How Can You Tell If Oil has Graphite in it?

Post by Bill Everett » Thu May 09, 2019 2:22 pm

A common them in oil posts is to not use oil with graphite in it.

How can you tell if the oil you're thinking of using DOES have graphite in it?

It would be black as the ace of spades, and stain your hands. ARCO graphite oil is the only one I can recall in my life and that's gone from the market as far as I know. You'd have to specifically add it via an oil additive, which IS available...so the easy choice is: don't

Fairly safe your motor oil choices wouldn't have graphite.

But beware of greases, esp. if you use graphite containing greases in the u-joint. Could get mixed with the engine oil, maybe such small qty. that wouldn't hurt the magneto, but why chance? :?

Any recent API certified oil will not have graphite in it.
