Stewart Model 100 odometer
I'm working on this speedometer for my 1915. I have a couple of questions about the odometer and the entire unit.
A worm gear (1) turns the big drive gear (2). The trip odometer control (4) is pulled out, engaging the trip odometer main gear (3). In this mode the control is disengaged and does nothing, while the trip odometer is in gear and operates along with the main odometer which shows total miles. When 5384 turns to 5385, 50 will turn to 51.
Here the trip odometer control (4) is pushed in disengaging the trip odometer main gear (3). In this mode the trip odometer does not operate. By pushing in and turning the control, you can run through the remaining 52.2 miles back to 0. There is no instant reset to 0; you have to run through the numbers.
1 Do I have all that right?
2 Should the main shaft driving the whole works (speedometer and odometer together) turn easily by thumb and finger, with no resistance?

Is or will this be a problem? JBweld fix?
The past is a great place and I don't want to erase it or to regret it, but I don't want to be its prisoner either.

Re: Stewart Model 100 odometer
Steve, I'm no Russ F. but I put together two Stewarts for my 14. Yet to install but they work on a drill attachment. My trip meter does the same thing as yours when resetting it, and yes all of the geared parts turn easily with little resistance when the main shaft is engaged. So I think you are on the right track. I went through a lot of speedos to find the other main frame section with the worm gears that weren't broken. The pot metal parts are pretty delicate. Pics of the speedos and the parts from one of them.

I think Dude Lester's observation applies here: "It don't hurt the runnin' of it none."
The gears and dials all seem to function correctly. I don't think there's enough missing to let the control shaft wander.

Re: Stewart Model 100 odometer
Steve, I don't have any messages from you. Your odometer look fine. If you use this odometer, the part that is broken off will affect the way the dial face sits on the speedometer frame. The little tit on the odometer goes into the hole on the dial face to keep the dial face in place. The rest of the odometer looks fine. Russ Furstnow
