Help drive shaft bushing clearance
I am replacing the drive shaft bushing and u joint in my 26 Roadster. I would like your opinion on how to measure the .002 to .003 clearance needed between the u joint and the drive shaft bushing. With everything in the drive shaft tube I don’t see an easy, or hard, way to make an accurate measurement. I was considering putting a piece of solder in between the two components and assembling them them take them apart again and measure how much the solder is compressed. Any ideas on how to get the correct measurement ? or how did you do this procedure in the past ?

Re: Help drive shaft bushing clearance
Unless you're set up with a dial indicator w/magnetic base, it's best practice to face a small amount off the bushing at a time and test fit for the u.j. pin to slightly tap into the u-joint & shaft - when you can tap it in VERY slightly and feel a smidgen of drag, you're good.

Thanks Steve. I do have that dial indicator but didn’t think of using it. Parkinson’s is screwing with me again. Thanks very much. Just waiting for the ups truck with the parts.

You are most welcome - I set my indicator up on the pinion end then pry the pinion back & forth.

I just go to the point where I can install the pin, it will seat itself soon enough. Do not forget to grease everything. BTDT

I know the voices aren't real but damn they have some good ideas!
