Question about the height of cowl gas tank

Post by NY John T » Fri Feb 26, 2021 11:14 am

Hi all,
I have a 27 Tudor and the gas tank sits a little below the level of the top of the cowl. Is this correct? I've seen pictures of 26-27's with the cowl gas tank sitting up against the cowl. I can't get under the dash just yet to check it out. Any thoughts?
Thanks,
John

The tank rides below the cowl, only close spot is the gutter that surrounds the gas cap, it directs spillage on the top of the tank to the ground.

I just installed mine and the top of the tank rests against two braces with webbing straps between. The height is determined by how thick the webbing is and how neat a job you did getting the webbing between the ribs on the braces. I did not take the time to cut the webbing as it is a little wide as it comes from the vendors. No big deal as mine sits about 1/16 low.

Here are three pages from the Ford Service Bulletin Essentials book on how to install the “new” under cowl gas tank. Jim Patrick

Also thrown in the mess is if you have the 27 model full cardboard pad that sits between the tank and firewall. This has some effect on how the tank sits . 26 has 2 webbing straps.
