Model T Speedometers

Post by jiminbartow » Tue Aug 30, 2022 9:32 pm

Is there a chart, or poster, complete with pictures, part numbers and descriptions listing the various Stewart speedometers and what year Model T’s they were designed for. That would be very helpful. If you have something like this, can you take a picture of it and post it on the forum. Something like this would be very helpful to those contemplating the correct speedometer for their Model T. Below, I installed the correct Stewart 490 on my 1926 Coupe. It is smaller than the more impressive 160 I sold, but the 490 was made for the 1926-‘27 improved style dash and fit nicely in the cramped dash without any kind of special adapter. Jim Patrick

It's too big a subject to fit on a chart.

Jim, were you lucky enough to find and buy a restored Stewart 490 complete with all the drive, or is someone repopping the drive, again. For years, Lang's cataloged it. Then when I went to order, they said they weren't able to get anymore from their supplier. the drive unit holding the small driven gear looks to be made of brass and the originals were pot metal if I'm correct.

Terry. I purchased a 160 from Russ Furstow about 25 years ago. I wanted to use the 160 in my 1926 coupe because it looked cooler, was bigger, had a trip reset knob and color coded numbers that reminded you that the time had come to perform certain maintenance functions, but when I did the measurements in order to install the 160, I found it was too big to fit between the dash and the cowl fuel tank. Russ informed me the 160 was not proper for the 1926-‘27, but was for the pre-1926 as they did not have the cowl tank and had plenty of room behind the dash. I purchased a complete Stewart 490 at Russ’s suggestion. Jim Patrick

PS. The below pictures show the Stewart 160 and the color coded numbers that correspond with the original speedometer maintenance booklet that came with the speedometer.

Here is the Stewart 160 and maintenance booklet.
