Triple Gear Pin Wear

Post by jagiven » Tue Feb 19, 2019 10:57 pm

The transmission book states to replace the triple gear pins if they have 0.005 wear. The pins measured 0.677, 0.677, and 0.675.

What is your thought on the 0.675 pin. Replace or keep? If I replace should all 3 be replaced to have the same OD for new bushing reaming

I don't think it enough to worry about but pressing out the pins and pressing in new pins is not a big deal and honing the new bushings is an easy task. If you have any concerns replace them while you have it out.

Just a heads up: It's been a long time since I did transmission work, but I know the pins have to come out in the correct direction. I don't remember if you push the pins out from on top or the bottom. The pins have a slight taper. PS. As of today I have had 87 birthdays and am still going strong.

The stock Ford pins are .676-50, to .677. All the New Old Stock Triple Gears I have, They are reamed by Ford and have a .680 hole in them. The K. R. Wilson triple Gear reamer, also reams a hole to .680.

.005 thousandths clearance is already wore out. At .005 thousandths, the gear will run cock eyed, and eat on the flywheel, to the center side.

I think you can push the pins out either way, however pressing them in should be done from the inner side for ease of alignment. The pressed in portion is slightly larger than the main portion, by about .001. They are not tapered. They could be pressed in or out in either direction.

The pins can ONLY be removed by tapping them out in the direction of the magnets or in other words smack on the long end that the gears go on. The pins are installed in the opposite direction. Doing it wrong will crack and ruin the flywheel. If they're only worn .002" I wouldn't worry about it. You're far more likely to have a problem trying to replace the pins than if you just leave well enough alone and use the old pins.

The old pins are normally .002 flat. fitting a new round bushing to a flat pin will not last very long, with out excessive wear, on bushing, and gear teeth.

What do you mean "The old pins are normally. 002 flat"?

I have never torn into an engine before, so this is all new to me.

Thanks,

Normally, the old pins will be .002 thousandths smaller from wear, on one side, compared to a 1/4 turn with the Mic. of the other side of the pin, which in many transmissions will be standard, or close to it. The pins should always be replaced.

There two companies making pins. One is junk, the other makes good pins, but not always the correct diameter. Just make sure they are all .677.

Also, always check the press in end, of the pin, as I have found some needing taken down in size. If you don't, the flywheel will crack.

Herm, what are the two companies and who makes the better ones? Who stocks the better ones?
