. It was quite a while until they came up with the famous Ford script. This particular one is off serial #1 B

Even the 1909 model T had a block letter "FORD" hubcap. The "Ford" script was on most, but not all 1909 model Ts on the radiator, as well as on the early number plates attached to the seat riser or dash. Significant use of the script does not go much earlier on any part of the Ford automobiles.
I have no specific knowledge of the cap you show, other than I have seen similar steel with script dust covers on several '30s into the '60s Ford cars and trucks. Some had internal threads, others had external threads.

The octagonal shape and Ford script sure looked like a hub cap and the external threads made me think pre-T. I hadn't considered the fact that script wasn't used right away on T's. Maybe it is from a truck in the 30's but for now it will be a wall hanger in my garage.

It is a neat item, Sam. Display proudly. The earliest use I’m aware of the famous Ford script was the name plate on the 1905 model F ford. It was enlarged a bit to include space for the serial number on the big brother of the T, the 1906 model N,R,S. If anyone has an earlier recollection it would be nice to share here. This is the model F plate, right below the front seat on the wood body.

I have these which are similar in shape and one has a bit of a smear of dried grease around its threads. But they are smaller and no Ford script. Was told they were grease caps for a Model A - never said year. So these are what you don't have

Frank I'm glad you kept looking. I believe that's exactly what I have, a hub cap for an AA. Even though it's now identified I'll still use it as a wall hanger in my garage. Thanks to all for their input.
