Hyatt Sleeves

Is there a way to determine whether hyatt sleeves from the rear axle are reusable? What we've got look pretty good to the eye but is that enough?

You might try measuring their thickness using a micrometer or caliper. It's tricky to do, since they usually aren't worn right at the edge so you can get a false reading. If some are thinner on one side, I'd look for better ones. The ones for the inner bearings probably are fine. The inner bearings and sleeves wear very little.

Originals should be 0.070" - 0.072" in thickness. Use a tubing micrometer or a micrometer with a ball attachment to get an accurate reading, measuring in more than one spot and at both ends. In the past some of the reproductions had been made thinner than original. The last ones that I had gotten from Langs (in 2019) were spot on at 0.072" thick.

If they are not pitted where the harden surface is sluffing off or worn at the end from bearing out of alignment, chances are they would be ok to use.
I know the voices aren't real but damn they have some good ideas! :shock:

while the bearings are out, place them in a strong solvent and ultrasonic the daylights out of them, changing the solution periodically. The rollers will be packed with "glitter" from previous sleeves. The corruption that will come out will amaze you.

Note: you do NOT want to ultrasonic any kind of modern caged bearing as they will very likely be damaged or ruined in the process. Hyatts are different in that the rollers do not touch anything with their bearing surface and thus cannot be damaged by metal-on-metal scrubbing.
