It's a Heinze. If the bottom contact is towards one end, it's a 1913. If in the center, it's a 1914. I make points for them, so they can be rebuilt like any other early coil.

I was going to say Heinze too, but it does not have the little clicker on the adjustment and the plate does not cover the whole top, so might be earlier then 1911.

It's definitely 1913-14 Heinze, depending on the contact locations I cited. Kingston made very similar coils at the same time but theirs have finger joints only at the top and bottom edges. Heinze units have them all the way up the sides. The ratchet you mention was changed to a very thin T-shaped bronze loop with an embossing that engaged knurling on the underside of the large brass ratchet nut. These thin loops are commonly broken or missing.

RV: Has the Coil Documentary article you were working on 2018 been published? I feel this information presented in the format of the recent HCCT book would be of great value and interest. Thanks, jb
