Gas tank

Hi everyone,
I am wondering if the gas tank mounting bands on my ‘24 touring are supposed to have webbing between them and the tank. Thank you anyone who responds!

Yes...I just use tan gasket material. The tightening of the nut on the carriage bolt keeps it in place.

The drawing posted says optional. Was this cork band something that was installed at the factory? I removed the tank from a car that I am fairly sure was never dismantled, and saw no signs of this. I imagine that if they had rotted away, then the tank would have been loose in the bands?

That is interesting! On our Canadian sourced cars, in 60 years of playing with T's, i have never seen evidence of any packing between the tank and brackets. {except on the 1925 models built by Duncan and Fraser for Ford. These had a custom made square tank an some cushioning was used on the corners}

Is someone claiming oval tanked T's ORIGINALLY had some material under the straps?
Vowellart indicates "optional"
I am aware of strap material on "cowl tank" T's (26-7)

For the round and oval gas tanks, if Ford had used a lining material, and they didn’t, that material would have been riveted to the tank straps. I have never seen any evidence of rivets or riveting holes in any gas tank straps.

When I removed the tank on my 24 Coupe years ago to clean it. I removed the straps and don’t recall any padding or material around the straps. It had the band gap bridge on one strap but nothing else. Pretty sure it never been out of the car as it was awfully difficult to get the mounting bolts off. I do remember having to twist off one of the bolts.

I haven't seen it on oval tanks I have worked on. About 5 years ago a new one cost just a bit more than having one cleaned by a radiator shop. Haven't checked on whether they are still be manufactured.

New tanks were unavailable for a few years, but now they're back in production.

I cut up and inner tube and put it under the brass straps that hold down the tank on my speedster. The tank is painted and I wanted to protect it from the straps. It is not noticable unless you look closely.

This is just 1 of those things that if you ever had to solder up a hole in a tank because of a strap rubbing a hole in it, then you tend to want to protect the tank from being rubbed. Truth is the bolts probably weren't tight that caused the rub . But for no more than it cost on a driver T, some cork or rubber is not going to harm anything and it is removable if need be for later restoration to factory spec. mine have some rubber from a inner tube in there..

You better find some longer bolts, they’re hard to get the nut on without a gasket.

Interesting, my ‘24 TT has the material under gas tank straps. They weren’t riveted but just clamped down by the strap.
