Sign painter

Finally found an old school sign guy who uses a brush. Vinyl lettering on a 1920’s car just doesn’t work to give the right appearance. I’m happy with what he did.

Very nice work. We have an older sign painter doing similar work out here. Lost art? Don't see many out there these days. Lots of pin stripers though.

Fabulous work Tom ! Are all the graphics hand painted also ? I did vinyl numbers 30 years ago on my Racer & my buddy had his hand painted on.

Very nice. Good work. I bet his hand shook like a leaf until the brush touched the surface, and it only cost you a bottle of cheap wine ! Those sign painters are all derelict drunks.

RajoRacer, is that perchance a T6 in the background? Been quite a while, but I used to fly with a guy who had a T6 with those markings back when I lived in Washington. That was 40 years ago or so.....

When I built my Heights chocolate van I had to find an artist who could sign write. Eventually a fellow high alcohol student from my school days took the job on.

He was 3 weeks into the illustrations of the original packaging design. Using enamels, he had to allow each colour to dry before he could apply the next. In contrast, the lettering took just 3 days. He really didn't' like the font, but conceded that it suited the era.

Yes Gregory - it was - that was taken at Cawley Field near South Prairie. Unfortunately, it was in an accident and I lost a couple good friends a number of years ago.

Sorry to hear about the accident. I wonder if this was the plane previously owned by Howard Jurgensen. He owned it roughly 1977-? He lived on a grass airstrip near Rochester. We used to fly all over Washington state.

This is the art that I supplied, that I wanted copied. You can see there were some minor changes, but pretty much we stuck to original designs. I decided locations and size guide lines to go by, but the ultimate decision was the artists to ensure balance. I made color choices, as you can see his notations on color and size and locations. But there again, I left the final choice to him, as I wouldn’t be there. I think that because I have spray painted most of my life and have a good sense of color, we were able to speak a “universal paint code”. You never know how things will turn out, especially when you are working with someone for the first time on a job that is filled with their interpretation of your ideas. So, how did he do? Everyday when I walk into the garage and look at this car I ask myself “How did I get so lucky to find this guy?”.

Tom, that's not luck. That's what you get when kindred spirits work on a project. Brilliant stuff. Perhaps the luck was in first finding the right painter.
