Re: Building a light weight speedster trailer
lots of ideas on YouTube etc https://www.google.com/search?q=boat+tr ... cLWuGTyZAM
This looked simple and retained most of the trailer 's structure.

There is no boat trailer frame to conserve, the trailer is scrapped to get the aluminum i beams

Find an older pull behind camp trailer with an Atwood surge brake.., they work excellent! Been using one for 30 plus years.

Re: Building a light weight speedster trailer
As an update I found an old aluminum boat trailer for $50 with a title no less! So some progress has been made.

Re: Building a light weight speedster trailer
We had two horse trailers with the Atwood surge brakes. I agree - they worked extremely well. The systems that we had used a 1960s vintage Ford single chamber master cylinder.Henry K. Re: Building a light weight speedster trailer
Since you'll only have 1 axle & two wheels, don't try for weight reduction and minimal design there! I have a lightweight trailer, like the one you pictured above, but the axle is from a trailer home and it uses 15", 12 ply rated, 120 psi, heavy equipment hauling tires. I've worn them out, but I've never had "tire trouble", (fingers crossed...).

Re: Building a light weight speedster trailer
Back in ‘74 when I bought my 27 roadster I had a week to solve the trailer issue. I created a solid axle using some surplus front spindles and used a pair of junk model A frame rails. I had access to some 10” channels from 12 gauge steel and made a pair of tracks. NO springs. I used it for about 20 years with no problems. Eventually sold it (which I now regret)! It bounced a bit empty, but was fine loaded (which it usually was).
Just some thoughts.

Re: Building a light weight speedster trailer
I lucked out and picked this one up from a club member. Has a torsion axle, is low & towes like a dream wich is much better than my 18' two axle dove tail. and its over a 1,000# lighter.
