Are our T’s worth more for scrap?
Just saw a couple of videos on YouTube that made me mad.
Seems that WW2 ships that were sunk in the Java sea have disappeared from the bottom of the sea.
Someone is scraping them out. Yes, going down and blowing them up for the metal. Whole ships where sailors died are being removed.
They are after pre atomic metal. Story said that all metal made after the atomic test are radioactive to a small degree.
So did T metal just oh up in price?
Maybe Model T Haven was ahead of the rest of us?

I’ve seen on the History channel that after the war tanks, armament and etc were dumped in the ocean. There is probably enough armament left in different countries that was probably scrapped and reused. The latest massive amount was left in Afghanistan and is being used again. It was more than a few dollars worth!

If they are salvaging ships from the bottom of the sea that were sunk in battle and had saliors perish in them THEY ARE DISTURBING THE FINAL RESTING PLACE AND GRAVES OF THESE BRAVE MEN! AND IT MUST BE STOPPED!

Perry: That is what Is discussing about this whole situation.
There was no real fingers pointed at who is doing this, but I have a good idea. The makers of video did not say who they suspected, but had to be someone who needs a lot of scrap.
One ship, a Dutch warship that was sunk with somewhere around 800 men lost in it is completely gone. Only a hole in the sea bottom is left to mark where it was,
There were some British ships, couple of Dutch ships, at least one US ship and a few Jap ships. All have some metal gone, the Dutch one was completely gone.
These people should be stopped and anyone that helped punished!

Unfortunately, that is what will happen to the majority of the parts at Model T Haven. Many massive junkyards disappeared over the years, with giant mobile scrappers grinding and crushing them up for transport to the ports for shipping.

Since the colonial powers are not there to protect them..., they are free game! Very sad but true. Money over honor.

OK, I have salvaged pre 1945 steel from the ocean. I bring it to the surface, transport it to a steel foundry, and melt it into ingots. The story goes that if I make new steel it will be contaminated by the radio active particles in the air. Why will this not happen to the salvaged steel ? I call BS on this one ! Thats not to say some country with no thought of right, wrong, or morality is not salvaging the ocean, I am sure they are.

Been going on for a lot of years folks! A ship's bell alone normally fetches $2,000.00 minimal. That's a lot in a poor country and they do not care about another country's honor to feed their families.

If you got into Ts as an investment, Bernie Madoff might have been your financial advisor.

Hank: One example they talked about on value was the bronze propeller. Was $2000 a ton few years ago, date of report $6000 a ton. One Propeller weights 20 tons.

no one is raising the old steel, exposing it to air, remelting and rerefining it. If you will read the article who's link I posted, you will see that the recovery of this material is a very sophisticated and complicated thing. Extraordinary isolation of the material is exercised during the recovery and the material is used as-is and not re-refined. I am not passing judgement on the morality or not, of the recovery, but no one is recovering this stuff to make soup cans with it.
BTW, this is not a new thing

Re: Are our T’s worth more for scrap?
They used to make steel with oxygen. I'd think you'd want to do that today if you need pure steel. I'd also think that most iron ore contains radon and other radioactive substances. Hell, everything else does. Anyway, it's good to know that even the shallow parts of the ocean are radiation-free, despite Bikini, et al, and all those WWII ships the US blasted with a huge A-bomb, and despite countless tons of atmospheric gases dissolved in it. There must be some other explanation for why some fish are so dog-gone ugly ... probably all that methane from diary cows! Thank Gaia and Gas-Ex, the 60 million or so buffalo that once roamed the Great Plains never passed gas, or we'd all have scales and forked tails....

Re: Are our T’s worth more for scrap?
Just did my part to save a Model T item from being scrapped. Bought a brass radiator shell top inset panel, inscribed " Ford Made in Canada", from a picker. He said it was worth $1 for scrap and was happy when I gave him $2. Investment in the future, he says he will go back and see if he can dig up any more parts at the same location. Who knows, maybe I'll end up with a whole 'nother T
I'll polish this piece up and hang it on the wall while I wait.

Re: Are our T’s worth more for scrap?
You bring back memories about going to farm auctions with my Father in the late 60’s, 70’s and early 80’s.
Here in Central Texas you would always find pieces and parts of T’s at country farm auctions. Frames turned into various forms of trailers, engine pans, locked up transmissions and etc. We bought what we’re able to haul home. One place had several frames with the wood wheels still on them and the pieces of bodies. I didn’t think much about it then because it was fairly common. Near the end the auctioneers would gather up what didn’t sell and ask for a bid. It usually was all the old car and T parts that were loaded on some guys trailers. Some auctioneers didn’t want to mess with the ‘scrap’ and give it to them just to haul it off. Not so much anymore and farm auctions are few and far between.

I consider my T "rolling scrap" as a matter of Grapes of Wrath
compliment. Just as Marines consider being called a "Maggot"
a term of endearment and making the grade, so is my old heap
of scrap, that gets me the job done and gets me where I need
to go.

Re: Are our T’s worth more for scrap?
The US Navy takes the position that any of it's ships that were sunk with loss of life are graveyards and are protected by law. I suppose that a foreign company that decided to salvage one in international waters would be hard to prosecute unless the scrap eventually found it's way to the USA. It would seem to me that recovering scrap steel or other metals from the ocean bottom would be a very expensive operation. Perhaps there are individual parts that might have some value, but there are lots of other things in this world that will get me cranked up before the marine salvage of scrap steel.

Re: Are our T’s worth more for scrap?
The irony here is the same people that want pre-atomic metal so it isn’t radioactive are using microwaves and 5G iPhones both of which bombard the user with dangerous cancer causing levels of radiation!
