I spent the morning building the tooling to burnish size triple gear bushings.
Plus re-sizing worn original Ford bushings.
Drawing for sizing tool(s)
The first tool Sized too small. There was more spring back in the bushing. About .002
Required a second tool +.002 to get to .682 finished. Thats good for .678" pins.
I may polish a bit more to maintain a consistent .004" clearance.
.005 is still acceptable in my book for a .677 pin.
Burnishing tools #1 .682 produced .680 size. (only .002) clearance.
#2 tool larger to allow for the spring back. The grey color is from black graphite spray lube.
# 2 is more polished from sanding & polishing to get the size down for .004" clearance.
Tool #3 Recognize?? Made to squish the bushing once back in the gear to decrease the ID back smaller to take the new sizing.
Finished.
This is a resized original bushing.
Note under the bushing flange is a .010" thich shim washer To get the thickness back up to recut the .010 height.
Note the counter sunk edge to get the oil to the 2 oil groves. The 2 grove openings were also kissed with an 1/8" die grinder bit.
A concern I had was the resulting centering of the bushing to the gear outside radius & pitch radius.
I found that the gear has a measurable off center hole of .001". Thats before & after the procedures performed.
Very acceptable, better than I thought it would be.
So I now have the tooling to do the best possible rebuild on the tripple gear bushings.
P.S. I have the great minds on this forum to thank for all this.

John, I'm really pleased that you shared this and am doubly pleased that it worked out for you
this is one of those "what have you got to lose?" sort of things and given that it is from FORD documentation, you're not going to go far wrong

Re: BURNISH SIZING TRIPPLE BUSHINGS
Packard insisted on burnishing rather than reaming on several key bushings, including king pins, water pump bushings, and wrist pin bushings.

Try it with burnishing balls. If you try it you will like it.
