What about balloons on the steering wheel and the firewall? you could even put them along the side for side collisions, and in the closed cars you could put them on the inside of the top for roll over crashes?

Velcro switch on the seat activates the inflator upon quick disconnect. Possible liability issue when catapulting into a group of pedestrians
