Master Coil Benefits

Post by J1MGOLDEN » Sat Dec 10, 2022 8:03 pm

Has anyone used or is still using one of these Master Coils?

Are there any real benefits from using one?

Unaware of someone today using a master vibrator unit. Lots of pre-13 use likely benefited some T owners, as early coils were hard to hold adjustments.

Good info here on this post.

On my ‘12 project have mounted one with the wires to the coil box cutaway. Just for fun discussion when someone asks, what is that?

I reply, “a Master coil used with the early wooden dash box with 4 individual spark coils, these early ones didn’t work together well, so owner used that single Master coil. Someone removed the wooden coil box, and installed a later metal coil box that used 4 better coils that improved over that Master coil, so that Master coil was just left in place with the wires cut.” ;)

The one coil fires all 4 cylinders. All 4 plugswill fire at the same time over each hole. Doing the same accurate firing a set af ECCT tuned coils do. Accurate timing. Back in the day the early coils were marginal to boot. Even the late 13 style coils we all run to 27 would not be in tune, even with the RARE dealer tuning with a HCCT.

Its true, early Heinze coils worked poorly but not because of an inferior design but rather the limitations of the tools used to tune coils back in the day.
Heinze coils are actually very easy to tune for equal firing time simply by turning the vibrator spring tension knob and often outperform later KW coils. The key to proper Heinze coil tuning is the ability to accurately measure the coil dwell time to fire spark. The Hand Cranked Coil Tester (HCCT) method of using average coil current as an indirect approximation of coil dwell time to fire spark lacks sufficient accuracy and introduces other variables. The result is an improperly tuned Heinze coil that performs poorly. History on the Heinze coil is being re-written by folks using the dwell time to fire method to tune their Heinze coils today. The performance is impressive, especially high engine speeds were ignition timing is most critical.

James,
I started the post that Dan told about in 2014.
The 1922 woody was driven with the Master Coil since then for about 15,000 miles without any problems. About every time the car is started it was given a free start even cold and set for a long time. Cold I just turn the engine a few times over with the choke pulled out and the ignition switch off. as soon as the switch is set on battery I have a start. Starting on Magneto is easy also. I don't know if the free start had something to do with the Master Coil but ... .
Since that time I rebuilded a few of different kinds. The best results I have with the K&W MC's.
