Ford script

Post by jiminbartow » Sat Mar 06, 2021 11:54 am

Many people think that the iconic Ford script is Henry Ford’s creation and his handwriting. Not so. In around 1907, Henry was looking for a logo for his fledgling company, when the company’s first Chief engineer/designer and friend, Childe Harold Wills, who also printed business cards used the calligraphy from his own cards to stylize the Ford script logo that is so iconic today. Wills left Ford and started his own car company (and the city of Marysville, MI) down along the St. Clair River which divides Michigan and Canada. There is an excellent small museum in Marysville that features many of the surviving Wills-Saint Claire Automobiles. They were a bit fancier than the Model T :D

The story I heard was that when Henry Ford went to Ireland to look up his ancestors, he found they spelled the name FORDE, so he put the E back in with the F cross.
