Installation of Engine Splash Pans
I am getting ready to install the splash pans on my coupe. I assume the ears that attach to the engine go under a nut and not between the oil pan and the block.

Re: Installation of Engine Splash Pans
They mount under the bolt heads under the crank case & under the frame @ the hood shelf bolts.
Let us know how fun or grief making you find the job. & how you did it.
Been a long time since I had to install them. I remember it a nasty job.

Re: Installation of Engine Splash Pans
The side pans are great for holding tools when wrenching on them, on a hot summer day there is more heat inside the car with them on it, I very seldom see a driving, touring car with them on unless they run winter time with them.

Re: Installation of Engine Splash Pans
I get very little engine heat in my '27 roadster, even in 100F + driving. It has the pans in place. It has an accessory metal shroud on the toeboard that helps keep heat and noise from coming in around the pedals. I added a rubber floormat last Fall that almost eliminates engine heat getting in the car. I've been driving the car with the top up and side curtains off. On hot days, I open the lower half of the windshield part way and have a nice breeze. The car is as comfortable as any un-airconditioned vehicle in very hot weather, 100F to 110F, as long as you keep moving. It's like riding a motorcycle, except you have shade from the sun.

We recently had a thread on this with 85 posts, whereby splash shields were thoroughly discussed, ad Infininitum. I really don’t think we need another thread on this just one week later. Time to move on. Jim Patrick

Re: Installation of Engine Splash Pans
One reason for lengthy, run-on topics is our collective tendency to avoid reading all the posts from the beginning, but add on to the most recent ones.
Jim, I agree it seems excessive, but where's the fun in censoring or mandating topics ? When members find a topic of endless fascination, it's like the good ol' boys sitting around the cracker barrel in the general store. We've heard it all before, but often there's a twist or the topic drifts and you learn something new. As ever, no one demands we must read conversations that don't interest us.
Now let me tell you how Marvel Mystery Oil made installing the splash pans a real breeze ! (that improved cooling and the aerodynamics of my T !)

Re: Installation of Engine Splash Pans
In summer time hot north FL the engine pans don't seem to increase floor board heat IMO. Maybe even help flow air under them.
All my T's have engine pans, Henry put them there, I keep them there

Really helpful too for splash, I like to run all kinds of roads, sand, mud, and the occasional deep puddle too. Engine pans keep water off the side of the crankcase, or into the pan snout, and perhaps out of the carb, although I run heat pipes too, so the water would have to be rather deep to soak the NH.

The best way is always the simplest. The attics of the world are cluttered up with complicated failures. Henry Ford

Re: Installation of Engine Splash Pans
I don’t want to mandate or censor topics. If there is more to say about it, by all means, keep it going, but go to the first thread on this subject and I think you will find all you need to know about it from how to install them as well as the pros and cons of having them and the scientific theories on why they are necessary. When there are two and three lengthy threads on exactly the same subject, it makes it difficult to find the information we are searching for far into the future. Also, the many threads dilute the information that was provided in the first 85 post thread that, to me, is the benchmark thread on splash pans and covered everything that needed to be said on the subject. If more needs to be said, consider going to the first thread and post your comments on that one. Sorry if I offended anyone. Jim Patrick

I couldn't agree more, Jim. It's kind of a problem, a hazard of our "bull session" format. I wish there were a solution, but I sure don't have any suggestions. No offense taken, your posts are always relevant and gentlemanly. I hope not to raise any hackles either ! Pax !jiminbartow wrote: ↑Sun Mar 05, 2023 11:57 am. . . Re: Installation of Engine Splash Pans
This thing with the splash pans is a result of no one understanding their true purpose.
Also it is a result of experts weighing in, giving their opinion as to why splash pans are a nuisance, or worse, a part that is not necessary...
Just a note, I have yet to re-find an article that covers testing splash pans and wings (fenders) dated about the time of the introduction of the Model T (1908). Again British Press referring to test being don on the practicality of shrapnel guards.
The shrapnel guard was named after a patent given to Harold J. Shrapnel , Brixton , England . Filed December 4 . 1908.

Re: Installation of Engine Splash Pans
Let's re-name them "Brixton Pans", and start over.
If you find the first answer or two or three in a discussion satisfactory, no matter how lengthy the dicussion ultimately becomes, that's a good time to move on. A simple click will do it.

Re: Installation of Engine Splash Pans
No one needs to know an engine pan's "true purpose" to install it. Common sense and maybe a picture in the FORD Service Manual is all most folks need.

When I first restored my touring, I didn't have any. Wasn’t too long after, I had them.

Will, are you intimating that you found their "true purpose"?

Re: Installation of Engine Splash Pans
The true purpose, of course, is to prevent roadchucks from being flung into the engine compartment along with mud, horse shoe nails, and other road debris commonly encountered in rural areas. Roadchucks will do great mischief if one is able to get under the hood.

Re: Installation of Engine Splash Pans
I'm delighted to learn of another use for Marvel Mystery Oil, the installation of engine splash pans.
