I found 4 taps that appear to fit the Stevens front axle repair tool. 2 are Rollfast and 2 are Stevens. There are two that are 5/8-24 (one rollfast and 1 Stevens) but the other two are 5/8-24 L They are left hand threads. Other than being left hand threads they are identical to the taps that go with the Stevens front axle repair tool. All four taps are combination reamer/taps. My question is, what could the left-hand taps be used for.? Did chevy or some other cars have spindle bolts that were left hand threads.? If so, maybe Stevens made a set of left-hand threaded inserts to use on those cars.
Maybe Dan will see this and chime in ....

I don't know their intended use, but I don't think those were reamer/taps...they look like they were just piloted taps

Re: Question about Stevens and Rollfast taps for Stevens front axle repair tool
Scott, I have a new Stevens reamer/tap that Dan makes. I have compared the 4 taps in question to Dan's tap. 3 of them mic to within a couple thousand of his. One of them is about .010 smaller. It seems to be more heavily used. I still think they are for use with the Stevens front axle repair tool. I need to find a axle that needs the inserts installed and at least try out the right hand taps, to see how well they work. The left hand taps are still a mystery

Donnie, I agree those are for a Stevens axle jig. I considered bidding on those myself, but I didnt know what vehicle the left hand threads fit, and I dont have left hand threaded bushings. They look identical to the original reamer/tap in my Stevens set.

Re: Question about Stevens and Rollfast taps for Stevens front axle repair tool
Donnie: I have seen the LH taps. Got one with a Stevens tool I brought few years ago. It also had the right hand tap with it, I would assume they were for use with tool.
I have looked in my small pocket size Stevens catalog and a large supply catalog from 1927 and do not find it. Somewhere I have a master Stevens catalog, but I can not put my hands on it. Will keep looking.
Are the taps marked just Stevens or is Walden on there too? Dan

Re: Question about Stevens and Rollfast taps for Stevens front axle repair tool
Dan, Two of the taps are marked with only "Stevens" and the size , no Walden markings. The other two are marked "Rollfast" and the size. I have 4 different Stevens catalogs and a Stevens/Walden catalog and I have not found any reference to these left-hand taps.
Humblej, I bid on the taps just for the two right-hand taps and the left-hand taps were just a bonus. The auction was poorly listed and I thought they sold for much less than the value of one of the right-hand taps.
